Bromma (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈbrɔ̂mːa] ) [1] is a borough (stadsdelsområde) in the western part of Stockholm, Sweden, forming part of the Stockholm Municipality. Bromma is primarily made up of Bromma Parish and Västerled Parish. The fourth largest airport in Sweden and the third largest of the airports close to Stockholm, the Stockholm Bromma Airport, was first built in Bromma in 1936. [2] [3] The south-eastern part of Bromma is one of the richest areas in Stockholm.

The districts that make up the borough are Abrahamsberg, Alvik, Beckomberga, Blackeberg, Bromma kyrka, Bällsta, Eneby, Höglandet, Mariehäll, Nockeby, Nockebyhov, Norra Ängby, Olovslund, Riksby, Smedslätten, Stora Mossen, Södra Ängby, Traneberg, Ulvsunda, Ulvsunda Industriområde, Åkeshov, Åkeslund, Ålsten and Äppelviken. As of 2004, the population is 59,229 in an area of 24.60 km2, which gives a density of 2,407.68/km2.

Bromma is dotted with tiny forests, parks and lakes, including Judarskogen nature reserve, surrounding Lake Judarn, and the parks around Åkeshov Castle and Ulvsunda Castle. Bromma Church is one of the most distinguished Romanesque churches in the region, celebrated for a complete scheme of wallpaintings by the late medieval artist Albertus Pictor (c. 1440 - c. 1507). Bromma consists predominantly of high-and medium-income residential neighbourhoods, and the Ulvsunda industrial area. This is situated close to Stockholm-Bromma Airport, the only airport in the city of Stockholm. It was opened in 1936 and serves primarily domestic destinations; with about 1.25 million passengers a year, it is the 2nd largest airport in Stockholm County. Ängby Camping is one of the largest camping lots in Stockholm and is situated close to a large beach by Lake Mälaren.

Famous residents

Bromma is the birthplace of Mats Sundin and Douglas Murray. Per Albin Hansson, Prime Minister of Sweden from 1932 to 1946, lived in Ålsten during the last years of his life, and died on the tram in Ålsten in 1946 (while still the Prime Minister). Martin Eriksson, better known as E-Type, moved to Bromma with his family at the age of 14. Sweden's first man in space, Christer Fuglesang, was raised in Bromma. Nobel Prize laureates Gunnar and Alva Myrdal lived at several locations in Bromma along with their children, including writer Jan Myrdal.

Sport

The local football team Brommapojkarna have played in the Allsvenskan. Although not regarded as a major team in Stockholm, it has the largest youth academy in the world. [6] [7] Its main emphasis on producing technical and fast players. The local icehockey team is GötaTraneberg. Sweden´s most famous basketball team, Alviks BK - founded 1956 - has won the Swedish Championship 19 times since 1963.

Economy

When it operated, the charter airline Scanair had its head office in Bromma. [8]

Tvärbanan is a light-rail line in Stockholm, Sweden. Its name translates literally to The transverse line, as it operates crosswise to the otherwise radial metro and commuter rail lines of Stockholm. It links together several transit lines through its connections with the southern, western and northern subway branches of the Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbana) as well as three branches of the Stockholm commuter rail (Pendeltåg). The possibility to travel between southern, western and northern greater Stockholm without having to enter the city centre significantly reduces the number of transit passengers, also reducing the number of trains having to pass through the Old Town bottleneck during peak hours. Near Liljeholmen the track is shared with freight traffic for a short section, this being the only place in Sweden where freight traffic and trams share the same track.

Nockebybanan is a tram line between Nockeby and Alvik in the western suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden. The 5.6 kilometers (3.5 mi) long line is part of the Storstockholms Lokaltrafik public transport network, and connects with the Stockholm metro and Tvärbanan tram at Alvik metro station. The Nockebybanan, also known as line 12, is operated by Arriva.

Islandstorget is a station in the Stockholm metro on the Green line. It is located in the district of Södra Ängby, which is part of the borough of Bromma in the west of the city of Stockholm. The station is above ground with a single island platform. The entrance is from Blackebergsvägen, which passes over the line. On a workday there are some 3,450 passengers who travel from Islandstorget.

Three other lakes are found nearby: Kyrksjön, Lillsjön, and Råcksta Träsk. The name is etymologically associated to ljuda, the verb "to sound".

The southeastern part of Lillsjön is part of Ulvsunda and straight through the district stretches Ulvsundavägen.

Judarskogen nature reserve is a municipal nature reserve and a Natura 2000 area in Bromma, western Stockholm, Sweden. It is located in Bromma parish in Stockholm municipality in Uppland. The area of Judarskogen was set in the early 20th century as a nature park. Judarskogen became an outdoor reserve in 1932 and since 1995 it has been a nature reserve. The reserve is named after the lake Judarn, which is located in the middle of the area.
