Bumblebee: The Movie (also known as Transformers Universe: Bumblebee or Bumblebee) is an upcoming American science fiction film directed by Travis Knight with a screenplay by Christina Hodson. It is a spin-off of the live-action Transformers film series based on the Transformers ' character of the same name and a prequel to the 2007 film. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Gracie Dzienny, Rachel Crow and Pamela Adlon. Principal photography on the film began on July 31, 2017 in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

This is the first film in the live-action Transformers series not to be directed by Michael Bay, though he will act as producer, and is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2018.

Transformers is a series of American science fiction action films based on Transformers franchise which began in the 1980s. Michael Bay has directed the first five films: Transformers (2007), Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017). The most recent film, a spin-off, Bumblebee, directed by Travis Knight and produced by Bay, was released on December 21, 2018. The series has been distributed by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks. Aside from Bumblebee, which received positive reviews, the Transformers film series has received negative to mixed reception. It is the 13th-highest-grossing film series, with a total of $4.3 billion; two films in the series have individually grossed over $1 billion.

Synopsis

Twenty years before the events of the first film, in 1987, Bumblebee takes refuge in a small California beach town junkyard. A teenage girl named Charlie Watson learns that it is no ordinary Volkswagen Beetle. [3] [4]

Bumblebee is a fictional robot superhero from the Transformers franchise. In most versions, Bumblebee is a small, yellow with black stripes Autobot, with most of his alternative vehicle modes inspired by several generations of the Chevrolet American muscle cars – with the live-action film versions being a yellow Camaro with black racing stripes. The original vehicle-mode design was based on a classic European Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. The character is named after the Bumblebee, a black-and-yellow striped bee which inspired his paint scheme. Bumblebee appears in most of the series and later the main protagonist in Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Bumblebee, and Transformers: Cyberverse.

Production

On February 12, 2016, it was announced that the sixth film in the Transformers series Transformers 6 would be released on June 8, 2018, while later it was revealed that the film would be an untitled spin-off, featuring Bumblebee. [9] On November 11, 2016, Deadline reported that Paramount Pictures was moving forward with the project by revealing that Christina Hodson had written the script for the spin-off, and she was one of the female writers Paramount and Michael Bay hired in the "writers room." [10] On March 2, 2017, Deadline reported that Travis Knight was hired to direct the film. [11] In May 2017, it was revealed that the film's story would be set in the 1980s, and that it would have fewer robots. [12] In the same month, it was announced that it would be titled as Transformers Universe: Bumblebee. [13]

Casting

In May 2017, it was reported that Hailee Steinfeld was in talks for the female lead in the film, and she confirmed her involvement later in June. [14] [15] On July 11, 2017, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. joined the cast as the male lead. [16] On July 12, 2017, The Tracking Board confirmed that Rachel Crow had been cast in the film. [17] On July 13, 2017, the rest of the core cast of the film was confirmed, including Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny. [18] On July 22, 2017, it was reported that Pamela Adlon had been cast in the film to play Steinfeld's mother. [19] On July 31, 2017, the film added John Cena to its lead cast along with Kenneth Choi and Stephen Schneider in the supporting cast. [3]

On October 2, 2017, while interviewing in promotion for the home media release of Transformers: The Last Knight , voice actor Peter Cullen revealed he will be in the film. [7]

On December 11, 2017, it was revealed that actor Martin Short has joined the film's voice work. [20]

On May 31, 2018, voice actor Jess Harnell reveals he will be reprising Barricade from The Last Knight & the 2007 film. [21]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on July 31, 2017, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, and was scheduled to finish on November 16, 2017, under the working title Brighton Falls. Filming concluded 6 days ahead of schedule on November 10, 2017. [3] [22] [23]

Later, in November 2017, the film was revealed to have changed its title to Bumblebee: The Movie, as well as having wrapped up filming. [24]

Music

Dario Marianelli is set to provide the music score for the film. [25] Making this the first time Steve Jablonsky has not scored one of the films in the franchise.

Release

Bumblebee: The Movie is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2018 by Paramount Pictures, after initially being set for a June 8, 2018 release. [3] The 1st trailer will be released on June 5, 2018.
