The Chenouis or Chenoua are a Berber ethnic group native to the Chenoua Mountains in northern Algeria. They traditionally inhabit areas between the east of Ténès to the west of Cherchell. The Chenoui people number about 106,000. They speak the Shenwa language, a Northern Berber language that is closely related to the Shawiya language and Zenata varieties spoken by Berbers of the Aures mountains in Eastern Algeria and the Rif region. The Shenwa language has about 76,000 speakers.

The Arab Games are a regional multi-sport event held between nations from the Arab world. A men's football tournament has been held at every session of the Games since 1953, except for 2004. Since the 2023 edition, the tournament has been limited to under-23 teams, plus up to three overage players for each squad.

The Arab Games, formerly called the Pan-Arab Games, are a regional multi-sport event held between nations from the Arab world. They are organized by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees. The first Games took place in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt. Intended to be held every four years since, political turmoil as well as financial difficulties have made the event an unstable one. Women first competed in 1985.

The 10th Arab Games was an international multi-sport event which took place in Algiers, Algeria, between 24 September and 10 October 2004. It witnessed the participation of all Arab League members for the first time – 22 countries participated in 26 sports.

Tipasa, sometimes distinguished as Tipasa in Mauretania, was a colonia in the Roman province Mauretania Caesariensis, nowadays called Tipaza, and located in coastal central Algeria. Since 1982, it has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It was declared a World Heritage Site in danger in 2002, but was removed from the danger list in 2006 following conservation efforts.

The 9th All-Africa Games took place between 11 and 23 July 2007 in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. Algiers is the first city to hold All-Africa Games for a second time. The 1978 All-Africa Games were held there. Besides Algeria, only Nigeria has hosted the event twice, but with different host cities. 4793 athletes took part to these games.

Athletics is one of the sports at the quadrennial Arab Games competition. Athletics competitions have been held at every one of the eleven editions of the Pan Arab Games, which was inaugurated in 1953. Many of the region's top athletes have competed in the athletics at the Pan Arab Games, such as Saïd Aouita, Hassiba Boulmerka and Ghada Shouaa. Women's events were added to the programme at the 1985 Pan Arab Games and the 1984 Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel went on to win gold medals in four separate events.

Badminton has been part of the Arab Games since 1999 in Amman, Jordan. Syria tops the medal table, having won 15 gold medals, 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. Algeria won four golds and two silvers while Egypt won a gold, three silvers and six bronzes. Sudan won its first medal in badminton at the 2007 Pan Arab Games.

Basketball has been a Arab Games event since the first edition in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Algeria was a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have spread to Algeria in February 2020. In December it was announced that Algeria intended to launch COVID-19 vaccinations in January 2021.

Cycling at the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games was held in Konya, Turkey from 5 to 13 August 2022 in Konya Velodrome. The Road Cycling events of the competitions were held on various routes in Konya and the Track Cycling events were held at the Konya Velodrome.

The 2023 Arab Sports Games is the 13th edition of the Arab Games, an international multi-sport event which will take place in Algeria, between 5 and 15 July 2023. It will witness the participation of all the 22 Arab League members in 22 sports. For the first time, five cities will host the games: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba and Tipaza.

Algeria participated in the 13th Arab Games, which were held in Algeria in 5 cities from 5 to 15 July 2023. It competed with 454 athletes in 22 sports. Algeria has previously participated in 8 editions (1965, 1985, 1992, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2011), and is fourth in the overall standings before the start of this edition.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the table tennis events were held at Tipaza Multisports Hall in Tipaza, Algeria from 9 to 14 July. A total of 6 events were contested.
