Charles Kabugo is a senior consultant internal medicine physician in the Uganda Ministry of Health. He is the executive director of Kiruddu General Hospital, in Makindye Division, in the south of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. [1] He was appointed to that position on 9 August 2018. [2]

Background and education

He was born in the Buganda Region of Uganda. After attending local schools, he was admitted to Makerere University to study human medicine, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree. Later, Makerere University awarded him a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Internal Medicine. He also holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, from an undisclosed university. [3]

Career

Dr. Charles Kabugo is a decorated senior consultant physician, who was attached to Mulago National Referral Hospital, Uganda's top and largest tertiary referral hospital, with a 1790 bed capacity, which also serves as the teaching hospital of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. [4]

In May 2016, following the completion of the 200-bed Kiruddu General Hospital, Dr. Kabugo was selected as the interim director of the new facility. More than one hundred in-patients and fourteen out-patient clinics were temporarily transferred to Kiruddu, to make room for renovations to the Lower Mulago Hospital Complex between 2016 and 2019. The fourteen clinics involved included (1) hypertension (2) thyroid (3) diabetes (4) kidneys (5) heart problems (6) infectious diseases (7) skin diseases (8) lung diseases (9) brain diseases (10) burns (11) HIV/AIDS (12) liver diseases (13) rheumatology (joint diseases) and (14) hematology (blood diseases). In August 2018, Charles Kabugo, MBChB, MMed (Internal Medicine), MSc, was appointed executive director of Kiruddu General Hospital. He will be deputized by Dr. Robert Sentongo. [1] [2]

Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree.

Professor Charles Mark Lwanga Olweny, MBChB, MMed, MD, FRACP, is a Ugandan physician, oncologist, academic and medical researcher. Currently he is a professor of medicine and Immediate past vice-chancellor at Uganda Martyrs University, based at Nkozi, Mpigi District, in Central Uganda.

Kawempe General Hospital, also known as Kawempe Specialised National Referral Hospital, is a hospital in Uganda. It is an urban, specialised hospital built between 2014 and 2016 at an estimated cost of US$11.3 million. The hospital was constructed by the government of Uganda, with funding from the African Development Bank and the Nigeria Trust Fund.

Kiruddu General Hospital, also known as Kiruddu General Referral Hospital, is a hospital in Uganda. It is an urban, public, general hospital. It cost an estimated US$10.3 million plus about $350,000 in supervisory fees to build. The hospital was constructed by the government of Uganda, with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF). The hospital opened to the public on 16 May 2016.

Mulago Women's Referral Hospital, whose official name is Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital, is a component of Mulago National Referral Hospital, the largest hospital in Uganda, which serves as the teaching hospital of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Professor Charles Ibingira is a Ugandan surgeon, academic and medical administrator. He is the Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He was appointed to that position in November 2015, on a four-year renewable contract. He has previously served as the Dean of Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences, from 2010 until 2014.
