Connor Murphy (born 22 October 2001) is an Australian triple jumper. He became Australian champion in 2024 and competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics. He is the son of Andrew Murphy and Elizabeth Murphy. [1]

Early life

He attended Trinity Grammar School in New South Wales and studies biomedical engineering and neuroscience at the University of Sydney. [2] [3]

Career

He jumped a new personal best 16.45 metres to win the triple jump at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, in December 2023. [4]

He improved his personal best to 16.82 metres in February 2024 in Melbourne. [5] [6] In April 2024, he won the national triple jump title at the Australian Athletics Championships in Adelaide. [7]

He was selected to compete for Australia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He jumped 16.80 metres in the qualifying round to reach the final. [8] [9]

Personal life

He is the son of Australian Olympic triple jumper Andrew Murphy. [10]

The men's triple jump event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California had an entry list of 28 competitors, with two qualifying groups before the final (12) took place on August 4, 1984. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The top twelve and ties, and all those reaching 16.60 metres advanced to the final. The event was won by Al Joyner of the United States, the nation's first title in the men's long jump since 1904 and fourth overall. Mike Conley Sr., also an American, took silver. Keith Connor's bronze was Great Britain's first medal in the event since 1908. The Soviet boycott broke that nation's four-Games gold medal and eight-Games podium streaks.

The men's triple jump event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Saturday, July 12, 1924. Twenty triple jumpers from twelve nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation was 4. The event was won by Nick Winter of Australia, the nation winning gold in its debut in the event. Argentina also medaled in its first triple jump appearance, with Luis Brunetto taking silver. Defending champion Vilho Tuulos of Finland took bronze, the fourth man to win a second medal in the event.

Ian Bernard Campbell is a retired long and triple jumper from Australia. He is best known for being "fouled" multiple times during the 1980 Moscow Olympics, under controversial circumstances.

Kenneth ("Ken") John Lorraway was an Australian triple jumper, who represented his native country twice at the Summer Olympics: 1980 and 1984 and Commonwealth Games: 1978 and 1982. His best Olympic result was finishing in 8th place in Moscow, USSR with a leap of 16.44 metres.

Henry Frayne is an Australian track and field athlete who competes in triple jump and long jump. He qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and finished 14th in qualifying with a distance of 7.93m, and did not qualify for the final.
