West St. Mary's Manor is a historic house on West St. Mary's Manor Road in rural St. Mary's County, Maryland. Built in the 1780s according to dendrochronology and with a four-room center-hall plan, and is located on the first recorded English land grant in what is now Maryland. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
Sotterley Plantation is a historic landmark plantation house located at 44300 Sotterley Lane in Hollywood, St. Mary's County, Maryland, USA. It is a long 1+1⁄2-story, nine-bay frame building, covered with wide, beaded clapboard siding and wood shingle roof, overlooking the Patuxent River. Also on the property are a sawn-log slave quarters of c. 1830, an 18th-century brick warehouse, and an early-19th-century brick meat house. Farm buildings include an early-19th-century corn crib and an array of barns and work buildings from the early 20th century. Opened to the public in 1961, it was once the home of George Plater (1735–1792), the sixth Governor of Maryland, and Herbert L. Satterlee (1863–1947), a New York business lawyer and son-in-law of J.P. Morgan.
The old St. Mary's Rectory is a gable-front 21⁄2-story frame dwelling of three by three bays, built in 1849 and enlarged to twice its size in 1856, and located in Aquasco, Prince George's County, Maryland. The structure is significant for its architecture and for its association with the history of St. Paul's Parish and the community of Aquasco. The rectory is an excellent example of a vernacular building with Greek Revival and Italianate stylistic elements. The floor plan exemplifies a style typical of the dwellings of successful landowners and merchants of the mid-19th century in Prince George's County. Original Greek Revival style elements include the front gable entrance facade, crown molded returned cornice, porch detail, interior stair detail, door and window surrounds, and the parlor mantel. Italianate elements include the heavy bracketing of the exterior cornice and the tripartite window in the north gable end.
The Captain Avery Museum is a historic home and museum at Shady Side, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It is a two-story frame building, located on a 0.75-acre (3,000 m2) rectangular lot. The house overlooks the West River and Chesapeake Bay. The two-story historic structure originally was the residence of the Chesapeake Bay waterman, Capt. Salem Avery, and was constructed about 1860. It was expanded in the nineteenth century and further expanded in the 1920s by the National Masonic Fishing and Country Club. The property consists of the main house with additions, three sheds formerly used as bath houses, and a modern boathouse built in 1993 that features the Edna Florence, a locally-built 1937 Chesapeake Bay deadrise workboat.
Abell House is a historic home located at Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. It was constructed about 1910 and is a two-story, three bay frame dwelling. The house commands sweeping views of Breton Bay, a sheltered harbor of the Potomac River. It exhibits a vernacular interpretation of the Queen Anne. It was built by Enoch B. Abell, a significant local political leader, attorney, and entrepreneur, who resided there until his death in December 1924.
Mulberry Fields is a historic home located at Beauvue, St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. It was built about 1763, and is a large 2+1⁄2-story, 5-bay by 2-bay, hip-roofed brick house. On the front is a two-story Doric portico, built about 1820. The house is the only remaining Georgian "mansion-type" home in an area and has a panoramic view of the Potomac River, with a mile-long allee stretching downhill to the riverbank.
Woodlawn is a historic home located at St. Mary's City, St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. It is a Federal-style, two-story, five-bay frame house with brick ends, which is two rooms deep and has a gable roof. Each brick end contains a large double exterior chimney. The house is a large and fully developed Federal period house exhibiting one of the most important characteristics of Southern Maryland's 18th-century architecture: brick ends with frame facades. It is now operated as a bed and breakfast.
Sandgates On Cat Creek is a historic home located at Oakville, St. Mary's County, Maryland. It is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay frame structure with brick ends built between 1740 and 1780. It is one of the best and most authentic restorations in Southern Maryland.
St. George's Episcopal Church is an historic church located at 44965 Blake Creek Road, in Valley Lee, St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. It was built in 1799 on the same site as three other, earlier churches. It is a one-story, five bay, rectangular, gable-front, Flemish bond brick structure. The interior has been restored to its 1884 appearance. The church is surrounded by a graveyard, enclosed by a low brick wall. It is generally believed that St. George's is the site of the oldest Anglican church in Maryland whose parish is still in existence. William and Mary Parish, as it was originally known, was one of the original 30 Anglican parishes in the Province of Maryland.
