Certify (foaled 12 March 2010) is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In her first season of racing, which began in July 2012 she won all four of her races including the Group One Fillies' Mile and ended the British season as one of the year's most highly rated two-year-old fillies. She was regarded as a leading contender for the following year's classics but was suspended from racing after failing a drug test in April 2013.

Background

Certify is a bay filly with a white blaze and two white feet. [1] She was bred in Kentucky by a partnership between Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud and Hurstland Farm, the breeders and part-owners of her dam, Please Sign In. Certify was sired by Elusive Quality, a stallion who has had success in both North America and Europe, siring major winners including Raven's Pass, Smarty Jones, Quality Road and Elusive Kate. [2] As a daughter of Please Sign In, Certify is a half-sister to the Oak Leaf Stakes winner Cry and Catch Me.

As a yearling, the filly was sent to the sales at Keeneland where she was sold for $80,000 [3] to the bloodstock agent John Ferguson. The deal saw Certify become the sole property of Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin organisation. She is now trained Charlie Appleby, who took over from Mahmood Al Zarooni, spending the winter in Dubai and the summer at Godolphin's Newmarket base.

Racing career

2012: two-year-old season

Certify began her racing career in a six furlong maiden race at Newmarket Racecourse in July. She was not expected to win, [4] and started at odds of 10/1 while the other Godolphin runner, Shuruq, was made favourite. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona, Certify took the lead inside the final furlong and drew away to win by three lengths from Pearl Sea, with Shuruq finishing third. [5] A month later, Certify was moved up in class and distance for the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes over seven furlongs at the same course and started 11/8 favourite against seven opponents. The filly broke slowly and fought against Barzalona's attempts to restrain her in the early stages. She took the lead approaching the final furlong and won by a lengths from Sky Lantern. [6] The form of the race was subsequently boosted when Sky Lantern won the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. [4]

At the St Leger meeting at Doncaster Racecourse in September, Certify started 4/6 favourite for the May Hill Stakes over one mile. Barzalona held up the filly in the early stages before challenging the leaders in the straight. Despite being carried out to the right as the leaders drifted out from the rail she stayed on strongly to take the lead in the closing stages to win by a head from the Prix du Calvados winner Purr Along. The first two finished seven lengths clear of the other runners in what the Racing Post described as "a thrilling duel". [7] On her final appearance of the season, Certify was moved up to Group One level for the Group One Shadwell Fillies' Mile, run for the second time at Newmarket after being moved from Ascot in 2011. She was made the 4/6 favourite, with her most serious rival expected to be Ollie Olga, a filly who had beaten Sky Lantern in the Prestige Stakes. Barzalona positioned the favourite towards the back of the six-runner field before moving forward in the last quarter of a mile. Certify took the lead and pulled clear to win by four and a half lengths, despite hanging to the left in the closing stages. [8]

In November, Certify was named European Champion two-year-old filly at the Cartier Racing Awards. [9] In the 2012 European Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, she was given a rating of 114, making her the highest-rated two-year-old filly of the season in Europe. [10]

2013: three-year-old season

On 9 April BHA officials made a visit to Al Zarooni's stables and carried out a series of random drug tests. Eleven horses, including Certify, produced samples which tested positive for anabolic steroids. The horses were suspended from racing pending an inquiry, meaning that Certify was ruled out of running in the 1000 Guineas. [11] After the BHA's disciplinary panel imposed an eight-year ban on Al Zarooni on 25 April, it was announced that Certify, and the other horses involved would be banned from racing until 9 October 2013. [12]

2014: four-year-old season

After a break of 489 days, during which Charlie Appleby took over the training of the horses formerly handled by Al Zarooni, Certify reappeared in the Group Two Cape Verdi over one mile at Meydan Racecourse on 30 January 2014. Ridden as in all her previous races by Barzalona she raced towards the rear of the field before taking the lead a furlong from the finish and won easily from L'Amour de Ma Vie, with Flotilla (winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches) in fourth place. [13] Three weeks later she started 2/5 favourite for the Group Two Balanchine over nine furlong at the same course but sustained her first defeat as she finished fourth of the six runners behind L'Amour de Ma Vie. On her first race back in Europe, Certify ran poorly, finishing twelfth of the fourteen runners in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Elusive Kate was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 2011 when her wins included the Prix du Calvados and the Prix Marcel Boussac. In 2012 she won the Prix Rothschild and was placed in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Jacques Le Marois, Sun Chariot Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. After being moved to the United Arab Emirates he recorded his most important success when he won the Dubai World Cup on 31 March 2012.

