Chicago Burlington & Quincy 710 is a preserved 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" type steam locomotive on display at the former Lincoln station in Lincoln, Nebraska. Built in 1901, No. 710 was built for high speed passenger service. After a rebuild in 1928, the locomotive provided branch line passenger and freight service until its retirement in 1954. [2]

History

CB&Q No. 710 was built in June 1901 originally as the Burlington & Missouri Railroad (B&MR) No. 31 at the Havelock shops in Havelock, Nebraska. The first run of the locomotive was on July 9, 1901 pulling a freight train. Soon, it was assigned to pull high speed passenger trains from Creston to Lincoln, but this lasted less than a year before it was reassigned to run from Lincoln to Ravenna. In October 1904, the B&MR was consolidated into the CB&Q, resulting in B&MR No. 31 becoming CB&Q No. 710. No. 710 underwent major repairs with a new cab and new couplers in 1906 and assigned to the Aurora (Illinois) Division. From 1914 to 1927, the locomotive served on the Brookfield and Hannibal Divisions in Missouri. In 1927 the locomotive was assigned to the La Crosse (Wisconsin) Division, where its service as a mainline locomotive came to an end. [2]

In 1928, major alterations such as reducing the size of the driving wheels took place. After the rebuild, the locomotive was put on the Wymore (Nebraska) Division, usually pulling passenger trains No. 89 and 90, which ran from Omaha to Concordia, KS via Lincoln. No. 710 would normally only pull these trains on the section from Wymore to Concordia. Trains 89 and 90 became mixed trains on November 26, 1932 with a short reintroduction as passenger only trains in 1936, which would be the last time No. 710 pulled a dedicated passenger train. The locomotive was renumbered to No. 910 in the summer of 1951 and continued hauling trains No. 89 and 90 until September 1953. No. 710 was retired in December 1954.

Following retirement, No. 710 was donated to the city of Lincoln in February 1955 and placed in Pioneers Park. It was the first locomotive donated by the CB&Q, and the first locomotive donated to a city in Nebraska. After a restoration in 1991, the locomotive was moved to the present site at the former Lincoln station. [2]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">EMD E5</span>

The EMD E5 is a 2,000-horsepower (1,500 kW), A1A-A1A passenger train-hauling diesel locomotive manufactured by Electro-Motive Corporation, and its corporate successor, General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of La Grange, Illinois, and produced exclusively for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and its subsidiaries, during 1940 and 1941. The E5 was distinguished from the otherwise very similar E3, E4 and E6 by being clad in polished stainless steel to match the Burlington's Zephyr trains. It also featured unique small grill-like ornamentation on both sides of the upper headlight. Like the other models in the E-series, the E5 had a sloping “slant nose” and it was equipped with two headlights — a regular stationary headlight above a gyrating Mars signal light. The E5 was the sixth in the EMD E-unit series.

<i>Nebraska Zephyr</i>

The Nebraska Zephyr was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad between Chicago, Illinois; Omaha, Nebraska; and Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1947 to 1971. Until 1968, the service was provided by two Twin Cities Zephyr articulated trainsets — the "Train of the Gods" and "Train of the Goddesses" — that became synonymous with it. The Nebraska Zephyr was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971. The "Train of the Goddesses" set is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois.

The Ak-Sar-Ben Zephyr was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) between Lincoln, Nebraska and Chicago, Illinois, United States. The first version operated from 1940 to 1947; a revived service operated from 1953 to 1970. The "Ak-Sar-Ben" portion of name was created by spelling Nebraska (Neb-ras-ka) backwards and taken from a fraternal organization of the same name. "Zephyr" was a name applied by the CB&Q to many of its trains, beginning with the Pioneer Zephyr in 1934. The name derived from "Zephyrus", the Greek god of the west wind.

The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad (B&MR) or sometimes (B&M) was an American railroad company incorporated in Iowa in 1852, with headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. It was developed to build a railroad across the state of Iowa and began operations in 1856. It was acquired by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1872, and kept serving as its subsidiary.

