Castelo (English: Castle ) is a former parish ( freguesia ) in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the oldest parishes of Lisbon dated from 1147. At the administrative reorganization of Lisbon on 8 December 2012 it became part of the parish Santa Maria Maior. [1]

The Alfama is the oldest neighborhood of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river. Its name comes from the Arabic al-ḥamma (الحَمّة), meaning "hot fountains" or "baths," akin to "hammam" (حَمَّام). The castle was part of the defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar, and a stronghold used during the Portuguese Reconquista.

It was at this site that the Concession of Evoramonte on was signed on 26 May 1834, that ended Liberal Wars between the Liberal forces of Queen Maria II of Portugal and Absolutist armies of Miguel of Portugal.
