CNA938 (also known as NewsRadio 938, 938Live and 938Now) (officially call sign as NewsRadio 938) is an English radio station of Mediacorp in Singapore. Since mid-2019, the station runs as the complementary to its parent television counterpart in line with the latter's 20th anniversary. CNA938 broadcasts news and talk programmes from 06:00 to 23:59 SST daily, followed by an audio simulcast of CNA during overnight hours. CNA938 was officially similar and related to BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service based in London and the New York Public Radio's WNYC-AM and WNYC-FM based in Manhattan, New York City.

History

NewsRadio 938 (1998 - 2004)

Plans for the launch of NewsRadio 938 was announced alongside two new radio stations by then-Minister for Information and the Arts George Yeo in March 1998. The station would be a spin-off of One FM, which used to air news-heavy content. The launch date was set for 2 October 1998, with sampler programming beginning in mid-June. It would broadcast eighteen hours a day with news every 15 minutes, talk and some light instrumental music. [1]

The 93.8 MHz frequency was originally known as NewsRadio 938 and was officially opening ceremony or grand opening by the President of the Republic of Singapore Ong Teng Cheong on New Year's Day 1998 at stroke of midnight SST. The brand was founded under the Radio Corporation of Singapore (RCS), which took over Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC)'s radio-broadcasting operations on 1 October 1994 when it was privatised under Mediacorp's predecessor Singapore International Media (SIM Group of Companies). When the Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) rebranded to MediaCorp on 12 February 2001, RCS subsequently became MediaCorp Radio.

938LIVE (2005 - 2017)

NewsRadio 938 rebranded as 938LIVE in 2005. 24-hour broadcasts started on 1 January 2008. [2] A number of a new programmes and a stronger focus on news were introduced later in 2015.

938NOW (2017 - 2019)

On 6 November 2017, the station was relaunched with a new name, 938NOW, with a number of a new programmes and a stronger focus on news and lifestyle. [3] It has expanded its content to include more tips and insights from experts in business, finance, health and wellness, medicine, parenting, food, technology, leisure, sports and travel. The station's new tagline was “In The Know, On The Go.”

CNA938 (2019 - present)

In March 2019, in conjunction with CNA's 20th anniversary, Mediacorp announced that the station will be rebranded as CNA938 (initially as CNA Talk). The new radio station was launched on 3 June that year.

GOLD 905 is an English radio station of Mediacorp in Singapore. It broadcasts classic hits from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Their DJs include Brian Richmond, who has more than 40 years of experience in the radio industry. It is one of the nation's oldest stations, tracing its origins back to the beginning of regulated radio broadcasting in Singapore/Straits Settlements along with Warna 942, Capital 958 and Oli 968 on 1 March 1937. Gold 905 was officially similar and related to BBC Radio 2 after BBC Empire Service.

Public radio broadcasting began in Singapore in the April of 1925 after the Amateur Wireless Society of Malaya obtained a temporary license to broadcast. Radio Singapura was established as the first local mass market radio service in 1959. Subsequently, on February 15, 1963, before the withdrawal of the British Armed Forces and after the merger with Malaya, Singapore's first television service began as Televisyen Singapura under its owner, Radio Television Singapore (RTS).

XFM 96.3 was an Expat radio station of Mediacorp in Singapore. Broadcasting on 96.3 MHz, it was Singapore's only radio station that broadcast a mix of Japanese, French, Korean, Hindi, Bangladeshi and German programmes. A blend of World Music from Brazil, Greece, Italy, Lebanon and Spain would also be played during an automated music marathon daily.

Warna 942 is a Malay language contemporary music radio station operated by Mediacorp. It broadcasts Malay hits and provides an Islamic General Service for Singapore. It is one of the nation's oldest stations, tracing its origins back to the beginning of regulated radio broadcasting in Singapore/Straits Settlements along with Gold 905, Capital 958 and Oli 968 on 1 March 1937.

CAPITAL 958 (城市頻道) is a Mandarin news and information station operating in Singapore, managed by Mediacorp. It was the only Mandarin radio station in Singapore before the official introduction of its sister channel such as YES 933 and Love 972 on 1 January 1990 and 23 September 1994 respectively. The station mainly provides local and international news, current affairs, in depth analysis interviews into different key topics and playing of Mandarin hits. It also broadcasts news daily in other languages including Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka and Fuzhounese on selected timings from Monday to Sunday. During weekends, listeners could also look forward to songs from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Arnold Gay is a television presenter and former radio presenter from Singapore. He is currently presenting the breakfast show "Asia First" on CNA together with Julie Yoo, Teresa Tang and Elizabeth Neo from Jan 2024. He previously worked at Singapore radio stations Class 95FM, Power 98 FM, Kiss 92FM, as well as sister channel CNA938. He was also a broadcast journalist at various TV stations including CNA, CNBC Asia, Bloomberg TV and Reuters TV.
