The Castel-Mauboussin CM Jalon or Fouga Jalon two seat glider was designed in France towards the end of World War II for aerodynamic research, providing enough lift and space for measuring instruments and an operator. Two were built.
The Jalon was designed and built specifically to the requirements of the Groupement Français pour le Developpement des Researches Aéronautiques (G.R.A), who wanted a glider carrying an observer and electronic equipment for in-flight aerodynamic measurements. To this end, the Jalon could carry some 50 kg (110 lb) of instrumentation. It was a wooden aircraft with a mid set cantilever wing built around a single spar and covered with plywood skin. The wing had a central, constant chord section and tapered panels beyond half span, with rounded wing tips. [1]
The fuselage was a wooden monocoque of oval cross-section which tapered constantly to the tail from a rather bulbous nose. The tandem cockpits were covered by a long, continuously glazed, multi-framed canopy without a windscreen step or other break in the smooth upper fuselage line. The observer's section, split into two by the wing spar, was unusually long to accommodate his instruments; he also had a pair of circular windows on each side, looking out under the wing root. The Jalon's tailplane was mounted a little above the fuselage on a shallow dorsal step, positioned ahead of the narrow chord fin. Both elevators and the generous, deep rudder were horn balanced; the rudder also carried a trim tab. There was a nose skid and monowheel undercarriage, the wheel semi-recessed at the end of the skid. Two Jalons were built. The first was acquired by the Germans as they retreated from France in November 1944 and it is not certain if it flew, before or after transport to Germany. The second made its first flight on 22 September 1945. It was initially based at Toulouse, moving in May 1947 to the Office National d'Études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) at Brétigny-sur-Orge and making measurements with a variety of external probes attached until at least 1953. Performance
The Göppingen Gö 4 or Goevier is a German sailplane of the late 1930s used for training pilots. Its most notable features include side-by-side seating and dual controls, making the plane ideal for use as a trainer. It boasted average performance, compared to other gliders of the day, and was advertised as making the process of learning to fly sailplanes easier.
The Czerwiński-Shenstone Harbinger, aka the Shenstone-Czerwiński Harbinger or the Shenstone Harbinger was a Canadian high performance tandem seat sailplane designed in Canada. Only two were built, one in the UK and one in Canada. The latter did not fly until 1975, being under construction for 26 years; the former remained active until at least 1994.
The Stedman TS-1 City of Leeds was a parasol wing wooden sailplane, seating two in tandem open cockpits. Only one was built, by its designer in 1934; it remained active until the outbreak of World War II.
The Akaflieg Darmstadt D-34 sailplanes were a series of experimental single seat sailplanes, designed at the University of Darmstadt in the 1950s and early 1960s to explore the structural and aerodynamic advantages of the then emerging plastics and composite materials.
The Siebert Sie-3 is a single-seat Standard class glider designed and produced in Germany in the 1960s for club use.
The Maeda 703 was one of the first indigenous Japanese gliders, a high performance single seat aircraft which first flew in 1940. Three were built, two with gull wing wings; one of these set a national endurance record in 1941.
The Lommatzsch Lom-61 Favorit is a single seat, high performance glider designed and built in the German Democratic Republic in the early 1960s. A small number were used by clubs.
The CVV 8 Bonaventura was a two-seat competition glider designed and built in Italy during the 1950s. Fifteen were produced.
The Schleicher Rhönbussard, otherwise known as the DFS Rhönbussard was intended as an intermediate glider trainer which could also fly competitively. It was designed by Hans Jacobs in Germany in the early 1930s. More than 200 were built.
The IIL IS-4 was a single seat, high performance sailplane designed by Iosif Șilimon and built in Romania in the late 1950s.
The IIL IS-7 was a two-seat, sailplane designed by Iosif Șilimon and built in Romania in the late 1950s. Only one prototype was built.
The IIL IS-8 was a two-seat sailplane designed by Iosif Șilimon and built in Romania in 1960. They served with Romanian gliding clubs.
The IIL IS-10 was a high-performance, single-seat glider, designed and built in Romania in the early 1960s. It was the first Romanian aircraft to use laminar flow airfoils.
The IIL IS-11 was an aerobatic, single seat glider, designed and built in Romania in 1959. It was built in small numbers.
The Schneider ES-57 Kingfisher is a low-cost, short-span Australian glider capable of respectable cross country soaring flights. It was produced in small numbers in the late 1950s.
The Zlín Šohaj series of club gliders began as a post World War II development of the DFS Olympia Meise. A large number were built in the 1940s and '50s.
The Mauboussin M.112, M-12 or Mauboussin M.XII was originally called the Peyret-Mauboussin PM XII and was renamed when Mauboussin founded his own company in 1931, ending his partnership with Louis Peyret. It was a French, single-engine, two-seat, low cantilever wing touring monoplane. At least six were built.
The Rubik R-03 Szittya I was a Hungarian single-seat sailplane flown in the late 1930s. The design was developed through three improving variants. though only one of each was built.
The Jancsó-Szokolay M22 was a Hungarian single-seat sailplane first flown in 1937. Twenty were built and the type set several national records. Some remained in service up to about 1953.
The MSRz Bene was a Hungarian two seat primary glider, first flown in 1952. By this time its competitor had been awarded a serial production order, so only one Bene was completed.
