The Cairns Pop-Up Arena was a sports arena in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. [1] The arena was the temporary host of the Cairns Taipans and the South East Melbourne Phoenix, whilst the Cairns Convention Centre underwent a redevelopment.
The arena had a floor space of 6,500 square metres (70,000 sq ft) on a 4.8-hectare (12-acre) site just outside the Cairns CBD. As a former Bunnings building it only contained one hall, which was fitted with grandstand seating, air conditioning, broadcast lighting, video scoreboards, a public address system, change room facilities, public amenities and catering facilities. Following months of debate about the future of the Cairns Taipans in Cairns due to the delay of upgrades to the Cairns Convention Centre and no other suitable venue ready, on 10 July 2020 Queensland Government Sports Minister Mick de Brenni unveiled plans to upgrade the former Bunnings building on the corner of Spence and Fearnley Streets which had been vacant since 2015. On 10 July 2020, when de Brenni unveiled the plans to upgrade the former Bunnings building he announced that the Cairns Taipans were going to use the stadium until the Cairns Convention Centre upgrades are completed. [1] The stadium is used by the club for training and pre-season games, as an alternative to Cairns Basketball Stadium. [2]
On 15 September 2020, Suncorp Super Netball announced that they would be hosting three games at the venue for the league's Indigenous round. [3]
On 9 October 2020, the Women's National Basketball League announced that they would start their 2020–21 season in a North Queensland hub, with the Cairns Pop-Up Arena to host 20 games. [4]
On 10 February 2021, it was announced that the New Zealand Tall Blacks would be hosting a 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifier against the Australian Boomers on 20 February 2021. [5] The Boomers won the game 81–52. [6]
NBL schedule changes due to COVID-19 induced border closures forced the South East Melbourne Phoenix to host games against the Cairns Taipans and the Brisbane Bullets at the arena. [7] [8]
In October 2021, following the completion of upgrades to the Convention Centre, the Queensland Government announced that the Cairns Pop-Up Arena would be converted into a film studio for Screen Queensland. The transition of the arena into a film studio costs $6.8 million and will be completed by mid-2022. [9]
The Silverdome, Australia's first indoor velodrome, is an indoor sporting and entertainment venue located in Launceston, Tasmania built in 1984. The Silverdome was built at an estimated cost of A$4 million, as the Tasmanian Government "proposed a world class facility" to replace the run down velodrome in the Launceston suburb of St Leonards. In January 1985, the facility's opening coincided with the City of Launceston Cycling Club Championships. Although "custom built for cycling", the Silverdome has hosted various concerts and other sporting events. The Collingwood Magpies Netball team, who compete in the Suncorp Super Netball league, have played a home match each season at the venue.

John Cain Arena is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment arena located within Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is the second-largest venue and show court for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam professional tennis tournament held each calendar year. The arena also hosts various other sporting and entertainment events throughout the year.
The State Basketball Centre is a sports arena located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia which is mainly used for basketball. However, the centre has been used for several other events. The stadium features six courts, including one basketball show court with seating for 3,200. Facilities cater primarily for basketball, with five courts being able to be configured for netball. The stadium houses the offices of Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria, Knox Basketball Incorporated, South East Melbourne Phoenix and is the home of the WNBL's Melbourne Boomers. The Queensland State Netball Centre, also known commercially as Nissan Arena, is a multi-purpose facility located in the southern Brisbane suburb of Nathan. The centre features a 5,000 seat indoor arena that is the home court of Super Netball team the Queensland Firebirds, as well as National Basketball League club the Brisbane Bullets. It is the administrative headquarters of Netball Queensland and provides training facilities for elite-level and community-based netball clubs in Queensland.
The 2019–20 Cairns Taipans season was the 21st season for the Cairns Taipans in the NBL, and their second season under the guidance of Head Coach Mike Kelly. The team consisted of their imports, eight regular roster players and their two development players. The squad was widely considered to be the underdogs of the NBL, with their roster lacking depth and having four rookies on their roster. These predictions also coupled with the Taipans' previous season, during which they struggled to compile wins and finished with a 6–22 record.
Cairns Basketball Stadium is a basketball facility in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Currently comprising a centre court, four side courts, a sports science centre, a weights room and multiple locker rooms, the facility currently hosts the Cairns Taipans, Cairns Marlins and Cairns Dolphins training sessions, the Taipans' NBL pre-season games and the Marlins' and Dolphins' NBL1 North games. The facility also hosts regular junior and senior competitions run by the Cairns Basketball Association.
