Congress Park is a park and a neighborhood in the City and County of Denver, Colorado, United States. In 2010, the neighborhood had 10,235 residents and 5,724 households. [1]
Congress Park has a median income of $62,925. [1] (2000) compared to $55,129 for Denver as a whole. The neighborhood's poverty rate is 10.7% compared to 14.3% for Denver as a whole. [1] Racial make-up is 82.4% white, 4.5% African-American, 8.1% Latino, and 2.1% Asian-Pacific; 9.7% of Congress Park residents are foreign born. [1]
Between 1880 and 1890 Denver's population grew from 35,000 to over 100,000. By the late 1880s, the air quality in Denver had pushed the population to the outskirts of town and improvements in transportation such as cable cars made the eastern sections of the Capitol Hill neighborhood more accessible to the middle class. With the growing population and expanding middle class, Congress Park was platted into more than ten subdivisions between 1887 and 1888 and on March 11, 1889 the area was incorporated into Denver. [2] While originally known as Capitol Heights, Congress Park neighborhood has been used by the city of Denver since the 1970s. [2]
The area was originally known as Cemetery Hill; named after the City Cemetery located in the area. In 1887, the city of Denver constructed a reservoir on land previously designated as part of the cemetery but never used as such, and by 1890 the cemetery had become a deterrent to growth in the eastern Capitol Hill neighborhood; so much so that Colorado Senator Henry Teller put forth a bill requesting the land be redesigned to a park. [2] The graves were relocated and Congress Park was born. The original park encompassed lands that currently include Cheesman Park, the Denver Botanic Gardens, and the Denver Water Board. In 1903, the area south of the reservoir to 8th Ave. became the city nursery supplying the growing city with the trees and flowers for its parks and parkways.
The area to the north and east of the nursery expanded dramatically after 1908 when a second reservoir was built in the area.
Since 2016, the congress park flag football league(CPFFL) has been meeting every Sunday during the football season.
According to the 1995 Congress Park Neighborhood Plan, "The Congress Park neighborhood is bounded on the west by York Street, on the north by Colfax Avenue, on the east by Colorado Boulevard and on the south by Sixth Avenue." [3]
The park contains eight tennis courts, several athletic fields, a children's playground, a picnic pavilion, and one of Denver's public outdoor swimming pools.[ citation needed ]
The Denver Botanic Gardens is located on the west side of York St in Cheesman Park. The Communications Center of the City and County of Denver is located at 950 Josephine Street, in the north end of Congress Park, and is easily seen because of its tall antenna. The building houses Denver's 911 call center and its police and fire dispatchers. Adjacent to the Congress Park's north border are several underground water storage cisterns, owned and operated by the Denver Water Department.
The Congress Park neighborhood includes a large section of East Seventh Avenue Parkway, along which runs Denver's largest historic district, the 7th Avenue Historic District.[ citation needed ]
The South Platte River is one of the two principal tributaries of the Platte River. Flowing through the U.S. states of Colorado and Nebraska, it is itself a major river of the American Midwest and the American Southwest/Mountain West. Its drainage basin includes much of the eastern flank of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, much of the populated region known as the Colorado Front Range and Eastern Plains, and a portion of southeastern Wyoming in the vicinity of the city of Cheyenne. It joins the North Platte River in western Nebraska to form the Platte, which then flows across Nebraska to the Missouri. The river serves as the principal source of water for eastern Colorado. In its valley along the foothills in Colorado, it has permitted agriculture in an area of the Colorado Piedmont and Great Plains that is otherwise arid.
Located in the city and county of Denver, Colorado, the Capitol Hill neighborhood is bordered by Broadway, Downing Street, Colfax Avenue, and Seventh Avenue, which carry large volumes of traffic around the neighborhood. It is technically located in East Denver which begins immediately east of Broadway, the neighborhood's western boundary. Many consider the Cheesman Park neighborhood to be a part of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, but as defined by the city, Cheesman Park is a separate neighborhood. Denver also recognizes a statistical neighborhood called North Capitol Hill, also known as Uptown by some residents. Colfax Avenue is the border between these two neighborhoods.
Civic Center, Denver is a neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, United States. The northern part of the neighborhood overlaps partially with the Denver Civic Center, an area of parks and civic buildings.
