Holcomb was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent after the 1995 NFL draft. He was also a member of the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings.

After retiring from football he became the Associate Director of Educational Programs for the NCAA, and currently works as a football broadcaster, previously serving on the Indianapolis Colts broadcast crew for nearly a decade.

He served as the head football coach at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California from 1966 to 1969 and at San Diego State University from 1981 to 1985, compiling a career college football record of 45–51–3. Following his stint as head coach for the San Diego State Aztecs, Scovil worked as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL), where he was credited with developing Randall Cunningham, until his death from a heart attack at Veterans Stadium during the 1989 season. In memory of Scovil's passing, the Eagles marked their helmets with black electrical tape for the rest of the season.
