Climats, terroirs of Burgundy is a cultural landscape and a series of sites that exemplify the viticulture practices of the Burgundy wine region. The climats are small, precisely delimited land parcels that differ from each other in microclimate, geography, soil, and grape type. The Burgundy climats are the birthplace of the terroir system of French wine, where each geographical region has its own unique wine. [1] The region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 because of its historic significance and its importance in the production and development of wine. [1]

Description and History

The world heritage site consists of two parts: The first is the historic center of Dijon, where the precisely parceled climats have been defined and regulated since the Middle Ages. The second part of the site encompasses the vineyards and wine production sites near the town of Beaune and the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune regions south of Dijon. The region is dominated by clay-limestone soils, but the extreme variance in soil composition, microclimate, and geography has led to a wide diversity of wines. [1] In total, roughly 1247 different Climats exist, each with their own particular definition and certification by the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) . Many of the boundaries of these parcels (marked by paths, stone walls, or fences) were built in 1938 and are still visible today. [1]

In the 5th and 6th centuries, with the spread of Christianity to the region, vineyards were established on the slopes of the Côtes. The development of Cistercian order in the 11th century and the ownership of vineyards by members of the bourgeoisie in the 12th and 13th centuries contributed to the highly parceled nature of the landscape. [2] In the 16th century, the concept of the climats was developed, with each parcel boasting its own wine. This system developed into the AOC and the current concept of describing wines from the precise location they were produced at. [2]

Corton (wine)

Corton is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red and white wine in Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. It is located on a hill shared between the three villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The appellation covers the lower parts of the Corton hill and includes several subordinate vineyard names, or climats, within the AOC. Because of the size of the AOC and the variability of these climats, it is the rule rather than the exception that the name of the climat is indicated together with that of the Corton AOC, leading to designations such as Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Les Bressandes. Corton is rare in this aspect, as the 'climat' is seldom used for other Grand Cru appellations in Côte d'Or. The AOC was created in 1937.

Gevrey-Chambertin is a commune in the Côte-d'Or department of France in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France.

Côte de Nuits French wine region

The Côte de Nuits is a French wine region located in the northern part of the Côte d'Or, the limestone ridge that is at the heart of the Burgundy wine region. It extends from Dijon to just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, which gives its name to the district and is the regional center. Though some white and rosé wines are produced in the region, the Côte de Nuits is most famous for reds made from pinot noir. The Côte de Nuits covers fourteen communes. Six produce grand cru wines, in the central district between Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges, with four lesser villages either side. The Grand Crus of the Cote de Nuits are some of the smallest appellations in France, less than a hectare in the case of La Romanée.

Côte Chalonnaise

Côte Chalonnaise is a subregion of the Burgundy wine region of France. Côte Chalonnaise lies to the south of the Côte d'Or continuing the same geology southward. It is still in the main area of Burgundy wine production but it includes no Grand cru vineyards. Like the Côte d'Or, it is at the western edge of the broad valley of the river Saône, on the rising ground overlooking the town of Chalon-sur-Saône which is about six kilometers out into the plain. To the north, across the River Dheune, lies the Côte de Beaune. To the south is the Mâconnais. The grapes of the region are predominantly Pinot noir and Chardonnay with some Aligoté and Gamay also grown in vineyards spread over a stretch of 25 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide of undulating land in which vineyards are interspersed with orchards and other forms of farming.

Corton-Charlemagne

It is located in the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny with Chardonnay being the only permitted grape variety. Around 300,000 bottles of white wine are produced each year in the appellation.

Maison Louis Latour is an important négociant-éléveur of red and white wines in Burgundy, France. Currently run by the seventh Louis Latour, Louis-Fabrice Latour, the company has remained family-run since its foundation in 1797 and has built a reputation for tradition and innovation. This Domaine has the largest Grand Cru property in the Cote d'Or with a total of 28.63 hectares. In 1997 Louis Latour was admitted into the exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only admits companies that remain family owned, have a history of 200 years' experience and still bears the name of the founder.

Belgian wine is produced in several parts of Belgium and production, although still modest at 1,400 hectoliters in 2004, has expanded in recent decades.

Pommard wine

Pommard wine is produced in the commune of Pommard in Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Pommard is only used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. There are no Grand Cru vineyards within Pommard, but several highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards. The AOC was created in 1937.

Savigny-lès-Beaune wine

Savigny-lès-Beaune wine is produced in the commune of Savigny-lès-Beaune in Côte de Beaune of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Savigny-lès-Beaune may be used for red and white wine with respectively Pinot noir and Chardonnay as the main grape variety. The name of the appellation is sometimes written simply as Savigny, without the -lès-Beaune suffix. The production consists of slightly over 85 per cent red wine, and slightly less than 15 per cent white wine. There are no Grand Cru vineyards within Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The production consists of slightly over 85 percent red wine, and slightly less than 15 percent white wine. While there are no Grand Cru vineyards within Beaune, there are several well-known and highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards, including some that are owned by the large négociant houses in Beaune and produce some of their "flagship" wines at the Premier Cru level. The AOC was created in 1936.

Nuits-Saint-Georges wine

Nuits-Saint-Georges wine is produced in the communes of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Nuits-Saint-Georges may be used for red and white wine with respectively Pinot noir and Chardonnay as the main grape variety. The name of the appellation is sometimes written simply as Nuits, without the Saint-Georges part. The word "Nuits" has nothing to do with "nighttime" but comes from the Latin for walnuts, Nutium. The production of red wine dominates greatly, with around 97 per cent, and only around three per cent white wine. There are no Grand Cru vineyards within Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Château de Pommard

Château de Pommard is a winery in Pommard, Burgundy, France. Established in 1726, the property is known for its two Châteaux, gardens, and its 20 hectare walled vineyard, Clos Marey-Monge. The Châteaux, the vineyard and the winemaking facilities are operated and owned by Michael Baum, who purchased the estate in 2014. The winery produces "Clos" wines – Pinot Noir produced from the fruit of Clos Marey-Monge and "Family" wines – Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village and Bourgogne wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir appellations across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. In 2016, the estate tested biodynamic methods on 2.5 hectares of vines, and stated the intention of being entirely biodynamic for the 2019 vintage.

Clos Marey-Monge is a vineyard in Burgundy, France, located in Pommard, a village at Château de Pommard domain. The vineyard first became known in 1795, because of a love story between Nicolas-Joseph Marey and Émilie Monge, French nobility son and daughter offspring. The vineyard is named with clos due to the fact it is being walled up. The word is used to referencing well-known wines come from this vineyard. even the wall does not exist now.
