The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships was born at a meeting of Commonwealth delegates in Munich at the 1969 World Championships. [1] Prior to inclusion in the Commonwealth Games proper in 2002, 15 Commonwealth Championships have taken place since 1971.

The 1998 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVI Commonwealth Games, was a multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 1998 games were the first held in an Asian country and the last Commonwealth Games of the 20th century. For the first time ever, the games included team sports. The other bid from the 1998 games came from Adelaide in Australia. Malaysia was the eighth nation to host the Commonwealth Games after Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, Wales, Jamaica and Scotland. Around 3638 athletes from 70 Commonwealth member nations participated at the games which featured 214 events in 15 sports with 34 of them collected medals.

Although Cambodia did not participate, Laos returned to compete for the first time under the new federation name in this edition of the games, while Vietnam fields their own delegation to the event for the first time as a unified country.

Mouma Das is an Indian table tennis player. Born and brought up in Kolkata, West Bengal, she has represented India in international events since the early 2000s. Das has won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games including a gold in the Women's Team Competition in 2018. She was awarded the Arjuna Award, India's second highest sporting honour in 2013 for her contributions to the sport.

Ryan Ng Zin Rei is a Singaporean badminton player. In 2011, he elected to join the Singapore national junior team when he was 13 years old. Ng was educated at Raffles Institution, but he moved to Singapore Sports School to prepare himself competed at the 2014 Youth Olympics. In 2015, he attended the Republic Polytechnic Institute. He competed in some international junior tournament and reach the semifinals at the 2014 Badminton Asia U17, quarterfinals at the 2015 Dutch and German Juniors, and at the 2016 BWF World Junior Championships. He also the runner-up at the 2016 India Junior and won the Malaysia Junior at the same year. Ng was the men's team bronze medallists at the 2015 and 2017 SEA Games. He competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
An extensive bidding process for the 2026 Commonwealth Games began in 2018, and ended in 2022 with the announcement of the state of Victoria, Australia being the host. The host city was to be announced in 2019 in Rwanda, but was cancelled over lack of interest. The winning bid was announced by Dame Louise Martin, head of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
