Casimir Schmidt (born 31 October 1995) is a Dutch artistic gymnast. He won the silver medal on the vault at the 2015 European Games. He is a four-time Dutch national all-around champion (2013, 2019, 2023-24). He represented the Netherlands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Schmidt was born on 31 October 1995 to parents Gerard and Loes. His older sister, Annabelle, competed in gymnastics and began teaching Casimir back flips in the backyard, leading to Casimir eventually competing in gymnastics too. [1] [2]
Schmidt won a gold medal on the vault at the 2012 Junior European Championships, and he also finished 14th in the all-around. [3] He began competing in senior international competitions in 2013 and won his first senior national all-around title. [4] That year, he also made his World Championships debut, [5] finishing 18th in the all-around final. [6]
Schmidt won a gold medal on the floor exercise at the 2014 Ljubljana World Challenge Cup and also won a bronze medal on the vault. [7] Then at the 2014 European Championships, he helped the Dutch team place sixth. [8] He tied with Finland's Tomi Tuuha for fourth place in the vault final. [9] He also competed at the 2014 World Championships but did not advance into any finals. [10]
Schmidt represented the Netherlands at the 2015 European Games alongside Frank Rijken and Bram Verhofstad, and they finished 15th in the team competition. Individually, Schmidt qualified for the all-around final and finished 13th. Then in the vault final, he won the silver medal behind Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev. [11] He then helped the Dutch team finish 11th in the qualification round of the 2015 World Championships, allowing them to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Test Event. [12]
Schmidt competed with the team at the 2016 Olympic Test Event that won the bronze medal, qualifying them as a full team for the 2016 Summer Olympics. [13] However, Schmidt was not ultimately selected to compete at the Olympic Games. [14] At the 2017 European Championships, he finished 11th in the all-around final. [15] He then won a bronze medal on the vault at the 2017 Koper World Challenge Cup, behind Andrey Medvedev and Donnell Whittenburg. [16]
Schmidt competed at the 2018 European Championships and helped the Dutch team finish ninth in the qualification round, making them the first reserves for the team final. [17] Then at the 2018 World Championships, Schmidt and the Dutch team qualified for the team final, finishing eighth. [18] After the World Championships, he competed at the 2018 Cottbus World Cup and won a silver medal on the floor exercise behind Artem Dolgopyat. [19]
Schmidt finished 12th in the all-around final at the 2019 European Championships. [20] He competed with Sanna Veerman at the 2019 Swiss Cup Zürich, a mixed pairs competition, and they placed eighth. [21] At the 2021 European Championships, he finished 15th in the all-around during the qualification round and did not earn an individual berth for the Olympic Games. He then withdrew from the all-around final. [22]
Schmidt finished 12th in the all-around final at the 2022 World Championships. [23] He then competed at the 2022 Swiss Cup Zürich alongside Eythora Thordottir, and they placed sixth. [24] He finished seventh at the 2022 Arthur Gander Memorial. [25] He won a bronze medal on the horizontal bar at the 2023 Cairo World Cup. [26] He then finished 15th in the all-around final at the 2023 European Championships. [27] At the 2023 World Championships, Schmidt and the Dutch team placed 11th in the qualification round and earned a team berth for the 2024 Olympic Games. [28]
Schmidt won his fourth national all-around title at the 2024 Dutch Championships. [4] He was then selected to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics alongside Jermain Grünberg, Loran de Munck, Frank Rijken, and Martijn de Veer. [29] The team finished 10th in the qualification round, making them the second reserves for the team final. [30] Individually, Schmidt qualified for the all-around final, where he finished 13th. Yernar Saparbekovich Yerimbetov is a Kazakhstani artistic gymnast. He is the 2006 Asian Games vault bronze medalist and the 2003 Summer Universiade vault and parallel bars champion and all-around silver medalist. He represented Kazakhstan at the 2004 Summer Olympics, finishing 14th in the all-around and eighth in the parallel bars final.
Robert Tvorogal is a Lithuanian artistic gymnast of Polish ethnicity. He is the 2019 European Games champion on the horizontal bar. He became the first Lithuanian to win a gold medal at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships when he won the horizontal bar title at the 2020 European Championships. He is also the 2022 European horizontal bar silver medalist and the 2020 European parallel bars bronze medalist. He represented Lithuania at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games.
