State schools in Scotland use the Scottish Qualifications Certificate instead. However, private schools in Scotland often choose to follow the English GCSE system.

The school was the centre of controversy in June 2015 when the leadership of the school scrapped the retention of single gender teaching, instead opting for a co-educational, integrated model against the wishes of some parents.
