Big Brother is the British version of the international reality television franchise Big Brother created by producer John de Mol in 1997. Originally broadcast between 2000 and 2018, the show followed a number of contestants, known as housemates, who are isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built house. Each week, one of the housemates is evicted by a public vote, with the last housemate remaining winning a cash prize. The series takes its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The series premiered on 18 July 2000 on Channel 4, and immediately became a ratings hit. The series also featured a 24-hour live feed, in which fans could view inside the house at any time. Big Brother aired for eleven series on Channel 4, followed by one final special edition, Ultimate Big Brother, which ended on 10 September 2010. Following this, Channel 5 acquired the rights to the series, and it was officially relaunched on 18 August 2011. In 2014, Emma Willis announced that the show would be back for a sixteenth series in 2015. It was announced on 19 March 2015 that the show would remain on air until at least 2018.
Big Brother Panto is a special series of Big Brother that brought together ten housemates from previous Big Brothers to produce the pantomime Cinderella. It aired from 20 December 2004 to 5 January 2005 on the Channel 4 network.
Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack was a special series of Celebrity Big Brother, a spin-off series of the British reality television programme Big Brother. It was broadcast on E4 from 3–28 January 2008. A number of closely associated programmes also aired on the same channel. Dermot O'Leary – who had hosted Big Brother's Little Brother since 2001 – was the main host of Celebrity Hijack, and it was his final series of Big Brother.
The average age of the winners of Big Brother is 25 years old. 16 housemates from Big Brother have been housemates twice, in their own series and Big Brother Panto or Ultimate Big Brother . A total of 177 housemates have been evicted, 15 have been ejected, one left due to injury and 23 have walked from the Big Brother House. Only one housemate, Nikki Grahame, has been voted back into the house after being evicted. Nick Bateman and Victor Ebuwa are the only people to have been housemates in three series; Big Brother, Big Brother Panto and Ultimate Big Brother. Jade Goody had also been in three different series and is to date the only civilian housemate to have been a housemate in Celebrity Big Brother , as well as appearing in Big Brother and Big Brother Panto. Furthermore, Nikki Grahame has appeared in 4 series of the show in total, Big Brother 7, Ultimate Big Brother, Big Brother 16 and Big Brother Canada. In 2010, Big Brother 2 winner Brian Dowling was crowned Ultimate Champion over the first 11 series of Big Brother on Channel 4.
Ultimate Big Brother was the final series of the UK reality television programme Big Brother to air on Channel 4. It has now ended. The series was produced by Remarkable Pictures, a division of Endemol. It featured memorable housemates from previous series of Big Brother, and a smaller section of housemates from Celebrity Big Brother. A 24-hour live streaming service was also available via the Big Brother website as a fee-based service. The series ended with Brian Dowling winning the title of the "Ultimate Housemate" and the words "Big Brother will get back to you".
Nicola Rachel-Beth Grahame is an English television personality, writer, model, and fashion designer. Grahame rose to public prominence after appearing on Big Brother 7, and went on to star in her own reality television series, Princess Nikki. In 2006, she won a National Television Award for Most Popular TV Contender. In 2010, she finished as runner-up in Ultimate Big Brother. In 2016, Grahame appeared in the fourth season of Big Brother Canada. She finished in sixth place, being evicted on Day 63.
Nicholas Bateman, also known as "Nasty Nick", is a British media personality and a former contestant on the first series of the British version of Big Brother.
The best placed housemate of all time is Brian Belo, placing first out of a record 23 housemates in Big Brother 8. The worst placed housemate is Emily Parr, also of Big Brother 8, who came 23rd after being ejected from the house.
There have been 40 housemates born outside of the United Kingdom, originating from countries such as Ireland, Somalia, Morocco, Portugal, South Africa, Turkey, Poland, Zimbabwe, Italy, China, Canada, Nigeria, Greece, India, Uganda, Thailand, Egypt, Australia, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Brazil, Iran, Georgia, Singapore and the United States. Nadia Almada from Portugal, Brian Dowling from Ireland, Brian Belo from Nigeria and most recently Luke Anderson from South Africa have all become winners.

Big Brother is a Dutch reality competition television franchise created by John de Mol Jr., first broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999, and subsequently syndicated internationally. The show features contestants called "housemates" who live together in a specially-constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. Inspired by Big Brother from George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the housemates are continuously monitored during their stay in the house by live television cameras as well as personal audio microphones. Throughout the course of the competition, the housemates are voted out until only one remains and wins the cash prize.
Nádia Conceição Almada is a British television personality. She is known for winning the fifth series of Big Brother.
Big Brother 2001, also known as Big Brother 2, was the second series of the British reality television series Big Brother. The show followed eleven contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. Each week, one or more of the housemates were evicted by a public vote. The last remaining housemate, Brian Dowling, was declared the winner, winning a cash prize of £70,000.
Big Brother 2002, also known as Big Brother 3, was the third series of the British reality television series Big Brother. The show followed fourteen contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. Big Brother 2004, also known as Big Brother 5, was the fifth series of the British reality television series Big Brother. The show followed thirteen contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. Each week, one or more of the housemates were eliminated from the competition and left the House. The last remaining housemate, Nadia Almada, was declared the winner, winning a cash prize of £63,500.
Celebrity Big Brother is a British television reality game show based on the Dutch show Big Brother, created by producer John de Mol in 1997, which aired from 2001 to 2018. The show followed a number of celebrity contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. Each week, one of the housemates is evicted by a public vote, with the last housemate named the winner. The series takes its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Big Brother 2006, also known as Big Brother 7, was the seventh series of the British reality television series Big Brother. The show followed a total of twenty-two contestants, known as housemates, who were isolated from the outside world for an extended period of time in a custom built House. The last remaining housemate, Pete Bennett, was declared the winner, winning a cash prize of £100,000.
Celebrity Big Brother 2007, also known as Celebrity Big Brother 5, was the fifth series of the British reality television series Celebrity Big Brother. Big Brother 2012, also known as Big Brother 13, was the thirteenth series of the British reality television series Big Brother, and the second series to broadcast on Channel 5. The series premiered with a live launch on 5 June 2012 and ran for 70 days, concluding on 13 August 2012. The series was originally planned to run for thirteen weeks, but was cut back to ten weeks in order to accommodate Celebrity Big Brother 10. The series was won by Luke Anderson, who won half of the £100,000 prize fund, with the remainder taken by Conor McIntyre as part of the White Room twist. Anderson is the second transsexual contestant to win the show, the first being Nadia Almada who won the show back in 2004. The runner-up was Adam Kelly. The series was announced in April 2011 when Channel 5 signed a two-year contract to air the show. With Big Brother 12 having been broadcast in autumn 2011, this is the first series to air in the show's regular summer period on Channel 5 since it acquired the show from Channel 4 in 2011.
Big Brother 2015, also known as Big Brother 16 and Big Brother: Timebomb, was the sixteenth series of the British reality television series Big Brother, hosted by Emma Willis and narrated by Marcus Bentley. The series launched on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom and TV3 in the Republic of Ireland on 12 May 2015 and ended on 16 July 2015, a week earlier than planned. This was the earliest launch of a Big Brother series since the show's inception in 2000. It is the fifth regular series and the thirteenth series of Big Brother overall to air on Channel 5, and is the first regular series to air in May since Big Brother 8 in 2007. It is also the first series to air in Ireland since its move to Channel 5 in 2011. On 2 February 2015, it was revealed that Willis had stepped down as a host on the show's spin-off series Big Brother's Bit on the Side, though Rylan Clark will continue.
