He previously served as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996 and as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. A member of the Janata Dal (Secular),he currently serves as the party's president since 1999 and as the Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka since 2020.