Galesburg is an Amtrak intercity train station in Galesburg, Illinois, United States. The station was originally built in 1984, after the razing of the large depot just south of the current site. It is located north of the large BNSF Classification yard. Just south the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg diverge via the Quincy main line which bypasses the yard on the east side. The California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief continue to the southwest side of Galesburg near Knox College.

Creston station is an Amtrak intercity train station in Creston, Iowa. The station is served by the Chicago–San Francisco Bay Area California Zephyr. Walter Theodore Krausch, known as W.T. Krausch (1868–1929), was an American architect, engineer, and inventor who worked for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) from the late 1880s to the 1920s.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Grand Canyon Railway 4960</span> Preserved American CB&Q O-1a class 2-8-2 locomotive

Grand Canyon Railway 4960 is a class "O-1a" 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1923 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Its primary use was freight service until 1957. It was spared from scrapping by the CB&Q, and was used in their steam excursion program alongside 4-8-4 class O-5b No. 5632, until the program was terminated in 1966. It was donated to the Circus World Museum, who then donated it to the Mid-Continent Railway Museum for static display. In the early 1980s, it was operated again by the Bristol and North Western Railroad before it was put into storage. As of 2023, it is owned by the Grand Canyon Railway, pulling passenger trains between Williams, Arizona and the Grand Canyon National Park alongside former Lake Superior and Ishpeming 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type No. 29.

The Chicago Burlington and Quincy O-5 was a class of 36 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1930 and the CB&Q between 1936 and 1940 and operated by the CB&Q until the late 1950s.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy No. 4000, also known as Aeolus, is a preserved S-4a class 4-6-4 "Hudson" steam locomotive that was originally built by Baldwin in 1930 as S-4 locomotive No. 3002. It was primarily used to pull fast passenger trains before it was rebuilt by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1937 to be re-classified as an S-4a with Streamlining, and it was renumbered 4000 in the process. The streamlining was removed during World War II, and the locomotive was later downgraded to secondary passenger and mail service. In 1956, No. 4000 pulled an excursion train between Galesburg and Aurora, Illinois for the Illinois Railroad Club before it was retired altogether. The locomotive was donated to the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1963, and it remains on static display in Copeland Park, as of 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chicago, Burlington and Quincy 5632</span> Scrapped CB&Q O-5b class 4-8-4 locomotive

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy 5632 was a O-5b class 4-8-4 “Northern” built in the CB&Q's shops in September 1940. It was used to pull mainline passenger and freight trains before it eventually became famous for pulling a plethora of excursion trains for the CB&Q’s steam excursion program. By the time the program ended in 1966, No. 5632 was disassembled for an unfinished overhaul, and was subsequently sold to locomotive caretaker Richard Jensen. The locomotive was stored inside a roundhouse waiting for restoration until 1969, when it was illegally moved to a scrapyard. The locomotive derailed on a switch in 1972, resulting in its scrapping and a subsequent lawsuit between the scrapyard and Jensen.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy 4963 is a preserved class "O-1a" 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotive originally built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. It was used by the CB&Q to haul mainline freight trains before it was leased to the Bevier and Southern Railroad to haul short-distance freight trains in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was subseqeuntly retained by the CB&Q and used as a source of spare parts before being acquired by Richard Jensen. It was planned for No. 4963 to be restored to run again before it was sold to a scrapyard in Chicago during legal disputes between Jensen and the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad. No. 4963 was later purchased by the Illinois Railway Museum in 1991, and as of 2023, the locomotive is on static display in Union, Illinois.

Beatrice station, otherwise known as the Burlington Northern Depot in Beatrice, Nebraska is a historic railroad station which served trains of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The Neo-Classical Revival station was constructed in 1906.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Grand Island station</span> Rail depot

Grand Island station, otherwise known as the Burlington Railroad Depot in Grand Island, Nebraska is a historic railroad station which served trains of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The Prairie style station was constructed in 1911. It was likely designed by Walter T. Krausch, who designed many CB&Q depots, however the documentation of the depot was lost in a 1922 fire.
