Ruth E. Carter is an American costume designer for film and television. She is best known for her collaborations with Spike Lee, John Singleton, and Ryan Coogler. During her film career, Carter has been nominated four times for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, for her work on Lee's biographical film Malcolm X (1992), Steven Spielberg's historical drama film Amistad (1997), and winning twice for Coogler's Marvel superhero films Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). She was the first African-American to win and be nominated for Best Costume Design and the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category. <i>Mulan</i> (2020 film) Film directed by Niki Caro

Mulan is a 2020 American fantasy action drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated film Mulan, itself based on the Chinese folklore story Ballad of Mulan. The film stars Yifei Liu in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. It was also Cheng Pei-pei's final film before her death in 2024. In the film, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, masquerades as a man to take her ailing father's place during a general conscription to counter the Rouran army in Imperial China.

The Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Period Costume Design for Television Series was awarded for the first time in 2000, honoring 1999 television. While it did honor period costumes, it also honored fantasy television, and the award was titled Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Period/Fantasy Television Series. Those two genres were separated into their own awards categories in 2016, resulting in the current award designation.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a 2020 American drama film directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, based on the 1982 play of the same name by August Wilson. The film stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts. Inspired by the career of Ma Rainey, an influential blues singer and the title character, the film dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago.

The Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Costume Design for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television was awarded for the first time in 2018, for television airing the previous year. Previously, it honored both Fantasy/Sci-Fi series, in the category Excellence in Fantasy Television Series, and Period costuming together, with the award titled Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Period/Fantasy Television Series.

Unorthodox is a German drama television miniseries that debuted on Netflix on March 26, 2020. The first Netflix series to be primarily in Yiddish, it is inspired by Deborah Feldman's 2012 autobiography, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. The 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2020, were presented on April 4, 2021. The ceremony was broadcast on both TNT and TBS at 9:00 P.M. EST / 6:00 P.M. PST, airing for one hour rather than the usual two. The nominees were announced by Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs on February 4, 2021 via Instagram Live.

Gabriele Binder is a costume designer based in Berlin. She is known for her work as the costume designer for The Queen's Gambit, for which she won the 2020 Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Period Television.

Mark Ricker is an American art director and production designer. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Production Design for the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Ricker has also been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards in the category Outstanding Art Direction and Outstanding Production Design for his work on the television programs Escape at Dannemora and Halston and on the television film You Don't Know Jack.

Mia Neal is an American hair stylist. In 2021 she, Jamika Wilson, and Sergio López-Rivera won an Academy Award in the category Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. This made Mia and Jamika the first black women to win an Academy Award in the category Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Bina Daigeler is a German costume designer. She was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Costume Design for Mulan.

The 2020–21 film awards season began in December 2020 with the 33rd European Film Awards and ended in April 2021 with the 93rd Academy Awards.