Max Antony Whitlock is a retired English artistic gymnast. With fourteen medals and six titles in Olympic and World Championships, Whitlock is the most successful gymnast in British history. Giulia Steingruber is a Swiss retired artistic gymnast. She is the 2016 Olympic and 2017 World bronze medalist on vault. Additionally, she is the 2015 European all-around champion, a four-time European vault champion and the 2016 European floor exercise champion.
Igor (Ihor) Vitaliyovych Radivilov is a Ukrainian gymnast and four-time Olympian, having competed at the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games. Although he competes on all apparatuses, he is best known as a vault and rings specialist.
Oleg Yuriyovych Verniaiev is a Ukrainian artistic gymnast. He is the 2016 Olympic parallel bars champion and individual all-around silver medalist. Verniaiev is also the 2014 World parallel bars champion, the 2015 European individual all-around champion and the 2017 European individual all-around champion.
Eythora Elisabet Thorsdottir is a Dutch artistic gymnast. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics where she finished ninth in the individual all-around. At the 2017 European Championships, she won a silver medal on balance beam and a bronze medal on floor exercise. She is also the 2019 European floor exercise silver medalist and the 2023 European bronze medalist with the Dutch team.
Tisha Manouk Gijs Volleman is a Dutch artistic gymnast and a member of the national team. She won a bronze medal with the Dutch team at the 2018 European Championships. She represented the Netherlands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Pauline Sieglinde Schäfer-Betz or Pauline Schäfer is a German artistic gymnast who represented Germany at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Summer Olympics. She is the 2017 World Champion, the 2021 World silver medalist, and the 2015 World bronze medalist on the balance beam. She was part of the bronze medal-winning German team at the 2022 European Championships.
Frank Rijken is a Dutch artistic gymnast. He represented the Netherlands at the 2016 and 2024 Summer Olympics.
Andrei Vasile Muntean is a Romanian artistic gymnast. He represented Romania at the 2016 Summer Olympics and placed sixth on the parallel bars. He is the 2017 World University Games vault bronze medalist. He has competed at the World Championships eight times, and he will represent Romania at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Emma Maud Valborg Larsson is a Swedish former artistic gymnast. Larsson participated at the 2014 and 2015 World Championships and eventually qualified for 2016 Summer Olympics, where she placed 35th all-around in the qualifying stage of the competition.
Marios Georgiou is a Cypriot artistic gymnast. He is the 2024 European all-around champion, and the 2022 European horizontal bar champion and the first gymnast from Cyprus to win a European title, and a major all-around title. He is the 2019 European Championships all-around bronze medalist which made him the first gymnast from Cyprus to win a European medal. He is the 2019 European Games parallel bars silver medalist. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medals in the floor exercise and parallel bars and the bronze medal in the all-around, and he won four bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Maellyse Brassart is a Belgian artistic gymnast. She represented Belgium at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics. She has competed at five World Championships.
Samir Aït Saïd is a French artistic gymnast. He is the 2019 World bronze medalist and the 2013 European champion on the still rings. He is also a three-time European silver medalist and a two-time European bronze medalist. He represented France at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 2020 Summer Olympics, and the 2024 Summer Olympics. He was one of France's flagbearers at the 2020 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
Nazar Vyacheslavovich Chepurnyi is a Ukrainian artistic gymnast. He represented Ukraine at the 2024 Summer Olympics. He was part of the gold medal winning team at the 2024 European Championships and the silver medal winning team at the 2019 Junior World Championships. Individually on vault he is the 201 World University Games champion, 2018 Youth Olympic silver medalist, and the 2023 World and 2024 European bronze medalist. Additionally he is the 2019 Junior World champion on horizontal bar.
Audrys Nin Reyes is a Dominican artistic gymnast. He is the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games vault champion. He was the first Dominican gymnast to win a gold medal at the Pan American Games. He was also the first Dominican gymnast to win a gold medal at an FIG World Cup event when he won the vault title at the 2017 Osijek World Challenge Cup. He is the 2017 Pan American vault and horizontal bar champion and the 2017 Universiade vault champion. He is also the 2018 and 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games vault champion. He has qualified to represent the Dominican Republic at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the first male gymnast from his country to do so.
Loran de Munck is a Dutch artistic gymnast. At the 2022 European Championships, he became the first Dutch gymnast to win a European medal on the pommel horse. He is also the 2024 European pommel horse silver medalist and a 2024 Olympic finalist on the same apparatus.
Martijn de Veer is a Dutch artistic gymnast. He will represent the Netherlands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Jermain Grünberg is a Dutch artistic gymnast. He represented the Netherlands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
