Bryan Pearson (30 May 1934 –12 October 2016),nicknamed Sedluk or Salluk,meaning skinny in Inuktitut, [1] was a territorial level politician from the Northwest Territories,in what is now Nunavut,Canada.
Pearson was born in Liverpool,England 30 May 1934. He had two siblings,a brother - Robert and a sister - Val Pearson,who grew up in the Wirral Merseyside.
Pearson joined the Merchant Navy when he was about 15. [2] After working on ships in Britain and Australia he came to Canada in 1956 and went to Baffin Island. [1] He was hired to work at the Distant Early Warning Line site on Padloping Island in the kitchen. In 1957 he moved to Apex,an Inuit community about 5 km (3.1 mi) outside of Iqaluit,to work at the Frobisher Bay Air Base. [1] [3]
Beginning in the 1960s he began several businesses including the original taxi service,Astro Theatre (in 1994,the first,and as of 2016 the only cinema in Nunavut),Arctic Ventures (which he later sold to Kenn Harper). He also worked as the communities undertaker for many years and had a hearse shipped in. [1] [3]
In 1964,a fire in Apex motivated Pearson and others to organise the first settlement council for the community and was elected as the chairperson. [1] Pearson was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1970 Northwest Territories general election. He won the electoral district of Eastern Arctic and held that district until it was abolished in the 1975 redistribution. Pearson ran for re-election and won the new Baffin South electoral district in the 1975 Northwest Territories general election. He did not return after the legislature was dissolved in 1979.
In 1979,Pearson was elected as the first mayor of Iqaluit and served several terms until 1985. [1]
Pearson attempted a political comeback in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election running in the Iqaluit electoral district. He was defeated in a three-way race by Dennis Patterson.
While on holiday in Australia he was diagnosed with pancreatic [4] or liver cancer,which was confirmed on his return to Canada. [1] He died at his home in Iqaluit on 12 October 2016. [1] The town mourned his lost,Queen Elizabeth sent a letter of condolences and the Canadian territories hung the flag at half mast in Pearson's honour. A plaque remembering Pearson is to be opened in Liverpool Cathedral,one of Bryan's favourite places.
Iqaluit is the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It is the territory's largest community and its only city,and the northernmost city in Canada. It was known as Frobisher Bay from 1942 to 1987,after the large bay on the coast on which the city is situated. Its traditional Inuktitut name was restored in 1987.
Pond Inlet is a small,predominantly Inuit community in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut,Canada,located on northern Baffin Island. To the Inuit the name of the place "is and always has been Mittimatalik." The Scottish explorer Sir John Ross had named an arm of the sea that separates Bylot Island from Baffin Island as Pond's Bay,and the hamlet now shares that name. On 29 August 1921,the Hudson's Bay Company opened its trading post near the Inuit camp and named it Pond Inlet,marking the expansion of its trading empire into the High Arctic.
Paul Okalik is a Canadian politician. He is the first Inuk to have been called to the Nunavut Bar. He was also the first premier of Nunavut.
Kitikmeot Region is an administrative region of Nunavut,Canada. It consists of the southern and eastern parts of Victoria Island with the adjacent part of the mainland as far as the Boothia Peninsula,together with King William Island and the southern portion of Prince of Wales Island. He ran as the New Democratic Party's candidate for his old riding,now renamed Nunavut,in the 2015 election,but was defeated by Liberal candidate Hunter Tootoo.
Edward "Ed" Walter Picco is a Canadian politician first elected in the 1995 Northwest Territories election. He was re-elected in the 1999 Nunavut election and in the 2004 Nunavut election. Picco is one of the few Canadian politicians elected to two different legislative assemblies,having been elected in 1995 to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and in 1999 to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.

Lena Pedersen or Lena Pederson is a politician and social worker from Nunavut,Canada. In 1959,she moved from Greenland to the Northwest Territories and lived in Coppermine (Kugluktuk),Pangnirtung and Rae (Behchoko) before moving to Cape Dorset where she participated in the artwork sales of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative.

Apex is a small community in Iqaluit located on Baffin Island in Nunavut,Canada. It is about 5 km (3.1 mi) southeast of Iqaluit on a small peninsula separating Koojesse (Kuujussi) Inlet from Tarr Inlet. Historically Apex was the place where most Inuit lived when Iqaluit was a military site and was off-limits to anyone not working at the base. The community is accessed by bridge or causeway,and bordered by a local creek (kuujuusi) and waterfall (kugluktuk). Located here are the women's shelter,a church,Nanook Elementary School,and a bed-and-breakfast,along with housing for about 60 families.
Monica Inunak Ell-Kanayuk is a Canadian politician and broadcaster who served in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2011 until 2017 and president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada from 2018 until 2022. Prior to her election as an MLA,she was a director of programming at the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation,president of the Baffin Chamber of Commerce,and owner-and-operator of sewing company Arctic Creations.
Pauloosie Keyootak is a Canadian Inuk politician from Broughton Island,Northwest Territories,now Qikiqtarjuaq,Nunavut. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut,representing the electoral district of Uqqummiut,in a by-election on February 9,2015. He won the by-election over Niore Iqalukjuak,who had been the second-place candidate behind Samuel Nuqingaq in the 2013 election,and former MLA James Arreak.
Simonie Michael was a Canadian politician from the eastern Northwest Territories who was the first Inuk elected to a legislature in Canada. Before becoming involved in politics,Michael worked as a carpenter and business owner,and was one of very few translators between Inuktitut and English. He became a prominent member of the Inuit co-operative housing movement and a community activist in Iqaluit,and was appointed to a series of governing bodies,including the precursor to the Iqaluit City Council.
