Confidential Lady (foaled 4 April 2003) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile in 2005 she showed high-class form, winning four of her seven races including the Star Stakes and the Prix du Calvados. In the following year she finished second in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Prix de Diane. She failed to win in four subsequent races although she ran second in the Premio Lydia Tesio and was not disgraced when finishing fifth in the Champion Stakes. She has had some success as a broodmare.

Background

Confidential Lady is a bay mare bred and owned by the Newmarket-based Cheveley Park Stud. She was trained throughout her racing career by Mark Prescott at the Heath House stable in Newmarket and ridden in all but one of her races by Seb Sanders.

She was sired by Singspiel, an international campaigner whose wins included the Canadian International Stakes, Japan Cup, Dubai World Cup, Coronation Cup, and International Stakes. The best of his other progeny include Moon Ballad Solow and Dar Re Mi. [2] Confidential Lady's dam Confidante showed modest racing ability, winning two minor races in 1998, [3] and was a daughter of Won't She Tell, a half sister to Affirmed. [4]

Racing career

2005: two-year-old season

On her racecourse debut, Confidential Lady started the 2/1 favourite for a maiden race over six furlongs at Hamilton Park Racecourse on 8 June and finished third behind Original Source and Rainbow Bay. Three weeks later she started 5/6 favourite for a similar event over seven furlongs on firm ground at Catterick and recorded her first success as she led from start and came home three and a half lengths clear of her seven opponents. [5] Three days after her win at Catterick, the filly was back on the track for a minor event at Beverley Racecourse and won again, making all the running and finishing two lengths in front of Jeu de Mot. [6] On 21 July Confidential Lady was stepped up in class for the Listed Star Stakes over seven furlongs at Sandown Park and was made the 11/2 second favourite in an eleven-runner field. She went to the front soon after the start, went clear of the field in the last quarter mile and won "comfortably" from the favourite Vague (runner-up in the Albany Stakes) with Nasheej in third place. Confidential Lady was moved up in class again for the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse on 6 August and started the 11/4 second favourite behind Spinning Queen. She took lead at halfway but was caught in the final strides and beaten a head by Nasheej. Two weeks after her defeat at Newmarket, the filly was sent to France to contest the Prix du Calvados over 1400 metres on very soft ground at Deauville Racecourse. Ridden by the French jockey Jean-Bernard Eyquem she led from the start and kept on strongly to win by one and a half lengths from the Criquette Head-trained favourite Quiet Royal. [8] For her final run of the year, Confidential Lady returned to France for the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp Racecourse on 2 October. She raced in second place for most of the way but weakened in the closing stages and came home tenth of the fourteen runners behind Rumplestiltskin.

2006: three-year-old season

Confidential Lady began her second campaign in the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on 7 May and started at odds of 12/1 in a thirteen-runner field. She tracked the front-running Speciosa for most of the way but was unable to close the gap in the final stages and was beaten two and a half lengths into second place. Those finishing behind included Nasheej, Spinning Queen, Rumplestiltskin, Nannina and Donna Blini. Three weeks later the filly was made the 5/2 favourite for the Irish 1000 Guineas on heavy ground at the Curragh but after leading for most of the way she tired in the last quarter mile and came home sixth of the fifteen runners behind Nightime.

On 11 June Confidential Lady was sent to France again for the Prix de Diane over 2100 metres at Chantilly Racecourse and was made the 8/1 fifth choice in the betting by British bookmakers but went off at 43/1 on the French pari-mutuel. [9] Germance (Prix Saint-Alary) started favourite, while the best fancied of the other fourteen runners were Daltaya (Prix de la Grotte), Alloway (Prix Cléopâtre) and Queen Cleopatra (Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial). In a change of tactics Confidential Lady was retrained by Sanders in the early stages before moving up on the inside to make the final turn in fifth place. She was switched to the left in the straight, overtook the leader Germance 200 metres and won by one and a half lengths from the favourite with Queen Cleopatra a nose away in third. [10] Her winning time of 2:05.9 equaled the race record set by Lypharita in 1985. [9] Mark Prescott, who was winning a first classic race in a 35-year training career said "We were lucky with the draw, we were lucky knowing that there would be a strong pace and we were very lucky that the filly was tough enough to take a race like this only two weeks after that slightly disappointing run in Ireland. But she'll have a bit of a breather now, which she thoroughly deserves". [11]

