The Asimah Governorate or Capital Governorate [a] sometimes referred to as Al Kuwayt is one of the six governorates of Kuwait. It comprises the historic core of Kuwait City, industrial and port areas such as Shuwaikh Port and Doha Port, and several offshore islands.

Contents

The governorate houses most of Kuwait's financial and business centres such as the Kuwait Stock Exchange.

Government

Mr. Nasir Sabah Nasir Mubarak I was governor from 1962 until his death in 1979. Salim Sabah Nasir Mubarak became the next governor, circa 1979. [4] Jabir Abdallah Jabir Abdallah II become governor in 1985. Thabit Al Muhanna became governor in 2014. [4]

Mubarak Al-Sabah "the Great", nicknamed "The lion of the peninsula", was the seventh ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait, from 18 May 1896 until his death on 18 November 1915. Mubarak ascended the throne after assassinating his predecessor and half-brother, Muhammad Al-Sabah. Known for his significant role in shaping modern Kuwait, the constitution of the State of Kuwait mandates that the Emir of Kuwait must be a descendant of Mubarak from the ruling Al-Sabah family.

Sheikh Abdullah II Sabah II Al-Jabir I Al-Sabah was a cavalry commander in the Military of Kuwait and was the fifth ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait from 1866 to 1892. The eldest son of the fourth ruler of Kuwait, Sabah II, his reign was marked by efforts to manage natural disasters, maintain stability, and fortify ties with the Ottoman Empire, a key supplier of drinking water for Kuwait. Notably, the first coins were minted in Kuwait during his tenure.

Nasser Al-Mohammed Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is a Kuwaiti politician who served as Prime Minister of Kuwait from 7 February 2006 until resigning on 28 November 2011.

Silk City is a large infrastructure project in northern Kuwait which is currently under development. The project will be built in individual phases. In May 2019, the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway opened as part of the Silk City project's first phase, the project's first phase also includes Mubarak Al Kabeer Port which is currently under construction. The Silk City project is part of China's Belt and Road Initiative.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah</span> Kuwaiti royal and politician (1942–2024)

Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah was a Kuwaiti royal and politician who served as the prime minister of Kuwait from 2011 to 2019. He previously served as minister of defense as well as deputy prime minister. In April 2021 a Kuwaiti court ordered his detention on corruption charges.

Al Jahra is a city and area located 32 kilometres (20 mi) west of the centre of Kuwait City in Kuwait. Al Jahra is the capital of the Al Jahra Governorate of Kuwait as well as the surrounding Al Jahra District which is agriculturally based. Encyclopædia Britannica recorded the population in 1980 as 67,311. Historically, Jahra was a predominantly agricultural area. There are currently various farms in Jahra.

Shuwaikh Port is an urban industrial area within the Al Asimah Governorate in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Mubarak Al Kabeer Port is a port in Bubiyan Island, Kuwait. The port is currently under construction. In April 2021, the port's first phase was completed. The port is part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sheikhdom of Kuwait</span> Middle Eastern state (1752–1961)

The Sheikhdom of Kuwait was a sheikhdom from 1752 to 1961. The sheikhdom became a British protectorate between 1899 and 1961 following the Anglo-Kuwaiti agreement of 1899. This agreement was made between Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah and the British Government in India, primarily as a defensive measure against threats from the Ottoman Empire. After 1961, the sheikdom became the state of Kuwait.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah</span> Crown Prince of Kuwait (born 1953)

Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah is the Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait. A senior member of the Al-Sabah ruling family, he held various government positions from 2006 to 2022, serving as Foreign Minister from 2011 to 2019 and as Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022. He was appointed Crown Prince by Emir Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on 1 June 2024.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Areas of Kuwait</span>

Kuwait is divided into six governorates, and in each there are several areas. They are much less commonly called by other names such as districts or towns. However, they are commonly known inside the English-speaking community in Kuwait and are officially translated to as areas. The Arabic word for area, Mintaqah, means both area and region. Areas are further sub-divided into blocks, each of which is referred by a number. All blocks are divided into streetsšāriʿ. Then some areas may be further sub-divided into Jadda, which is translated to avenue or lane.

South al-Mutlaa is a new city under construction in Jahra Governorate, northern Kuwait. It is the largest housing project in the Kuwaiti history, ultimately intended to provide homes for 400,000 people in 12 suburbs, together with schools, mosques, mini-markets and health-centres. The city was approximately 39% complete by May 2019, and is expected to be completed by 2023. South al-Mutlaa is one of several new cities planned by the Kuwaiti government, alongside South Saad Al Abdullah and South Sabah Al Ahmad. On 29 March 2023, A French company by the name of Egis Group has taken management over the construction of the city.
