Trinidad and Tobago sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Its participation in the Beijing games marked its eighteenth Olympic appearance and fifteenth Summer Olympic appearance since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, excluding its joint participation with Jamaica and Barbados in 1960 as the West Indies Federation. With 28 athletes, more Trinidadians had competed at the Olympics than in any other single Olympic Games in its history before Beijing. Athletes representing Trinidad and Tobago advanced past the preliminary or qualification rounds in twelve events and reached the final rounds in four of those events. Of those four events, silver medals were won in the men's 100 meters and in the men's 4x100 meters relay. The latter was upgraded to gold due to one member of the quartet that crossed the line first, Nesta Carter, testing positive for a banned substance, resulting in their disqualification. The nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony that year was swimmer and Athens medalist George Bovell.
David Karl Brandl is an Austrian swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a multiple-time Austrian champion, a four-time national record holder, and a current member of Perger Swimming Club in Perg. He also won a bronze medal, as a member of the Austrian swimming team, at the 2008 European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
Dominik Koll is an Austrian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian, a 41-time national titleholder, and a 5-time long and short course Austrian record holder. Koll is a member of the swimming team for SK VÖEST Linz. He won a bronze medal, as a member of the Austrian swimming team, at the 2008 European Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Koll is one of few LGBT Olympians to come out as gay.
Christian Scherübl is an Austrian swimmer, who specialized in long-distance and relay freestyle events. Within a 16-year and younger age group, Scherubl set an Austrian record time of 4:05.20 in the boys' 400 m freestyle at the 2010 Geneva Long Course International Meet in Geneva, Switzerland. Scherubl is also a member of the swimming team for ATUS Graz, and is coached and trained by Christoph Schreiner.
Valentin "Vali" Preda is a Romanian swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. He represented his nation Romania at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has also claimed multiple Romanian national records in the breaststroke, and medley relays. Preda is a former member of the swimming team for the Louisville Cardinals, and a graduate of exercise science at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
Arnaud Ghislain is a Belgian sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He is an indoor national senior champion for his category, and also a member of the Belgian national track relay team.
Yunier Pérez Romero is a Cuban track and field athlete, who specializes in sprinting events.
Dimitrios Gravalos is a Greek sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He won the gold medal for the 400 metres at the 2003 European Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland, with a time of 46.54 seconds.
Mitsuhiro Abiko is a Japanese sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. Abiko competed in the men's 4 × 400 m relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, along with his teammates Kenji Narisako, Dai Tamesue, and Yoshihiro Horigome. He ran on the starting leg of the second heat, with an individual-split time of 46.70 seconds. Abiko and his team finished the relay in sixth place for a seasonal best time of 3:04.18, failing to advance into the final.
Balázs Gercsák is a Hungarian swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. Gercsak is a former member of the Florida Gators, and a graduate of digital media productions at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He is also the brother of open water swimmer Csaba Gercsák, who won the bronze medal in the 25 km marathon at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Yoel Armando Tapia Gómez is a Dominican sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He won two medals for the national relay team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and also, at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Alexei Puninski is a Russian-born Croatian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events, and an entrepreneur. His family moved from Russia to Croatia in 1999. He represented Croatia at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has claimed multiple Croatian championship titles and national records in both the freestyle and butterfly. He has also won a career total of three medals in a major international competition, spanning the European Junior Championships and European Short Course Championships in Helsinki, Finland, with respective times of 24.57 and 23.21.
Brice Panel is a French sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He set his personal best time of 45.54 seconds by finishing second at the Resisprint meeting in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Pieter Smith is a South African sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He set his personal best time of 45.63 seconds by winning the 400 metres event at the 2009 South African Championships in Stellenbosch.
Pedro Juan Mejía Eusebio is a Dominican sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He won two bronze medals, as a member of the Dominican Republic national team, in the men's 4 × 400 m relay at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and at the 2008 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.
Ravil Nachaev is an Uzbek former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a gold medalist in the 50 m freestyle at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.
Jovon Toppin is a Trinidadian sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. Toppin competed for the men's 4 × 400 m relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, along with his teammates Ato Modibo, Cowin Mills, and Stann Waithe. He ran on the second leg of the second heat, with an individual-split time of 45.92 seconds. Toppin and his team finished the relay in fifth place, for a seasonal best time of 3:04.12, failing to advance into the final.
Stann Waithe is a Trinidadian sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He is a member of the track and field team for the Michigan Wolverines, while attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Lim Nam-gyun is a South Korean swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. He represented his nation South Korea at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has won two bronze medals, as a member of the men's 400 and 800 m freestyle relay teams at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.
Denys Viktorovych Syzonenko is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a single-time Olympian (2004), and a two-time relay medalist at the Universiade. He also trains for Dynamo Kyiv swimming team, under his longtime coach Viktor Turchin.
