Abdul Buhari (born 26 June 1982) is a British athlete who competes in the discus throw. He was born in Nigeria. [1]

Education

Buhari was educated at two state schools in London: at Millbank Primary School, a state primary school in the London Borough of the City of Westminster, and the London Nautical School , a selective boys' state secondary school in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Athletics career

Buhari is a member of the Newham and Essex Beagles club and is coached by Mark Wiseman. [1] He works two days a week in the City of London, in operations support for investment bank Credit Suisse and spends the rest of the week training in Loughborough. [2]

Buhari missed the 2010 Commonwealth Games due to injury. [3] In 2011 he set a new personal best distance of 65.44 metres (214.7 ft). He won the UK Trials and Championships with a throw of 63.32 metres (207.7 ft), qualifying for the 2011 World Championships, held in Daegu, South Korea in the process. [4] At the Championships he had a best throw of 60.21 metres (197.5 ft) in the qualifying round, finishing 30th out of the competing athletes and failing to advance to the final. [5]

Buhari represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland, but failed to reach the discus final. [6] At the 2012 GB Olympic Athletics Trials on 24 June in Birmingham, Buhari finished third with a best throw of 60.93 metres (199.9 ft); Lawrence Okoye won the event with a throw of 63.43 metres (208.1 ft), securing automatic selection for the 2012 Olympics, and Brett Morse finished second with a best of 62.27 metres (204.3 ft). [7] In July 2012 he achieved the Olympic 'A' qualifying standard with a throw of 65.24 metres (214.0 ft) at a meeting in Barnet, London. [8]

Buhari was selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's discus alongside compatriots Lawrence Okoye and Brett Morse. [9] The event was held at the Olympic Stadium on 6–7 August and Buhari finished in 29th, missing out on the final. [10] [11]

On 20 May 2007, Sayers set a new British record in the javelin at 65.05 m, thus becoming the first British woman to throw over 65 metres since javelins were redesigned in 1999. Sayers set the record when competing for her university, Loughborough, at the Loughborough International match. She cemented this achievement at the Norwich Union Glasgow Grand Prix on 3 June 2007 where she beat a top-class international field in rainy conditions with a throw of 63.59 m. Stephen James Miller MBE is a British athlete who competes in the fields of Paralympic club and discus throwing. He has won three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in the F32/51 club throw at the Paralympics. In Paralympic F32/51 discus he won one bronze medal.

The men's discus throw competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was held at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange on 12–13 August. Thirty-five athletes from 24 nations competed. Germany's Christoph Harting succeeded his brother Robert Harting to the Olympic title. "It was the first time in Olympic history, in any sport, that brothers succeeded each other as Olympic champions in the same individual event." It was also the nation's third victory in the event. Poland's Piotr Małachowski took the silver medal ahead of another German, Daniel Jasinski. Małachowski had also won silver eight years before, making him the 16th man to win multiple medals in the discus throw.

Shelbi JoDae Vaughan is an American track and field athlete whose specialty is the discus throw.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 British Athletics Championships</span> British Athletics Championships in 2021

The 2021 British Athletics Championships was the national championships in outdoor track and field for athletes in the United Kingdom, which also served as the main qualifying event for athletics competitors for the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics. In addition, the Championships included a number of parasports events, with a total of 36 competitors in these competitions. On 29 June 2021, UK Athletics announced 65 athletes that would compete for Team GB at the Olympics, taking the total number of British athletics competitors at the Games to 72. In July 2021, four more athletes qualified for the Games based on their World Athletics rankings.
