Chokt is an American industrial rock band featuring Pete Murray of Lo-Pro and Ultraspank, Walter Flakus of Stabbing Westward, and John Stevens of Ghost Machine and The Clay People. The trio recorded an album's worth of material together, releasing songs one by one over the course of 2006 to 2009. It served as an outlet for Murray for songs that didn't quite fit the hard rock sound of Lo-Pro, during the six year gap in between Lo-Pro releases.

History

Formation (2002-2004)

Pete Murray released two albums as the frontman of nu metal band Ultraspank, and when the band broke up, he eventually formed the hard rock band Lo-Pro with guitarist Neil Godfrey. [1] They released one self-titled album in 2003. However, after touring in support of the album, they were dropped from the Geffen record label. [2] The band went through a six-year period before releasing music as a band again, with the band spending searching for a new label while continually writing new material and reworking unsatisfactory material. [3] During this time, Murray worked with Ivan Moody, who afterward formed Five Finger Death Punch, and Jon Stevens, past guitarist of The Clay People, in their band Ghost Machine. Murray produced their albums Ghost Machine and Hypersensitive . [4] [5] After the sessions, Murray and Stevens continued to work together outside of Ghost Machine, eventually deciding to form a new band, called Chokt, with Walter Flakus of Stabbing Westward. [6]

Chokt releases (2005-2009)

The band began recording material in 2005. The band opted to pursue an industrial rock sound, reminiscent of Flakus's work in Stabbing Westward and Steven's work in The Clay People. Murray used the band as an outlet for the music that wasn't fitting the traditional hard rock sound he aimed for with Lo-Pro. [3] Murray performed vocals, while the other two both contributed "guitar, bass, and programming", while using a drum machine for the drum work. [6] Members were never actually in the same room together when working on music, but rather, they used Pro-Tools and emailed each other parts back and forth. [3] The band started streaming songs in 2006, and continued to stream a few per year up through 2009. Most debuted on the band's Myspace, but occasionally from Murray's Myspace as well. [7] Chokt ceased releasing tracks after the 2009 track "Only You", which was released just before Murray became active with Lo-Pro again, with them releasing the Letting Go EP in October 2009 and The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge on June 8, 2010. In an interview for Lo-Pro, Pete Murray announced his intentions to gain more exposure for Chokt, stating that the band "won't be secret for long". [3]

After attracting the attention of Aaron Lewis of Staind, the band signed to a major record label, Geffen Records, and released their debut album, Lo-Pro in 2003. After a year of touring in support of the album, they would be dropped from their label. The band stayed together, but it would be almost six years until any further music releases, with the band opting to record and re-record several album's worth of material, participate in side-projects, and perform live shows prior to finalizing new material for release.

Ultraspank was an American metal band from Santa Barbara, California. They released two albums, a self-titled album in 1998, and a follow-up, Progress, in 2000. The band disbanded shortly after the release of Progress in 2001 due to being dropped by their label due to poor sales of both albums.

<i>Stabbing Westward</i> (album) 2001 studio album by Stabbing Westward

Stabbing Westward is the fourth studio album by the American industrial rock band Stabbing Westward. It is their first album to be produced by Ed Buller and released on Koch Records. The album was released on May 22, 2001. The album shows a change in direction for the band. The album's songs are much less heavy and aggressive, while the industrial focus has given way to a more melodic sound. Before the album was released, lead singer Christopher Hall said in an interview that Stabbing Westward wrote great pop-rock songs, but the band had always ended up making them ugly by adding effects and screaming, etc. On this album, he claimed, they decided to write what they wanted, regardless of fan expectation. "The Only Thing" is a love song for Christopher Hall's wife.

Ghost Machine was an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, active in the mid-2000s. It featured two members from Motograter, vocalist Ivan Moody and drummer Chris "Crispy" Binns, as well as John Stevens of The Clay People.

The Dreaming was an American rock band founded in the Hollywood area by Christopher Hall, the lead singer of the band Stabbing Westward, and Johnny Haro in 2001.

Ungod is the debut album by American industrial rock band Stabbing Westward. The album was recorded in six weeks in Chiswick, England in 1993, and released by Columbia Records on February 15, 1994. With adequate album sales and touring with the likes of Depeche Mode, a second album, Wither Blister Burn & Peel, was released in 1996. The guitar line in the chorus of the song "Ungod" was later used in Filter's song "Hey Man Nice Shot" in 1995. Stuart Zechman, who was also playing guitar for Filter at the time, took the riff and showed it to Stabbing Westward who ended up using it as well.

<i>Letting Go</i> (EP) 2009 EP by Lo-Pro

Letting Go is the EP of Lo-Pro, initially available only during concerts in July and August during the "Stimulate This" Tour with Staind, Shinedown, Chevelle and Halestorm. It was reported to be released digitally in September 2009, but was eventually pushed back to October 21, 2009. This is their first formal release of music in six years, since their self-titled album in 2003. In the past, Lo-Pro has claimed to be working on "over 26 songs" for a future release. Despite this, five of the six tracks on it were later put on their full-length album The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge, to be released on June 8, 2010.

The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge is the second full-album by Lo-Pro, originally scheduled to be released was May 25, 2010, but was delayed to June 8, 2010, in order to add more songs to it. The album is described by leader singer and songwriter Pete Murray as "a diary of the Lo-Pro experience" over the course of the seven years it took to make the album. The album's only single was "Alive".

Their debut EP, produced by Ben Grosse, Until We Meet Again, was released on March 11, 2014. After a series of delays, their debut full-length album, Condition Critical, is scheduled for release on November 1, 2019. The first single, "Something", was released on August 1, 2017.
