Chomp Chomp Food Centre is a hawker centre located in Serangoon Gardens, Singapore. [1] Opened in 1972, Chomp Chomp remains as one of Singapore's most popular hawker centres, featuring 36 hawkers selling a wide variety of dishes. [2]
In December 1970, Member of Parliament for Serangoon Gardens and Parliament Secretary for Home Affairs Leonard Peter Rodrigo started the project to construct an open air hawker centre at Kensington Park Road, alongside three other projects for his constituency. [1]
The name Chomp Chomp was chosen among the unlicenced street hawkers that used to sell at the nearby Serangoon Garden Circus. [3] Chomp Chomp is a loose adaption of its Teochew name 忠忠, anglicised as Tiong Tiong. The characters stand for loyalty and righteousness. [3]
On 4 May 1972, in preparation for the official opening, students from Serangoon Garden Secondary School assisted to put up the Chomp Chomp signboard and worked on the landscaping. [1] [4]
On 7 May 1972, Chomp Chomp was officially opened by Minister for Law and National Development Edmund W. Barker. [5] Costing S$ 95,000, the hawker centre housed 36 hawkers. [1] [3] [6]
In February 1984, the plan to implement paid parking was announced by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), as residents were unhappy that motorists parked indiscriminately when dining at the hawker centre. [7] However, hawkers from the hawker centre and shopkeepers in the area urged URA to reconsider the plan as they foresaw lesser business if paid parking was implemented. In response, Minister for Foreign Affairs Suppiah Dhanabalan felt that paid parking would instead increase turnover at their stalls and shops, as customers would finish their business before their parking coupon expires, but the stall owners had every right to complain if they experienced a loss of business. [8] As such, starting from 1 March 1984, paid parking was implemented at the hawker centre. [7]
However, due to its close proximity to the hawker centre, more patrons began parking on both sides of Walmer Drive as parking there was free. This resulted in the entrance of road to be often blocked, causing inconvenience to the residents. [9] On 16 April 1984, to prevent drivers from parking along Walmer Drive, the Public Works Department announced that a double yellow line will be drawn on one side of the road. [10]
In February 1987, the Ministry of Environment launched a pilot project for hawkers to use disposable polystyrene crockery, plastic cutlery and wooden chopsticks, citing hygiene concerns with existing melamine ware. Chomp Chomp, along with hawker centres at Cuppage, Newton, Whitley and Adam Road, were the ones chosen for the project. [11] Some hawkers interviewed by The Straits Times felt that they had no choice but to abide by the Ministry's wishes. The hawkers also said that there was a 20% to 50% drop in business, and 30% to 50% increase in the cost of disposables. [12] In a quick survey conducted by The Sunday Times, 12 out of 15 patrons said they preferred proper crockery and cutlery. [13] However, in a survey conducted by the Ministry in early 1988, most respondents rated disposable crockery as a "good/very good idea". [14]
Nevertheless, in 1989, Minister for Environment Ahmad Mattar announced that using disposable crockery would not be compulsory, citing complains from hawkers and patrons. [15] As such, almost all the hawkers at Chomp Chomp switched back to using proper crockery and cutlery. [16]
In 1994, the Ministry of Environment launched a stall ownership scheme, enabling hawkers to purchase a 20-year lease, allowing them to sell, transfer, or sublet their stalls during the lease period. [17] Costing between S$ 124,000 and S$ 138,000, all the hawkers from Chomp Chomp bought their stalls in 1996, making them the first hawker centre to do so under the scheme. [18] [19] [20]
Being an open air hawker centre, business is affected during rainy and scorching hot days. As such, building a roof was the main concern for hawkers, after they purchased their stalls. [3] On 1 October 1996, Minister for Environment Teo Chee Hean said that his ministry was looking into their concern, and reassured Member of Parliament for Thomson GRC (Serangoon Gardens) Lau Teik Soon that hawkers will be consulted if the roof were to be built. [21] In 1998, at a total cost of S$ 350,000, a new roof was constructed, along with replacement of plumbing pipes and a change of floor tiles. However, hawkers complained that the new roof was too low, causing trapped heat and rain to splash into the hawker centre. [22] In September 2003, Chomp Chomp was closed for six month, and at a total cost of S$ 6 million, the old roof was replaced. [23] [24] [25]
Chomp Chomp is one of the most popular hawker centres, and it is known for hokkien mee and barbecued seafood. [2] [26] [27] [28]
In July 2018, Chomp Chomp made the headlines after it received a bid of S$ 10,028 from a woman who wanted to run a drinks stall. However, on 21 August 2018, the woman decided to end the tenancy agreement on the same day she signed it. The National Environment Agency added that the bid was the highest successful bid received, and that it was an outlier. [29]

Newton Food Centre (纽顿熟食中心) is a major hawker centre in Newton, Singapore. The food centre was promoted by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) as a tourist attraction for sampling Singaporean cuisine. It was first opened in 1971 and it closed down in 2005 as the government wanted to revamp the food centre. The food centre then went through a major renovation before reopening on 1 July 2006.
