Abderrahmane Hammad Zaheer is the Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports and a former track and field athlete who competed in the high jump. He represented his country at the Summer Olympics in 2000, taking the bronze medal and made a second appearance at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His personal best of 2.34 m is the Algerian record for the event. He retired from the sport in 2010. In 2020, he became the President of the Algerian Olympic Committee. Hammad was appointed as minister on 16 March 2023.

The Arab Games are a regional multi-sport event held between nations from the Arab world. A men's football tournament has been held at every session of the Games since 1953, except for 2004. Since the 2023 edition, the tournament has been limited to under-23 teams, plus up to three overage players for each squad.

The Arab Games, formerly called the Pan-Arab Games, are a regional multi-sport event held between nations from the Arab world. They are organized by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees. The first Games took place in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt. Intended to be held every four years since, political turmoil as well as financial difficulties have made the event an unstable one. Women first competed in 1985.

The 1999 Arab Games were ninth edition of the multi-sport event between Arab countries and were held from August 15 to August 31. A total of around 4600 athletes from 21 countries participated in the 29 sports on offer. The opening ceremony that took place in Al Hussein Youth City Stadium was officially opened by King Abdullah II.

The Algeria women's national football team represents Algeria in international women's football. The team is currently ranked 76th in the world in the FIFA women's rankings. The team's highest ranking was 64th, in June 2009. The team plays its home games at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers and is coached by Radia Fertoul since August 2018. Algeria played its first match on May 14, 1998, against France, and lost 14–0.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2011 Arab Games</span> International multi-sport event

The 2011 Arab Games also known as the 12th Arab Games took place in Doha, Qatar from 6 to 23 December 2011. This was the first time that the country had hosted the multi-sport event. Khalifa International Stadium was the main venue for the competition.

Sport in Algeria dates back to antiquity. In the Aurès Mountains, people played games such as El Kherdba or El khergueba. Playing cards, checkers and chess games are part of Algerian culture. Horse racing (fantasia) and rifle shooting are among the recreational traditions of Algeria.

At the 2004 Pan Arab Games, the athletics events were held at the Stade 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers, Algeria from 4 to 8 October. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country topped the medal table having won a 16 gold medals and 34 medals overall. Second placed Morocco, with seven golds, had the greatest number of medals overall with a total of 35. Tunisia was third with sixteen medals in total, seven of which were gold. Eleven new Games records were set over the course of the five-day competition.

Chess at the 2010 Asian Games was held in Guangzhou Chess Institute, Guangzhou, China from November 13 to 26, 2010 with four individual and team events.

Boycotts of Israel in sports refer to various disqualifications and denial of Israeli athletes. As part of a more or less systematic boycott of Israel, Israeli athletes and teams have been barred from some competitions. In many international competitions, where Israel does take part, such as the Olympic Games, some Arab and Muslim competitors avoid competing against Israelis. Some countries, most notably Iran, even compel their athletes not to compete against Israelis or in Israel.

At the 2011 Pan Arab Games, the athletics events are currently being held at Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar from 15 to 20 December. A total of 45 events are to be contested, comprising 23 men's events and 22 for female athletes. The track and field events took place within the stadium while the half marathon was contested on a specially-designed course around the Aspire Zone. The shorter track events have a two-round format with qualifying heats and a final race, while the long-distance races and throwing events are contested in a straight final format with no qualifying rounds. In addition to the elite level programme, a total of 30 para-athletics events were contested between athletes with a disability on 21 and 22 December, comprising 25 men's events and five women's events.

Azzedine Lagab is an Algerian road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI Continental team Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers. During his career he won medals in Algerian national championships, in African and Arab cycling championships as well as at the All Africa Games and the Pan-Arab Games.

Mohamed Haddouche is an Algerian chess grandmaster.

Aimen Rizouk is an Algerian chess player born in Algiers. He was the first Algerian player to be awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) by FIDE in 2007.

The chess events at the 2003 All-Africa Games were held from 5 to 17 October at the Nicon Hilton Hotel in Abuja. This was the first time chess was contested at the All-Africa Games. The four events were men's and women's team competitions at rapid time controls, and men's and women's individual competitions at blitz time controls. Teams played matches on four boards: each team consisted of a minimum of four players and up to two optional reserve players. In the team competitions, medals were awarded to the teams scoring the highest number of board points, as well as to individual players with the best performances on each board in terms of win percentage.

The chess events at the 2007 Pan Arab Games were held from 13 to 21 November at the Olympic Centre in Maadi, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. Twelve men's teams and nine women's teams competed separately in tournaments conducted at classical time controls. Medals were awarded to the teams scoring the highest number of board points, as well as to individual players with the best performances by percentage score on each board with at least five games played. Medals were also awarded to the best overall performances on any board by percentage score. Bronze medals were awarded for both third and fourth-place individual performances.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Arab Games</span> International multi-sport event

The 2023 Arab Sports Games is the 13th edition of the Arab Games, an international multi-sport event which will take place in Algeria, between 5 and 15 July 2023. It will witness the participation of all the 22 Arab League members in 22 sports. For the first time, five cities will host the games: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba and Tipaza.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the karate events were held at La Coupole Arena in Algiers, Algeria from 13 to 14 July. A total of 14 events were contested.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the Boules events were held at the LOFA Sports Complex in Es Senia, Oran, Algeria, Qatar from 6 to 10 July. A total of 17 events were contested.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the table tennis events were held at Tipaza Multisports Hall in Tipaza, Algeria from 9 to 14 July. A total of 6 events were contested.
