Cantonments is an affluent suburb of the Ghanaian city Accra, in the La Dade Kotopon Municipal District, a district in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. [1] [2]

Overview

The Cantonments area was intended to become a military quarters under the British Colonial government, in the Gold Coast, now Ghana.

However, it was upgraded to become a modern planned residential settlement. Most of the homes in the area have three to four bedrooms and are often occupied by the wealthy, academics or government officials. [3]

Many diplomatic missions in the country are in the Cantonments area including the U.S. Embassy.

The Flower Pot interchange was constructed to ease traffic to Cantonments. [4]

Pokuase, also spelled Pokoasi, is a suburb of Accra, the capital city of Ghana and spans the area from Pokuase, leading off the Accra-Kumasi motorway on the right coming from Accra central; and leading off the motorway at Pokuase Junction and rising to ‘Okai Kwei Hill’, on the left coming from town. It is a mixture of lively retail shopping areas, with local stores, bars or 'drinking spots', bus/taxi stations, and a market. It also has many hotels, guest houses and rental apartments- such as the eco-chic Legassi Gardens Apartments-, and 'high-end' developing residential estates, such as Ofankor Hills Estates and Franko Estates, amongst many others; as well as the long-established executive gated community of ACP Estates.; and HFS Estates which borders the erstwhile Gua Koo Sacred Grove in Pokuase.

Burma Camp is the headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghanaian Ministry of Defence. The camp is in Accra, Greater Accra, Ghana. It retains notoriety and fear from previous Ghanaian military regimes, when civilians who entered the camp might not re-emerge. It was the site of fighting during the June 1979 coup that placed Jerry Rawlings in power. The museum was opened on 5 March 1957. Burma Camp has twenty-four (24) schools, with a learner population of 14,712.

Spintex Road is a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana. The name originally denotes the road which is parallel to the Tema Motorway, has become generic and is used when describing the area along the route. Spintex Road is a vibrant travel destination in the colourful city of Accra, the capital of Ghana, winding down from the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to the beach at Tema. In between, one will find market stalls overflowing with produce, smart city malls and a huge selection of restaurants to choose from.

Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Accra Metropolitan Assembly in 1988, until the eastern portion of the district was split off to create La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been retained as Accra Metropolitan Assembly. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has La as its capital town.
