The 2023 Arab Sports Games was the 13th edition of the Arab Games, an international multi-sport event which took place in Algeria, between 5 and 15 July 2023. The event included 22 sports with all 22 members of the Arab League participating. [1] [2] For the first time, five cities hosted the games: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba and Tipaza. [3]

Host selection

Algeria was chosen as the host on 14 March 2023 during a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. [4]

Five cities hosted the games, Algiers the capital, Oran the second city, Constantine, Annaba and Tipaza. [5]

Participation

The 22 countries constituting the members of the Arab League participate in the games, with 3800 athletes. [6]

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of the 15th Arab Games took place on July 5th, coinciding with the country's Independence Day. It began at 9 p.m. at the Stade du 5 Juillet with the national anthem "Kassaman", followed by the parade of delegations. The Prime Minister, on behalf of the President, kicked off the event, emphasizing Algeria's efforts to bring together the Arab world. An artistic performance showcasing Algerian culture followed, and then the sporting events commenced. Distinguished guests, including representatives from the Arab League, attended the event [9] .

Anthem

For the first time, the competition witnessed the creation of an official anthem dedicated to the event. [10]

The 9th All-Africa Games, also known as Algiers 2007, took place from 11 to 23 July 2007 in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. Algiers became the first city to hold All-Africa Games for a second time. The 1978 All-Africa Games were also held there. Besides Algeria, only Nigeria had hosted the event twice, but with different host cities. 4,793 athletes from 52 nations took part in the 2007 Games.

Miloud Hadefi Stadium, is a multi-use stadium in Belgaïd, in the Bir El Djir suburb of Oran, Algeria. Completed in 2019, it is used mostly for football matches. It can hold 40,143 spectators. The value of construction work of the stadium was about 142.3 million US$, it is an olympic stadium with the athletics track and it is a part of the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex which is the first big complex in Algeria exceeding the Mohamed Boudiaf Olympic Complex in Algiers and it is also the first stadium entirely covered in Algeria. The stadium expected to be special for the Algeria national football team with Stade du 5 Juillet and Nelson Mandela Stadium, and also clubs of Oran especially MC Oran.

Athletics is one of the sports at the quadrennial Arab Games competition. Athletics competitions have been held at every one of the eleven editions of the Pan Arab Games, which was inaugurated in 1953. Many of the region's top athletes have competed in the athletics at the Pan Arab Games, such as Saïd Aouita, Hassiba Boulmerka and Ghada Shouaa. Women's events were added to the programme at the 1985 Pan Arab Games and the 1984 Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel went on to win gold medals in four separate events.

Badminton has been part of the Arab Games since 1999 in Amman, Jordan. Syria tops the medal table, having won 15 gold medals, 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. Algeria won four golds and two silvers while Egypt won a gold, three silvers and six bronzes. Sudan won its first medal in badminton at the 2007 Pan Arab Games.

Basketball has been an Arab Games event since the first edition in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt.

Handball has been an Arab Games event since the third edition in 1961 in Casablanca, Morocco.

Volleyball has been an Arab Games event since the second edition in 1957 in Beirut, Lebanon.

Boxing is one of the sports at the quadrennial Arab Games competition. It has been one of the sports competed at the event since the inaugural edition in 1951.

The 2022 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XIX Mediterranean Games and commonly known as Oran 2022, was an international multi-sport event held from 25 June to 6 July 2022 in Oran, Algeria. Oran was announced as the host city at the ICMG General Assembly in Pescara, Italy, on 15 August 2015. 3,298 athletes took part in the games.

The men's football tournament at the 2023 Arab Games was held from 2 to 14 July 2023 in Algeria, following an 11-year hiatus. Matches will be played in Annaba and Constantine. For the first time, teams are restricted to under-23 players, and a maximum of three over-aged players.

Palestine participated in the 2023 Arab Games, which were held in Algeria from 5 to 15 July 2023. The country sent delegations to appear in 12 sports. Palestine has taken part in every edition since 1953, except for the 1957 edition in Beirut due to force majeure.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the weightlifting events were held at Bordj El Kiffan Multisports Hall in Bordj El Kiffan, Algiers, Algeria from 11 to 14 July. A total of 20 events were contested. Egypt was ranked first in the medal table.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the cycling events were held at Tipaza Urban Circuit in Tipaza, Algeria from 9 to 14 July. A total of 8 events were contested.

At the 2023 Arab Games, the Boules events were held at the LOFA Sports Complex in Es Senia, Oran, Algeria, Qatar from 6 to 10 July. A total of 17 events were contested.

Basketball 3x3 at the 2023 Arab Games took place in Ouagnouni Stadium in Algiers, Algeria from 12 to 14 July. In this tournament, 8 teams played in the men's competition, and 4 teams participated in the women's competition.