Cecil's Mill Historic District is a national historic district in Great Mills, St. Mary's County, Maryland. It consists of four buildings: Cecil's Mill, Cecil Store, the Cecil Home, and Old Holy Face Church. Cecil's Mill is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-framed structure, that was used until 1959. Across from the mill is the store, house, and Holy Face Church. The store was constructed in the 1920s and is a good example of a rural store. The Cecil Home was constructed in the late 19th century. Old Holy Face Church is a 2+1⁄2-story frame church that was abandoned in the 1940s.
St. Francis Xavier Church and Newtown Manor House Historic District is the first county-designated historic district in Saint Mary's County, the "Mother County" of Maryland and is located in Compton, Maryland, near the county seat of Leonardtown. The district marks a location and site important in the 17th-century ecclesiastical history of Maryland, as an example of a self-contained Jesuit community made self-supporting by the surrounding 700-acre (2.8 km2) farm. The two principal historic structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Archaeological remains associated with the site date back to the early colonial period, mid-17th century.
The Inns on the National Road is a national historic district near Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. It originally consisted of 11 Maryland inns on the National Road and located in Allegany and Garrett counties. Those that remain stand as the physical remains of the almost-legendary hospitality offered on this well-traveled route to the west.
Exeter is a historic home located at Federalsburg, Caroline County, Maryland. It is composed of two distinct sections constructed during the 19th century. The front section is a three-bay wide, two-story frame structure covered with cypress shingles. Behind it is a 1+1⁄2-story frame wing, four bays long, covered with beaded weatherboard. Outbuildings include a brick meathouse and frame milkhouse.
The Robert Clagett Farm is a historic home and farm located at Knoxville, Washington County, Maryland, United States. The house is a one-story sandstone structure measuring three bays long by two bays deep in the Georgian-style. The house features a two-story galleried porch and an interior stone chimney. The farm also includes a small 1875 stone-arched bridge, a mid-19th century dairy barn, a small shed-roofed frame outbuilding which may once have housed pigs, and a 1930s frame garage.
Woodlands is a historic home located at Perryville, Cecil County, Maryland, United States. It appears to have been constructed in two principal periods: the original 2+1⁄2-story section built between 1810 and 1820 of stuccoed stone and a 1+1⁄2-story rear kitchen wing; and two bays of stuccoed brick, with double parlors on the first story, and a one-story, glazed conservatory constructed between 1840 and 1850. The home features Greek Revival details. Also on the property are a 2-story stone smokehouse and tenant house, a small frame barn and corn house, a square frame privy with pyramidal roof, a carriage house, frame garage, and a large frame bank barn.
St. Francis Xavier Church, or Old Bohemia, is a historic Roman Catholic church located at Warwick, Cecil County, Maryland, United States. It is located on what was once the Jesuit estate known as Bohemia Manor.
Best Endeavor, also known as Buena Vista Farm, is a historic home and farm complex located at Churchville, Harford County, Maryland. It is a large, multi-sectioned, mid to late 18th century, partially stuccoed stone telescope house. It has two primary sections: the western unit, constructed about 1740, is four bays wide and about 1785, a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay, side-passage / double parlor block was added against the east gable. Also on the property and dating from the mid-19th century or earlier are a stone smokehouse, a timber-framed barn with board and batten siding, a timber-framed shed, and the ruin of a large stone and frame bank barn.
Jacob F. Shaffer Farm is a historic home and farm complex located at Millers, Carroll County, Maryland. The complex consists of a brick house built in 1854, a rare stone bank barn, a frame summer kitchen, and a frame corn crib. The house is a two-story, three-bay wide, banked Federal / Greek Revival style brick structure with Flemish bond on the east-facing facade.
Mattapax is a historic home located at Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. It is a 1+1⁄2-story brick house, three bays wide, and one room deep, with flush brick chimneys at either end of a pitched gable roof built about 1760. In 1949 a restoration resulted in the construction of a brick wing to replace an earlier frame wing. Also on the property are a frame cottage, a large horse barn, and a frame wagon shed.
Round About Hills or Peacefields is a historic slave plantation home located at Glenwood, Howard County, Maryland. An alternate address for this house is 14581 McClintock Drive, Glenwood, Maryland. It was built about 1773 on a 266-acre land patent and consists of a 1+1⁄2-story frame house with a stone end. Thomas Beale Dorsey inherited the property in 1794 then exchanged his interest in the plantation with Thomas Cook's stagecoach wayside town Cooksville.
