Brian Adams (born 13 March 1949) is a male retired British racewalker from Leicester who worked as a coach in Sheffield. [1]

Walking career

He won his first RWA Young Athletes Road Walk Championship in the Junior Men's category in 1969. Some of his career achievements include winning the RWA 50 Kilometres Road Walk Race in 1977 in Milton Keynes and winning the RWA Men's Long Distance Road Walk Championship in 1983, in which he completed 100 kilometres in 10:13:16. While he is best known for 20 kilometres, achieving his personal best of 1:27:46 in 1975, [3] he won the 1984 Leicester RWA 100 miles in 17:39:28, beating long-distance specialists such as John Cannell from the Isle of Man. [4]

He came second in the RWA Men's 10 Miles Road Walk Championships in the years 1975 in Southwick, 1976 in York, 1978 in London and 1979 in York. [5]

He also won the AAA Championships 10000 metres Walk five years in a row from 1975. [6]

Adams competed in the men's 20 kilometres walk at the 1976 Summer Olympics, coming in 11th place with a time of 1:30:46. [7] At these Olympics, he shared a room with Paul Nihill, who gave him the nickname "Bernie". [8] He represented England in the 30 kilometres walk event at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he placed 4th with a time of 2:29:42. [9] [10]

Life after walking

After retiring from competing, Adams became a coach at City of Sheffield AC [11] with a career lasting over 25 years, winning Yorkshire and Humberside Coach of the Year award in 2017. [12] Adams now lives in Sheffield, where he is a trustee of a local Methodist Church [13] and of the South Yorkshire Schools' Athletic Association, [14] where he also serves as the Race Walking Secretary. Personal life

In 1973, he married Joy Hollins and the couple have two sons together, Nathan and Simeon, and five grandchildren. He trained his son Nathan [16] who went on to win the RWA Young Athletes Road Walk Championships in 1999 and the RWA's Men's 35 Kilometres Road Walk Championships in 2004. [17] Adams is a Christian and is well known for his faith, signing with the phrase "Walk with Jesus" throughout his career. [18]

Giovanni De Benedictis is a retired Italian race walker, that won 9 medals at individual level, 7 of these at senior level, at the International athletics competitions. He participated at five editions of the Summer Olympics, this like only two others Italian athletes in track and field: the other racewalker champion Abdon Pamich and the sprinter Pietro Mennea. He also won four medals at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup team events.

The World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships is a racewalking event organised by World Athletics. It has been held since 1961, and generally on a biennial basis. The first women's edition of the event happened in 1979. It was formerly known as the Lugano Cup after the city that hosted the first event, then became the IAAF World Race Walking Cup until 2016 and then IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships until 2018. In 2004, a junior division was added for athletes between 16 and 20. Since 2008 it has been a constituent meeting of the World Athletics Challenge – Race Walking.

The World Athletics Race Walking Tour is a racewalking series organised by World Athletics. Athletes accumulate points in specific race walk meetings during the season. Performances in 10 kilometres race walk, 20 kilometres race walk and 50 kilometres race walk count towards athlete's final scores. Since 2011, racewalking performances at the World Athletics Championships and Olympic Games count towards the series. Women have competed in the 50 km distance since 2018.

The Race Walking Association (RWA) is the major competition provider for the event of race walking in England, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands answerable to England Athletics. It was founded in 1907 as the Road Walking Association, and permitted to organise National Road Walking Championships. Some emphasis is placed on the development of future athletes, and the promotion of walking as a discipline within England. It is a notionally democratic body, controlled by the elected Officers and supported by the elected General Committee. Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club is an athletics club based in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. The club are based at the Aldershot Military Stadium in Aldershot, Hampshire. AFD competes in the Youth Development League (YDL), Hampshire and Surrey Leagues, various relay events including the Southern Road Relays and National Road and Cross Country Relays. Rhydian Cowley is an Australian race walker born in Glen Waverley, Victoria who specialises in the 50 kilometres race walk and 20 kilometres race walk. Cowley competed in the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. For both of his major championship competitions, Cowley qualified in the 20 kilometres race walk. He has also competed at a Summer Universiade, five World Race Walking Cups, and a World Junior Championships. In 2021, he competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo where he finished in 8th in the men's 50 kilometres walk with a new personal best time of 3:52.01 just 113 seconds behind the eventual winner Dawid Tomala of Poland.

Eric William Hall was a British racewalker. He competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 1960 Summer Olympics, and was a member of the Belgrave Harriers.

Robert William Dobson, is a male former athlete who competed for England.

Koki Ikeda is a Japanese racewalking athlete. He is a graduate of Toyo University.
