Casey Brixton Weathers (born June 10,1985) is an American professional baseball coach and former pitcher. He was drafted 8th overall in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the Colorado Rockies. [1] He played in college for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Weathers attended Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove,California,and then Sacramento City College where he played in the outfield. During one practice,Weathers claimed he could throw harder than teammate Adam Eisner. This ongoing banter led to Weathers lighting up the radar gun for fun. Despite his wanting to remain an outfielder,once he hit 94 MPH on the gun,he was eventually converted to a pitcher by the coaching staff.[ citation needed ] Weathers was also teammates with Stephen Bautista,Brian Smith,Shaun Stinson,and Cincinnati Reds pitcher David Hernandez on the semi-pro Elk Grove Leprechauns where he led the league in home runs.
After two years at Sacramento City College,Weathers transferred to Vanderbilt University. After his first year at Vanderbilt,Weathers participated in the Alaskan Summer League and was a late addition to the Team USA roster where he joined manager Tim Corbin and teammates David Price and Pedro Alvarez. Weathers enjoyed a successful senior season at Vanderbilt where he led the team in saves and tied for the team lead in wins. He was named a First Team All American and a finalist for National Stopper of the Year.
Weathers was drafted by the Colorado Rockies with the 8th overall pick of the 2007 amateur draft and signed a contract on June 18,2007,with a $1.8 million signing bonus. [2]
On October 31,2008,Weathers underwent Tommy John surgery to repair his pitching elbow. He was added to the Rockies' 40 man roster after the 2010 season. [3]
On December 8,2011,Weathers was traded along with Ian Stewart to the Chicago Cubs for Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu.
On March 13,2012,Weathers was outrighted to the minor leagues and opened the 2012 season with the AA Tennessee Smokies. [4]
Weathers signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants in December 2013. He was released in March 2014.
On May 26,2014,Weathers signed a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. [5]
On December 31,2014,Weathers signed a minor league deal with the Cleveland Indians. [6]
On April 20,2017,Weathers signed with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. He was released on December 15,2017.
Weathers was hired prior to the 2020 season by the Cincinnati Reds as a rehabilitation coach and Arizona League pitching coach. [7] As of 2022,he is the pitching coach of the Triple-A Louisville Bats.[ citation needed ]
Weathers pitched for the United States national baseball team in the 2008 Summer Olympics,winning the Bronze medal. He pitched in three games,recording a save in Match #28 against Japan.
Weathers has two power offerings and durability,as evidenced by back-to-back outings over an early February 2007 weekend. [13]
Timothy Carter Corbin is the head baseball coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team. Since becoming coach at Vanderbilt in 2003,Corbin has transformed the Commodores from a perennial Southeastern Conference doormat to an elite program. When he arrived in 2003,Vanderbilt had only had six winning seasons in SEC play since baseball became a scholarship sport in 1968,and had only been to three NCAA Tournaments in school history. Since then,they have been to all but one NCAA Tournament since 2004.
David Taylor Price is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Price was selected first overall in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and made his MLB debut in September 2008. He has also played for the Detroit Tigers,Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.
The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team is an American National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college baseball team. From Vanderbilt University in Nashville,Tennessee,the team participates in the Eastern division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and plays its home games on campus at Hawkins Field. The Commodores are coached by three-time National Coach of the Year and three-time SEC Coach of the Year,Tim Corbin. During Corbin's tenure as head coach,Vanderbilt has become one of the premier college baseball programs in the United States,responsible for 19 first-round picks in the MLB draft.
James Clayton Russell is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He played college baseball at Navarro College and the University of Texas at Austin. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft out of the University of Texas at Austin and made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on April 5,2010. He has also played for the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
Rex Colman Brothers is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. After playing college baseball at Lipscomb University,Brothers was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 2009 MLB draft. He debuted with the Rockies in 2011 and played for them until 2015. Tyler Joseph Beede,nicknamed Beedah,is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the first round,with the 21st overall selection,of the 2011 MLB draft,but he turned down a $2.5 million signing bonus to instead attend Vanderbilt University. He played college baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores,and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants as the 14th pick in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft. Beede made his MLB debut in 2018.
David Andrew Berg is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He attended the University of California,Los Angeles (UCLA),where he played college baseball for the UCLA Bruins baseball team. He was named an All-American and Pac-12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year in 2013. He set a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record for saves in a single season with 24. The Texas Rangers selected Berg in the 17th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He did not sign with the Rangers and returned to UCLA for his senior season. He was then drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He left professional baseball in 2018 without ever playing in the major leagues.
