Chandigarh Comets (CCO) was an Indian professional field hockey team based in Chandigarh that played in World Series Hockey. Pakistani striker Rehan Butt was the captain of the team and Harendra Singh was the coach. Sector 42 Stadium was the home ground of Chandigarh Comets. [1]

Chandigarh Comets were at the top of the table in the league phase but ended up as the semi-finalists of the inaugural edition of WSH. They lost to Pune Strykers in the semi-final 34 in the penalty shoot-out. [2] Gurjinder Singh was leading goal scorer for the team who also top-scored in the tournament along with Syed Imran Warsi with 19 goals apiece. [3]

History

2012 season

Comets played the inaugural match of the season against Bhopal Badshahs at their home ground where they faced a 43 defeat. [4] They continued with a 35 loss from Chennai Cheetahs. A 52 win over Mumbai Marines fetched them their first victory and first points for the season. [5] With an average start to the season they made a remarkable performance in the later stage. Chandigarh won almost all of their next 10 league matches, though they were held by Bhopal Badshahs 44, despite leading by 4 goals to none at one stage. [6] Their only defeat came against Sher-e-Punjab where they lost 52. A 43 win against Mumbai Marines in their penultimate league stage match got them through to the semi-finals. [7] They ended up as the table toppers after a 61 win over Karnataka Lions in their final match. [8]

They faced Pune Strykers in the semi-final at Mahindra Hockey Stadium in Mumbai. [9] Leading the match 41 at one stage, they seemed through to the finals before Strykers fought back. A last minute goal by Pune leveled the score 44. Misses by the skipper Rehan Butt and Canadian Sukhwinder Singh ended the penalty shoot-out with 32 in favour of Pune. [10]

Rehan Butt is a former Pakistani professional field hockey player who played as a forward for the Pakistan national field hockey team. A world renowned player known for his play-making skills and shooting in-front of the goal Rehan was named in the FIH All Stars Team in 2008 and 2010. In 2008 he was declared as the Best Asian Player by the Asian Hockey Federation. At international level Rehan represented Pakistan at three Olympics and two Hockey World Cups. World Series Hockey (WSH) was a professional league for field hockey competition in India. It was organised by Indian Hockey Federation with the objective to reinvigorate hockey in India. It was contested among eight franchise-based teams consisting of players from India and around the world. The entire event took place on home and away basis culminating into multi header playoffs. Australian Dennis Meredith, a member of the FIH panel of tournament directors, was the technical director of the WSH. It was sponsored by tyre manufacturers, Bridgestone, and therefore officially known as Bridgestone World Series Hockey.

2012 World Series Hockey better known as Bridgestone World Series Hockey, abbreviated as Bridgestone WSH, was the first season of the hockey tournament World Series Hockey, a professional league for field hockey in India. The tournament was to take place from 17 December 2011 to 22 January 2012 but later was postponed to 29 February 2012 owing to Olympic qualifiers. Eight teams took part in this competition. The opening ceremony and the first match was held at Sector 42 Stadium, Chandigarh, where Bhopal Badshahs beat Chandigarh Comets 4–3.
