History

In 1999 there was $100,000 spent for a laboratory for biology classes. [6]

The school held its first racially integrated prom in April 2008, [7] which was the subject of the 2008 HBO documentary Prom Night in Mississippi . The documentary focused on the school and the efforts to have a mixed prom instead of segregated proms, with one for whites and the other for blacks.

In 2010, the graduation rate was 68.8%. [8] [9] The school district is considered to be "at risk of failing" by the No Child Left Behind standards. [10]

Prom Night in Mississippi is a 2009 Canadian-American documentary film written and directed by Paul Saltzman. The documentary follows a group of 2008 Charleston High School high school seniors in Charleston, Mississippi as they prepare for their senior prom, the first racially integrated prom in Charleston history.

A segregated prom refers to the practice of United States high schools, generally located in the Deep South, of holding racially segregated proms for white and black students. The practice spread after these schools were integrated, and persists in a few rural places to the present day. The separate proms have been the subject of frequent press coverage, and several films.

Tippo is an unincorporated community located in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, United States, located approximately 10 miles (16 km) from Swan Lake; 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Glendora; and approximately 14 miles (23 km) from Charleston. Tippo is located at the intersection of Tippo and Sharkey roads.

Strider Academy was a PK-12 school in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, United States, which operated from 1971 until 2018. The school was established in 1971 as a segregation academy to allow white parents to avoid sending their children to racially integrated public schools. The school was sited on Mississippi Highway 32, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Charleston and about 8 miles (13 km) north of Tippo. The school ceased operations at the end of the 2017–18 school year.

West Tallahatchie High School (WTHS) is a public high school in unincorporated Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, near Webb. A part of the West Tallahatchie School District, its nickname is "West Tally".

R. H. Bearden Elementary School is a public elementary school in unincorporated Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, near Sumner. It is a part of the West Tallahatchie School District.