Five weeks after her win at Chantilly, Confidential Lady was stepped up in distance for the Irish Oaks over one and a half miles at the Curragh but made little impression and came home fifth of the six runners behind Alexandrova. After break of almost three months the filly returned at Newmarket in October when she was the only three-year-old filly in the eight-runner field for the Champion Stakes over ten furlongs. She ran fifth behind the six-year-old mare Pride with Sir Percy and Notnowcato finishing behind. Confidential Lady ended her season with a trip to Italy for the Premio Lydia Tesio over 2000 metres at Capannelle Racecourse in Rome in which she was beaten into second place by the German-trained four-year-old Floriot. Confidential Lady returned for one more race in 2007 but showed no signs of her old form as she came home last of the fourteen runners in the Doonside Cup at Ayr Racecourse on 22 September. [13]

She then finished fifth in The Oaks and second in the Glorious Stakes before recording an upset victory over a strong field in the Yorkshire Oaks. She never won again and was retired from racing at the end of 1992. She had modest success as a dam of winners.

Desirable was a British thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1983 she won on her debut and then took the Princess Margaret Stakes on her second appearance. After finishing second in the Lowther Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes she recorded her biggest victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but was placed in the 1000 Guineas and the Nassau Stakes as well as finishing fourth in the Coronation Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare, producing the 1000 Guineas winner Shadayid and several other good winners.

Embla was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1985 until October 1986 she won four of her nine races. As a two-year-old she finished second on her debut and won two minor races before recording an upset victory over a strong field for the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she finished fifth in the 1000 Guineas and second in the Coronation Stakes before ending her career with a win in the Petition Stakes. Donna Blini is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation in Britain in 2005 when she won three of her four races including the Cherry Hinton Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was mainly campaigned in sprint races and won one minor race from seven starts. She was retired from racing having won four of her eleven races and exported to become a broodmare in Japan. Glorosia was a French-bred British-trained thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until September 1999 she won three times and was placed three times from eleven races. She was at her best as a two-year-old when she won on her debut, finished third in the May Hill Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. She struggled as a three-year-old and failed to win in three races. She remained in training at four and won one minor race from five attempts. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare in Germany.

Zahrat Dubai is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After running unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she wintered in Dubai and returned to Britain to record an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes. As a three-year-old she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and ran fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas. After winning on her racecourse debut she was beaten in her three remaining races as a two-year-old but showed very promising form when finishing third in the Fillies' Mile. In the following spring she finished second in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest success in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She went on to finish third in the Prix de Diane but finished last in her two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She had limited success as a broodmare.

Nightime is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2006. After finishing unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she won a maiden race on her debut as a three-year-old and then recorded an emphatic six-length victory in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She failed to reproduce her form in two subsequent races and was retired in 2007. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a broodmare.

Katies was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After recording one minor win as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the spring and summer of the following year, taking major prizes in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was rated the best three-year-old filly trained in Britain. After the end of her racing career she became a successful broodmare whose foals had great success in Japan.

Helen Street was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was rated the best British-trained filly of her generation after winning the Prix du Calvados and finishing second under top weight in the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was a top-class performer over middle distances, winning the Irish Oaks, finishing third in the Yorkshire Oaks and fourth in both the Champion Stakes and the Washington, D.C. International Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had a successful career a broodmare, producing Street Cry and Helsinki, the dam of Shamardal.

Possessive Dancer was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from November 1990 until May 1992 she competed in four countries and won five of her eight races. After winning her only start as a juvenile in 1990, she showed relentless improvement in the first half of the following year, winning two handicap races before taking the Oaks d'Italia and the Irish Oaks. She failed to reproduce her best form in her three subsequent races and was retired from racing in 1992. She had some success as a broodmare.

Leggera was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who produced her best performances in France. As a juvenile, she won two of her four starts including the Listed Prix Saraca on her final start. In the following year she ran well without winning in the early part of the year before taking the Group 2 Prix de Pomone and the Group 1 Prix Vermeille and then produced a career-best performance when running a close second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She was not as successful in 1998 when she won the Doonside Cup in Scotland and finished fourth in her second attempt at Arc de Triomphe. She had no success as a broodmare.

Chorist was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a consistent performer at eight to ten furlongs who improved through her four seasons on the track. After running unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she won four races including the Upavon Fillies' Stakes as a three-year-old in 2002. She improved in the following year when she took the Hoppings Stakes, Golden Daffodil Stakes and Blandford Stakes. At the age of five in 2004 she reached her peak with wins in the Pipalong Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing second in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.