Jumbo Seafood is a Singaporean restaurant chain specialising in the seafood aspects of Singaporean cuisine and dishes, such as Chili crab. First opened in 1987 with an outlet at the East Coast Seafood Centre modeling and taking design elements similar to the non affiliated JUMBO Floating Restaurant Hong Kong, Jumbo Kingdom. It became a hit, it then opened an additional five outlets throughout the country including in the suburban areas of Serangoon Gardens as well as the Singapore Indoor Stadium. As of 2022, it has 5 outlets in Singapore.
Balestier is a sub zone located in the planning area of Novena in the Central Region of Singapore. The main road, Balestier Road, links Thomson Road to Serangoon Road and the road continues on as Lavender Street. The area is home to rows of shophouses, such as the Sim Kwong Ho shophouses, the Balestier Art Deco shophouses, 412-418 Balestier Road, and 601-639 Balestier Road, low-rise apartments and commercial buildings as well as a shopping mall known as Shaw Plaza. Balestier also has another mall, Zhongshan Mall. There are several lighting and electrical shops along Balestier Road, which is also home to the Ceylon Sports Club and the Indian Association. The area is known for its food such as bak kut teh and chicken rice. In the area, there are several apartments, condominiums, and budget hotels.
Sungei Road is a road in Singapore situated between Serangoon Road and Jalan Besar and runs along the Rochor Canal. The area around Sungei Road formerly housed affluent Europeans and Asians, and many ornately designed buildings were built there. Since the 1930s, the road has been synonymous with Sungei Road laksa and the Thieves' Market, the largest and oldest flea market in Singapore, where locals can shop for old bric-a-brac or second-hand goods. The market was permanently closed on 10 July 2017 for "future residential development use".
The Satay Club was the name of three open-air hawker centres in Singapore, all of which are no longer operating as of 2005. The first Satay Club was located at Hoi How Road, near Beach Road; the second and third were located at the Esplanade (1970–1995) and Clarke Quay (1995–2005) respectively. Food sold at the Satay Club was predominantly satay. According to one source, Satay Club sold the "best satay in the region [of Southeast Asia]".
Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle is a street food stall in Outram, Singapore. It is owned and run by Chan Hon Meng. In 2016, the stall became one of the first two street food locations in the world to be awarded a star in the Michelin Guide, although it lost its star in 2021. It has since become internationally franchised under the English name Hawker Chan.
A Noodle Story is a street food stall in the Amoy Street Food Centre in Singapore. The food stall was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2017. A new outlet in the Guoco Tower was opened in 2021.
Armenian Street Char Kway Teow is a street food stall in Anchorvale Block 303 in Anchorvale, Singapore. The food stall was originally located at the corner of Armenian Street and Loke Yew Street, and later relocated along Anchorvale Link. Two more outlets were established in 2013 and 2014.
The Fishball Story is a street food stall along Circuit Road in Macpherson, Singapore. The food stall was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2016. However, the stall failed to qualify for the 2017 edition of the Michelin Bib Gourmand.
