Bulbophyllum Genus of orchids

Bulbophyllum is a genus of mostly epiphytic and lithophytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae. It is the largest genus in the orchid family and one of the largest genera of flowering plants with more than 2,000 species, exceeded in number only by Astragalus. These orchids are found in diverse habitats throughout most of the warmer parts of the world including Africa, southern Asia, Latin America, the West Indies, and various islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Orchids in this genus have thread-like or fibrous roots that creep over the surface of trees or rocks or hang from branches. The stem is divided into a rhizome and a pseudobulb, a feature that distinguished this genus from Dendrobium. There is usually only a single leaf at the top of the pseudobulb and from one to many flowers are arranged along an unbranched flowering stem that arises from the base of the pseudobulb. Several attempts have been made to separate Bulbophyllum into smaller genera, but most have not been accepted by the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families.

Thelymitra Genus of orchids

Thelymitra, commonly known as sun orchids, is a genus of more than 100 species of plants in the orchid family, Orchidaceae. Unlike most other orchids, sun orchids lack a highly modified labellum and all three petals are similar in size, shape and colour. The column is, however, highly modified and usually has prominent wings or glands which are helpful in identifying the species. Most sun orchids close their flowers at night, in cloudy or cool weather, giving rise to their common name. The scientific name means "woman's hood" and refers to the hooded column present in most, but not all species. Most species are endemic to Australia although some are found as far from there as the Philippines and Indonesia. The type species, Thelymitra longifolia, the first to be formally described, was collected in New Zealand.

Soterosanthus Genus of orchids

Soterosanthus shepheardii is a species of orchid found in Ecuador and Colombia, and the only species of the monotypic genus Soterosanthus. This species segregated from Sievekingia because of its upright inflorescence. Flowers are somewhat similar to Sievekingia as is the plant stature, being on the small side, around 6" tall. Plants are semi-deciduous and warmth tolerant. Grow in small pots of medium grade bark mix under same conditions as for Gongora; shaded light, even moisture, drier in winter. It is a rarely seen relative of Stanhopea.

Phalaenopsis lobbii Species of orchid

Phalaenopsis lobbii, also known as 罗氏蝴蝶兰 in Chinese, is a species of orchid found from the eastern Himalaya to Indochina. It is named in honour of Cornish plant hunter Thomas Lobb. These epiphytic plants have aerial, fleshy, dorsiventrally flattened roots, which radiate from a short stem, which is inclosed by leaf petioles. The stem bears 3-5 slightly fleshy, thin leaves, which are commonly shed in winter. Some plants retain up to two leaves, but most exhibit deciduous leaflessness. Small flowers with reflexed petals of 1.5 cm in diameter are produced between March and May on racemose inflorescences. The midlobe of the labellum shows brown colouration. It is a rare species with extremely small population sizes. It is found in evergreen broad leaved forests on limestone at altitudes of 150–330 m.

Bulbophyllum longiflorum Species of orchid

Bulbophyllum longiflorum, commonly known as the pale umbrella orchid, is a species of epiphytic or lithophytic orchid. It has a creeping rhizome, widely spaced, dark green pseudobulbs with a single large, fleshy leaf, and flowers spreading in a semicircular umbel, resembling one-half of an umbrella. The flowers are canoe-shaped, greenish cream-coloured to yellowish with purple dots. It has a wide distribution and is found in parts of Africa, on islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and northern Australia.
