Castle Story is a sandbox and real-time strategy game developed by Sauropod Studio. Funded through crowdfunding website Kickstarter in 2012, the game launched in September 2013 in early access, and was fully released in August 2017.

In Castle Story, the player is in control of workers called "Bricktrons" which can be directed to gather resources, build castles and fight enemies. [2] The aim is to build a castle that can withstand attacks from creatures and other players. [2] The game takes place on massive floating islands. [2]
Castle Story was the debut game developed by Sauropod Studio, an indie game developer based in Montreal, Canada. [3] The game was first announced in December 2011; around this time, Sauropod was a team of two people. [4] [5] Sauropod Studio was formally founded as a company on 24 April 2012 by François Alain (general director), Germain Couet (artistic director), and Benoît Alain (lead programmer and chief technical officer). [6] A crowdfunding campaign was launched through the website Kickstarter on 27 July 2012, seeking US$80,000. [7] This goal was reached and exceeded within five hours of the campaign's launch. [7] [8] The campaign concluded after one month, with a total of $700,000 pledged. [9] Sauropod credited Markus Persson, the creator of the game Minecraft who publicly approved of the game, with leading the Kickstarter campaign to the success it had. [10] Beta versions of the game were later shared with backers who had pledged $15 or more. Following onto the release of Castle Story, Sauropod began production on a second game, Mirador. [3] This game had a troubled development, frequently shuffling the designer position. [3] A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign seeking $60,000 did not manage to get funded halfway and Sauropod failed to find a publisher to finance the game. [3] Instead, the Canadian Media Fund invested $900,000. [3] As Mirador drew closer to release, it came to the studio's employees attention that the money the studio had would not suffice to keep it running until the end of 2019. [3] The game was eventually released on 26 July 2019 without prior early access availability. [3] The idea of using early access was considered but ultimately rejected as the studio did not plan to support the game greatly post-launch. [3] Sauropod's management assured its employees that the majority would move on to the studio's next project. [3] However, on 23 September 2019, it was reported that, due to the foregoing money mismanagement, Sauropod had laid off all of its 20 employees. Idol Minds, LLC is an American video game developer based in Westminster, Colorado. The studio was founded in April 1997 by Mark Lyons and Scott Atkins and developed games exclusively for PlayStation consoles until 2012. Subsequently, it shifted to mobile games among other things before rebranding as "Deck Nine" in May 2017 to develop narrative-driven games. Lyons serves as president and chief technology officer of the company.

Satellite Reign is a cyberpunk real-time tactics video game developed and published by 5 Lives Studios. The game was released for Windows, macOS, and Linux in August 2015. It is a spiritual successor to the Syndicate series, which co-founder and programmer Mike Diskett had worked on. The name of the game is derived from one of the weapons featured in Syndicate Wars called "Satellite Rain". It received positive reviews from critics.
Hiveswap is an episodic adventure game developed by What Pumpkin Games and overseen by Andrew Hussie and Cohen Edenfield. Based in the universe of Hussie's MS Paint Adventures webcomic Homestuck, it focuses on a girl who is accidentally transported to the planet of Alternia—home of the troll species seen in Homestuck.
Hand of Fate is an action role-playing roguelike deck-building game developed and published by Australian studio Defiant Development for Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, released via early access on 7 July 2014, and then in the full release on 17 February 2015. A PlayStation Vita version was announced but ultimately cancelled due to development issues.
Good Shepherd Entertainment is a Dutch video game publisher based in Amsterdam. The company was founded in 2011 and opened its equity crowdfunding platform in September 2012. Gambitious' publishing label was opened in 2014, offering publishing services. In August 2017, Gambitious Digital Entertainment was rebranded Good Shepherd Entertainment whereas they ceased their crowdfunding activities and fully transitioned into being a publisher. Having been a consultant to the company prior, Brian Grigsby now became the CEO of the company.
Fig was a crowdfunding platform for video games. It launched in August 2015. Unlike traditional crowdfunding approaches like Kickstarter, where individuals can back a project to receive rewards, Fig used a mixed model that includes individual backing and the opportunity for uncredited investors to invest as to obtain a share of future revenues for successful projects. At the end of 2017, four projects had begun generating returns, returning 245% to Fig investors.
Harebrained Schemes, LLC is an American video game developer based in Seattle, Washington. It was co-founded in 2011 by Jordan Weisman and Mitch Gitelman. Prior to founding Harebrained Schemes, Weisman and Gitelman worked together on the MechCommander and Crimson Skies franchises at FASA, another company founded by Weisman. As of mid-2015, the studio had under 60 employees. The studio was acquired by Paradox Interactive in June 2018. Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive parted ways on January 1, 2024.
Piko Interactive LLC is an American video game publisher based in San Antonio, Texas. Founded in early 2013 by Eli Galindo, the company focuses on physical re-releases of games from older video game consoles and digitally released ports to newer systems.
Fable Fortune was a free-to-play digital collectible card game set in the Fable universe. The game was released for Windows and Xbox One in February 2018, after an initial early access release. It was co-developed by Flaming Fowl Studios and Mediatonic. In late 2019, Flaming Fowl Studios announced their intent to cease work on further updates for the game, citing its lacklustre performance on the market. The support for the game was finally discontinued on 4 March 2020.
Sunless Skies is a role-playing video game developed by Failbetter Games. Partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign, the game entered early access in 2017 and released in January 2019, and has been described as a "Gothic horror roleplay game". Sunless Skies is a direct sequel to 2015's Sunless Sea and incorporates similar elements and setting.
Uboat is a submarine simulator video game, released by Deep Water Studio and being published by PlayWay S.A. The game is inspired by the game mechanics of Fallout Shelter, XCOM, and also the movie Das Boot. Like other submarine simulation games, such as the Silent Hunter series, the player is put in command of a German U-boat during World War II.
TerraTech is a construction sandbox game with action elements created and released by British developer Payload Studios on 10 August 2018 for Windows and Xbox One and four days later for PlayStation 4. A port to Nintendo Switch by Lab42 was released on 29 May 2019. The game focuses on interplanetary mining operations. Players build and operate vehicles, called Techs, and stationary bases to extract resources and fight rival prospectors.
Defiant Development Pty Ltd was an Australian independent video game developer based in Brisbane. It was formed in May 2010 by Morgan Jaffit and Dan Treble, veterans of Pandemic Studios, in the aftermath of the closures of several larger video game studios in the country. Defiant primarily developed mobile games until 2013, when it moved to larger projects with Hand of Fate. The game was released in 2015 following a successful Kickstarter campaign and an early access phase, and it was followed by a sequel, Hand of Fate 2, in 2017. Defiant avoided "crunch" and Jaffit was outspoken about his opposition to the practice, as well as his support for a trade union. In July 2019, the studio was wound down due to what Jaffit called a "risky" business model and failure to adapt to changing market conditions. The studio ceased game development, thereby cancelling The World in My Attic, and planned to further support its existing games.
Thunder Lotus Games is an independent video game development studio based in Montreal, Canada. Founded in 2014, the company is most known for developing Jotun (2015), Sundered (2017) and Spiritfarer (2020).
