Cake is a Swedish maker of electric motorcycles and mopeds. It is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and commenced operations in 2016. The first model made available to the public was named Kalk and was introduced in 2018. [1] Cake was founded by Stefan Ytterborn who also is the CEO of the company. [2] [3]

Cake has struggled financially recently including not making payroll. [4]

Cake has also had to recall at least two models, including one due to battery fires.

In February 2024, Cake filed for bankruptcy in Sweden. [5]

Model families

Cake currently manufactures three main models, all built on an electric drivetrain. The model families are called Makka, Ösa and Kalk. Each product family is available in various editions and configurations.

Makka

Makka is an all-electric moped, available in both commuter and commercial configurations. Top speeds range between 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and 45 km/h (28 mph), depending on model, and they are all street legal. The commercial editions are designed for short-haul transports, feature built-in cargo racks and have a range of up to 110 kilometers.

Ösa

The Ösa is built around a unibeam-concept that allows accessories such as baskets and trailers to be mounted directly on the bike. It has a battery that can be used both to run the vehicle as well as a power source for any external device attached to it. [6] It is available both as a moped as well as a motorbike, with a range of up to 160 kilometers (100 miles).

Kalk

The Kalk was Cake´s first electric motorcycle and was made available to the general public in 2018. Today it is available in several builds and configurations, both street legal versions and off-road models.

Kalk AP

A special edition of the Kalk, the Kalk AP, is used by park rangers at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC), situated adjacent to the Kruger National Park, South Africa. [7] The Kalk AP has been modified from the standard off-road Kalk by adding a lightweight frame, a sealed drivetrain and a different suspension. [8] [9]

Racing series

Cake launched a new electric racing format, Cake Worlds, in 2021. Compared to traditional motocross racing, the Cake Worlds format utilises a tighter, narrower track, adapted to suit the inherent properties of the lighter, more responsive electric motorcycles used. The first time the format was used was on the island of Gotland, where the first Cake Worlds Race took place in August 2021. Professional mountainbike rider Seth Stevens (USA) was crowned 2021 Cake Worlds Race champion. [10] [11] [12]

In 2022, the Cake Worlds Race was expanded to include four competitions, taking place in the US, France and Sweden. [13] [14]

Supermoto is a form of motorcycle racing held on race tracks that alternate between three kinds of track surfaces: the hard packed dirt of flat track, the irregular jumps and obstacles of motocross, and the paved tarmac of road racing. Supermoto was originally conceived by Gavin Trippe in 1979 as a segment of the TV show Wide World of Sports. It was something like an all-star game, in which the best riders from the three separate genres of motorcycle racing could temporarily leave their normal race class to come together and compete for the title of best all around racer. Today supermoto is a distinct genre of its own and riders in the other classes do not routinely cross over into supermoto.

Metalurgia Casal was the largest Portuguese motorcycle manufacturer, based in Aveiro. It was founded in 1964 with João Casal as the managing director and Robert Zipprich and other ex-Zundapp engineers as the technical managers. Its first products included agricultural machinery and two strokes' moped engines based on Zundapp ones. By 1967 it was producing complete motorcycles, the first one being a scooter, the S170 Carina - a copy of the Zundapp R50 - with a 50cc and 4 speed engine. Shortly after it rolled out its first mopeds, the K160, K161, K162 and K163 with two speeds, and the K181 with four speeds. Although most of its production were mopeds, it also produced 125cc bikes, namely the K260, K270 and K276 all, and it had an advanced plan for a 250cc, the K280. Its range included some 30 or more models, with automatic engines, 2 speed, 4 speed, 5 speed and 6 speed engines Even though its main market was, by far, the domestic market, it also exported some 10% of its production, mostly to the UK, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. It also had a promising joint venture with Solo of Germany under which some models were sold in the German market under the Solo brand. Car production was also planned, but not realised. As the increased purchasing power in their home country Portugal, their most important market, slowed the sales of mopeds, bankruptcy was a fact in February 2000. In connection with this, unfortunately, parts of the company's archives were destroyed.

Electric motorcycles and scooters are plug-in electric vehicles with two or three wheels. Power is supplied by a rechargeable battery that drives one or more electric motors. Electric scooters are distinguished from motorcycles by having a step-through frame, instead of being straddled. Electric bicycles are similar vehicles, distinguished by retaining the ability to be propelled by the rider pedaling in addition to battery propulsion.

FN is a Belgian company established in 1889 to make arms and ammunition, and from 1901 to 1967 was also a motorcycle manufacturer. FN manufactured one of the world's first four-cylinder motorcycles, was famous for the use of shaft drive in all models from 1903 to 1923, achieved success in sprint and long-distance motorcycle racing, and after 1945, also in motocross.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Beta (motorcycle manufacturer)</span> Italian motorcycle manufacturer

Beta is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer, specialising in off-road motorcycles. Beta is best known for their popular observed trials bikes. In 2005, they launched a range of enduro motorcycles using KTM engines. In 2010 they launched the new RR series, with a new engine made in-house. Beta motorcycles have been used by world trials champions such as Jordi Tarrés, Dougie Lampkin, Albert Cabestany and Enduro riders Steve Holcombe and Brad Freeman. Production in 2018 was expected to be in excess of 20,000 motorcycles, ranging in size from 50 cc to 480 cc.

The Yamaha YZ450F is a four-stroke racing motocross bike built by Yamaha Motor Corporation. It was the successor to the previous YZ426F which was discontinued in 2003. It is credited by Cycle World and Dirt Rider magazines as the bike that started the four-stroke dirt bike revolution. The 2006 YZ250F and YZ450F were the first production motorcycles equipped with titanium suspension springs.
