The Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic [lower-alpha 1] was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR within the Soviet Union.

It occupied about 18,000 square kilometres (6,900 square miles) along the east bank of the Volga River, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) west of the river's confluence with the Kama River and some 700 kilometres (430 miles) east of Moscow.[ citation needed ]

The successor of the Chuvash Autonomous Oblast, the Chuvash ASSR was formed in 1925. [1] It declared its sovereignty within the Soviet Union in 1990 as the Chuvash Republic (still within Russia).[ citation needed ]

Its primary economic activities were agricultural. [1] Grain and fruit production and logging are emphasized.[ citation needed ] The capital city was Cheboksary. [1]

When the Soviet Union existed, different governments had ruled the southern Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Ingushetia. Within the Mountain Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic, later annexed into the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, they were known as the Chechen Autonomous Oblast and the Ingush Autonomous Oblast, which were unified on January 15, 1934, to form the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Oblast. It is located in the east of the republic and borders with the Republic of Tatarstan in the south and east, Kanashsky District in the west, and with Urmarsky District in the north. The area of the district is 524.4 square kilometers (202.5 sq mi). Its administrative center is the rural locality of Yantikovo. Russians formed the largest ethnic group. The capital of the Russian SFSR and the USSR as a whole was Moscow and the other major urban centers included Leningrad, Stalingrad, Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk, Gorky and Kuybyshev. It was the first socialist state in history.