Moonshell was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 1995. In a racing career which lasted from October 1994 to May 1996, the filly ran five times and won two races. After winning her only race as a two-year-old, Moonshell joined the Godolphin Racing team and spent the winter in Dubai. In the spring of 2005, she returned to England to finish third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and then won the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. Moonshell did not run again as a three-year-old and was well beaten in two races in 1996 before being retired to stud.

Fallen For You is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After winning on her racecourse debut she finished second in the May Hill Stakes before finishing fifth in the Fillies' Mile. She began her three-year-old racing on synthetic tracks, winning a minor race at Kempton before returning to the turf to record her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was retired from racing at the end of the year.

Encke was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse, best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse on 15 September 2012 when he defeated the Triple Crown bid of Camelot. In spring of 2013 Encke was banned from racing after failing a drug test. He returned to racing in 2014 and was placed in three races including the Irish St. Leger. He sustained a fatal injury in training in October 2014.

In May 2013 she won the 200th running of the 1000 Guineas. She followed up with a win in the Coronation Stakes, and recovered from a controversial defeat by Elusive Kate in the Falmouth Stakes to record a fourth Group One win in the Sun Chariot Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to reproduce her best form, finishing unplaced in three races.

At the end of the year she was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and retired from racing to become a broodmare. Her name has always been rendered without an apostrophe, consistently with the street of that name alongside Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Aqaarid was an American-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who was the beaten favourite in two of the five British Classic Races. In a racing career which lasted from July 1994 until June 1995 she won three of her five starts. As a two-year-old she won a minor race on her debut and then stepped up in class to win the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. After winning a very strong renewal of the Fred Darling Stakes in the following spring she was beaten by Harayir when favoured to win the 1000 Guineas. A month later she started a short-priced favourite for The Oaks but finished sixth behind Moonshell.

Teggiano was an Irish-bred, British-trained thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1999 until July 2000 she won three of her six races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain when she won three races including the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. After a change of stable she made two appearances in the following year, producing the better of her efforts when finishing second in the Ribblesdale Stakes. She has had some success as a broodmare.

Hibaayeb is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2009, when trained by Clive Brittain, she was beaten in her first three races before winning the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year she entered the Godolphin stable and recorded further major victories in the Ribblesdale Stakes in England and the Yellow Ribbon Stakes in California. As a four-year-old she was based in the United States and won the Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Belmont Park.

White Moonstone is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July until October 2010 she was undefeated in four races of increasing importance. After winning a maiden race on her debut she won the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes, the Group Two May Hill Stakes and the Group One Fillies' Mile. She suffered training problems in the early part of the following year and was retired without racing again. She has produced at least one foal.

Lyric of Light is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain in 2011 when she was unbeaten in three races of increasing importance. After winning a minor race on her debut she won the Group Two May Hill Stakes and the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following spring she finished last when fancied for the 1000 Guineas after which she failed a drug test. She never raced again and was retired from racing.

Just The Judge was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won major races in both Europe and North America. She was unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old in 2012 including the Listed Washington Singer Stakes and the Group Two Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1000 Guineas and finishing third in the Coronation Stakes. As a four-year-old she produced her best form in North America where she won the E. P. Taylor Stakes as well as being placed in the Beverly D. Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. After being sold for a record price of 4.5 million guineas at the end of 2014 she was beaten on her only start as a five-year-old and was retired from racing to become a broodmare.
