The Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class competitive ensemble based in Tri-Cities, Washington. The corps was officially re-established in 2012, reviving the legacy of the original Tri-City Columbians, who performed from 1955 to 1974. The modern corps aims to provide high-quality musical and visual education to youth in the Pacific Northwest
The Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps originated as a junior corps sponsored by an American Legion post. It was first established in 1955 as the Franklin County American Legion Post 34 Junior Drum and Bugle Corps in Pasco, Washington. In 1961, the corps changed its name from the Franklin County American Legion Post 34 Junior Drum and Bugle Corps to the Tri-City Columbians. Under its American Legion sponsorship, the corps quickly found success, winning four consecutive Washington American Legion state championships between 1958 and 1961.In 1972, the modern Drum Corps International (DCI) was founded. This was spurred by a desire from many junior corps for more competitive freedom than the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) circuits offered. Today, the Columbians are an Open Class corps in DCI.
In their inaugural season in 2013, the Columbians participated in regional competitions across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, marking the beginning of their journey in the Drum Corps International (DCI) Open Class circuit. Over the years, the corps has consistently showcased its talent, earning recognition and respect within the drum corps community. In October 2024, they announced the creation of the Columbia Basin Performing Arts organization, intended to serve as a parent organization to the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps and IMPACT Percussion, with the goal of promoting the growth of the marching arts in the region. As of 2025, the corps continues to inspire youth through their commitment to excellence in the performing arts.
The Columbians are led by Corps Director James Haynes, who took on the role in 2024, succeeding Dillon Miller. Under Haynes' leadership, the corps has continued to grow and develop, maintaining a strong presence in the drum corps community. The Columbians' mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential through achieving excellence in the performing arts.
The Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by Columbians Youth Arts Organization, Inc., a 501(c)(3) musical organization. The Executive Director is James Haynes.