PrideFest is an annual gay pride event held each June in Denver, honoring the culture and heritage of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the State of Colorado. The first "Pride" event in Denver, known as Gay Pride Week, took place June, 1974 and included a "gay-in" in Cheesman Park attended by about fifty people. The first Gay Pride Parade took place in 1975 with approximately 200 people marching along sidewalks to the Civic Center Park unaware that they needed a permit. The first event resembling the present day Denver PrideFest occurred in 1976, the same year the local community center, now known as the Center on Colfax, was founded. The Center organizes and produces the festival and parade each year. The event currently consists of a two-day festival at Civic Center Park, the Pride 5K, and culminates with a parade along Colfax Avenue. Denver PrideFest now draws 525,000 guests annually, making it the third largest pride festival and seventh largest pride parade in the United States.
Cherry Creek is a neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. It has many newer residences mixed in with some of Denver's older homes.
Jefferson Park is a neighborhood and public park that overlooks Downtown Denver, Colorado from its perch across Interstate 25 (I-25). It is located in the area that is called North Denver. Views east from Jefferson Park take in Elitch Gardens Theme Park, The Children's Museum, Denver's Downtown Aquarium, Pepsi Center, the REI flagship store and other attractions in Downtown's Central Platte Valley. Downtown Denver and the Central Platte Valley are quickly accessed from Jefferson Park, using the 23rd Avenue overpass on I-25 and Water Street. In addition, the Light Rail C-Line is located by Empower Field at Mile High in the southern part of the neighborhood.

There is over 23 million square feet (2,100,000 m2) of office space in downtown Denver, with 132,000 workers. The downtown area consists mostly of the neighborhoods of Union Station and Central Business District. LoDo and RiNo are notable districts within downtown. Some of the more popular specific attractions include the 16th Street pedestrian mall, Larimer Square, the re-emerging Theatre District near Curtis and 14th, and Civic Center Park. Surrounding neighborhoods include Capitol Hill and Uptown to the east, Highland to the west, Five Points to the north, and the Golden Triangle to the south.
Cheesman Park is an urban park and neighborhood located in the City and County of Denver, Colorado, United States.
North Capitol Hill, often referred to as Uptown, is a center city neighborhood near the Colorado State Capitol. The neighborhood has a diverse population, and is similar to surrounding neighborhoods of Five Points and Capitol Hill, in that it cannot be defined by a single demographic. Currently, downtown is undergoing significant redevelopment and gentrification, with many young residents and transplants populating the apartments and homes that frequent the area. North Capitol Hill had a violent crime rate of 13.74 incidents per 1,000 residents in 2014, one of the ten highest rates among Denver neighborhoods. The poverty rate is also much higher than city and national averages, with 34.74% of the population living in poverty. North Capitol Hill is bordered by 20th Ave on the north, Park Ave on the northeast, Downing St on the east, Colfax Ave on the south, and Broadway on the west.
Virginia Village is a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, roughly five miles southeast of downtown. The neighborhood consists of a mixture of town homes, single-family homes, shopping plazas, and mid to high-rise apartment and office buildings. It is served by the Colorado Station on the E, F, and H RTD light rail lines. The neighborhood is bounded on the west by Colorado Boulevard; on the southwest by Interstate 25; on the south by Evans Avenue; on the east by Quebec Street; on the northeast by Cherry Creek; and on the north by Mississippi Avenue. Holly Street divides the Virginia Village neighborhood into two areas, each represented by a neighborhood association. The area west of Holly Street comprises the Virginia Village Ellis Community Association, while the area to the east of Holly comprises the Cook Park Neighborhood Association.
City Park West is a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. It is a district of mostly single-family homes, small apartment buildings, and one very large hospital complex. The center of the district features the medical facilities of Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital, Exempla St. Joseph's Hospital, and a number of other medical office buildings and related facilities. Exempla Saint Joseph's Hospital has embarked on a major expansion project to create the newest, most modern hospital in Colorado. The new facility opened in December 2014.
Speer is the official name for the Denver neighborhood bounded by 7th Avenue (north), Broadway (West), Alameda Avenue (South) and Downing Street (East). The northeast portion northeast of Speer Boulevard is generally referred to as Alamo Placita due to a local park and historic district of this name.
Cole is a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. It is in the area commonly known as North Denver. According to the Piton Foundation in 2007 the population of the neighborhood was 6,041, and there were 1,794 housing units. At the time of the 2010 census, the racial breakdown of the neighborhood was 19.59% non-Hispanic white, 16.7% African American, 61.21% Hispanic or Latino, 0.43% Native American, and 0.45% Asian.

Clayton is a neighborhood located in the city and county Denver, Colorado. Often confused with Park Hill, Cole, or the City Park neighborhoods, Clayton is a distinct neighborhood as defined by the city of Denver. The neighborhood is named for the historical former George W. Clayton Trust and College located on the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Colorado Blvd. This college has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
