Television in the United Kingdom started in 1936 as a public service which was free of advertising. Currently, the United Kingdom has a collection of free-to-air, free-to-view and subscription services over a variety of distribution media, through which there are over 480 channels for consumers as well as on-demand content. There are six main channel owners who are responsible for most material viewed. There are 27,000 hours of domestic content produced a year at a cost of £2.6 billion. Since 24 October 2012, all television broadcasts in the United Kingdom have been in a digital format, following the end of analogue transmissions in Northern Ireland. Digital content is delivered via terrestrial, satellite and cable, as well as over IP.
Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown individuals rather than professional actors. Reality television came to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global successes of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises. Reality television shows tend to be interspersed with "confessionals", short interview segments in which cast members reflect on or provide context for the events being depicted on-screen. Competition-based reality shows typically feature gradual elimination of participants, either by a panel of judges or by the viewership of the show.
Celebrity Big Brother is a British television reality game show based on the Dutch show Big Brother, created by producer John de Mol in 1997, which aired from 2001 to 2018. The show followed a number of celebrity contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. Each week, one of the housemates is evicted by a public vote, with the last housemate named the winner. The series takes its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
On 26 August 2016, the series was won by Stephen Bear with Ricky Norwood finishing as runner-up. [4] [5]

The eye is the same that was used in Big Brother 17 which was split, with black on one side and white on the other with shattered, coloured glass separating them down the middle, however the logo features a star in the middle to represent the celebrity series. [6] On 15 July 2016 a revamped eye was revealed. The revamped eye is the same as the former eye, but now split into a gold half and a white half. [7]
On 19 July 2016, a brief 4-second "eye flash" aired on Channel 5 with the series eye logo emblazoned on a suitcase. [8] On 21 July 2016, countdown adverts started airing with clues to the housemates identities, with the clues being "Beach bod", [9] "Glamour puss", [10] "National treasure", [11] and "Iconic model".
On 8 July 2016, it was confirmed that the spin-off show Bit on the Side would air an additional episode on Sunday nights on 5Star. [1] Hour-long midnight live feed also returned for the series. [12]
