Christopher Merrick Hughes (born 3 March 1954, [1] London, England), also known as Merrick, [2] is a British music producer, songwriter, and former drummer of Adam and the Ants. [3] Best known as producer of Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair , and as the co-writer of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", Hughes has a joint background as a musician, songwriter and producer. His career began with Adam and the Ants as drummer and producer of the "Cartrouble" and "Kings of the Wild Frontier" singles, then the Kings of the Wild Frontier album. Yielding three hit singles, the album earned Hughes Music Week 's 'Producer of the Year Award'. [4]

Life and career

Hughes was educated at Emanuel School in London, and was a member of Adam and the Ants, also producing their albums, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming . [5] Hughes was awarded Music Week ’s "Producer of the Year" award for his work on the album, Kings of the Wild Frontier. [5] He co-wrote Tears for Fears' hit song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", [5] and produced their first two albums, the platinum-selling The Hurting and the multi-platinum Songs from the Big Chair . [5] He began working with the band again on their third album, The Seeds of Love , but left the project due to creative differences. Hughes also produced the Electric Soft Parade's debut album, Holes in the Wall , which was nominated for the Mercury Prize, [5] and Propaganda's 1234 . [6] Hughes was also a member of Dalek I Love You and co-produced Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain".

In February 1994, Hughes released Shift, his first solo album, which was re-released in July 2008. [5] Shift was a tribute to American minimalist composer, Steve Reich. In 1972, Hughes' father took him to London to see Reich's performance of Drumming . Hughes credits Reich as a driving influence in his career. [7] Shift uses fragments of Reich's work and "subjects it to subtle manipulations using the technology of recorded sound". [7]

At db records, [8] Hughes worked on the early development of Tom McRae [9] and the Electric Soft Parade, producing debut albums that were both nominated for a Mercury Music Prize.

Hughes has worked with many artists including: Adam and the Ants, Def Leppard, Tears for Fears, Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Ric Ocasek, Wang Chung, Tom McRae, the Electric Soft Parade, Propaganda, Howard Jones, Lloyd Cole, Jon Bon Jovi, Tori Amos, Enya (Eithne Ní Bhraonáin), Moya Brennan (Máire Ní Bhraonáin) the voice of Clannad, Crybaby, Stackridge, the Teardrop Explodes and Sam Brookes.

His album Eirenic Life was released on Helium Records on 14 July 2017.

1234 is the second studio album by Propaganda. Released in 1990, Michael Mertens was the only remaining member of the group from their previous album A Secret Wish, though original member Susanne Freytag made a guest appearance on two tracks, and the album includes some songs co-written by Ralf Dörper. New group members included Derek Forbes and Brian McGee, both formerly of Simple Minds and whom had both toured with the first incarnation of the band, and vocalist Betsi Miller. This Side of Paradise is the second solo studio album released by Ric Ocasek, lead singer and songwriter of the Cars. It was released in 1986 by Geffen Records. Though it was a solo album, other members of the Cars played significant roles. Greg Hawkes plays keyboards and bass throughout the album, and also co-wrote "Hello Darkness". Benjamin Orr is on backing vocals for three songs. Along with Hawkes and Orr, the track "True To You" also features Elliot Easton on guitar. Both production and drumming were by Chris Hughes. Hughes had been the recent producer of Tears for Fears most popular two albums. Steve Stevens from Billy Idol's band plays guitar on over half of the album.

Adam Ant is a British post-punk, new wave artist. He was the lead singer of Adam & the Ants until their split in early 1982, by which time they had recorded three studio albums. Ant, however, would go solo, and release an additional five studio albums throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. After a gap of nearly 18 years, his sixth released solo studio album came out in early 2013. A planned follow-up album recorded the following year currently officially remains at developmental stage.

Adam and the Ants were an English rock band that formed in London in 1977. The band existed in two versions, both of which were fronted by Adam Ant, between 1977 and 1982. The first phase began when the band were founded in May 1977 and were called The Ants until November of that year. They later changed their style from punk rock to post-punk and new wave, and released one album. The final line-up of this version consisted of Dave Barbarossa, Matthew Ashman, and Leigh Gorman—all of whom left the band in January 1980 at the suggestion of manager Malcolm McLaren to form Bow Wow Wow.

Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter, is the sixth solo studio album by Adam Ant. The album's title was announced by Ant in the NME in April 2010. As he had announced at his gig in Chatham in September 2012, the new album was released on 21 January 2013 by Ant's own record label, Blueblack Hussar Records. Despite the independent self-release, the album reached number 25 on the UK Albums Chart, only one place lower than its predecessor, Wonderful, released on the major EMI label nearly eighteen years earlier. It had previously been at number 8 in the midweek chart update.

John Beckett is an English musician, actor and record producer. He is best known for being a former guitarist of Adam and the Ants under the name Johnny Bivouac, during which time he recorded the track "Deutscher Girls" with the band, later a UK Top 15 hit single. As an actor, he is best known for the role of Strings in the police sitcom Operation Good Guys.
