Crusade (foaled 11 March 2009) is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his upset win in the 2011 Middle Park Stakes. He showed his best form as a juvenile when he won one minor race from his first three starts before taking the Middle Park at odds of 25/1. On his only subsequent start that year, he finished sixth on dirt in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He ran poorly on his only appearance as a three-year-old and was retired to become a breeding stallion in South Africa.

Background

Crusade is a dark bay or brown horse with no white markings [2] bred in Kentucky by La Traviata Syndicate, a breeding organisation associated with the Coolmore Stud in Ireland. The colt was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle. Like many Coolmore horses, the official details of his ownership changed from race to race: he was sometimes listed as being the property of Michael Tabor, whilst on other occasions he was described as being owned by a partnership of Tabor, Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier.

Crusade was sired by Mr Greeley, whose five wins included the Swale Stakes and the Lafayette Stakes and who also finished second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. [3] As a breeding stallion, Mr Greeley is best known as the sire of the outstanding Irish-trained filly Finsceal Beo and the Sussex Stakes winner Reel Buddy. [4] Crusade's dam La Traviata was bought as a two-year-old at the Fasig-Tipton Calder sale in February 2006 for $1.1 million by the bloodstock agent Dermot "Demi" O'Byrne on behalf of Coolmore. [5] She showed good form in a brief racing career, winning three of her races in the United States in 2007 including the Grade III Victory Ride Stakes. [6] She was descended from the American broodmare Miel, making her a distant relative of Rodrigo de Triano and Shaadi. [7] As a broodmare La Traviata went on to produce the multiple Group One winner Seventh Heaven. [8]

Racing career

2011: two-year-old season

Crusade was ridden in his first three starts by Colm O'Donoghue. For his racecourse debut the colt was sent to England for a maiden races over seven furlongs at York Racecourse on 19 August. Starting as a 33/1 outsider he made some progress in the second half of the race but then faded inside the final furlong and finished eighth of the seventeen runners, more than eleven lengths behind the winner Rugged Cross. Nine days later the colt started 5/2 favourite against fifteen opponents in a maiden over six furlongs at the Curragh. Crusade went to the front at half-way, broke away from his rivals a furlong out and won by two lengths from the filly Pearl In The Sand. [9]

On 22 September Crusade was sent back in England and stepped up in class for the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse and started the 5/1 second choice in the betting behind the Roger Varian-trained Farraaj. He took second place approaching the final furlong but looked to be outpaced in the closing stages and finished fourth behind Crius, Farraaj and Zip Top. Despite his defeat Crusade was moved up again in class when he returned to Newmarket for the Group One Middle Park Stakes on 8 October in which he was ridden by Seamie Heffernan. He started a 25/1 outsider in a sixteen-runner field headed by the joint-favourites Caspar Netscher (Gimcrack Stakes) and Family One (Prix Robert Papin), whilst the other thirteen runners included Bapak Chinta (Norfolk Stakes, Lilbourne Lad (Railway Stakes), Saigon (Rose Bowl Stakes) and Crusade's more fancied stablemate Reply who had won a valuable sales race at Doncaster. After tracking the leaders, Crusade made a forward move a quarter mile from the finish, overtook Reply just inside the final furlong and stayed on to win by three quarters of a length. Lilbourne Lad got the best of a five-way blanket finish for second place ahead of Reply, Balty Boys, Caspar Netscher and Saigon. [10] After the race Heffernan commented "He has improved from run to run. It's grand. When it comes together it is great. He is taking his race well, he has plenty of scope and plenty of speed." [11]

On his final run of the year, Crusade joined his more highly regarded stablemate Daddy Long Legs for a trip to the United States to contest the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on the dirt track at Churchill Downs on 5 November. Partnered by the American jockey Julien Leparoux he started slowly and never looked likely to win, but made steady progress in the last quarter mile to finish sixth of the thirteen runners behind Hansen, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Dullahan and Take Charge Indy. 2012: three-year-old season

Crusade was entered in the Irish 2000 Guineas but did not run in the races, instead making his first appearance of the year in the Greenlands Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh on 26 May in which he was matched against older horses. Ridden by his trainer's son Joseph O'Brien he began to struggle in the last quarter mile and dropped away to finish last of the eleven runners behind the six-year-old gelding Tiddliwinks. [13]

Assessment

In the 2011 European Thoroughbred Rankings, Crusade was given a rating of 113, making him the fifteenth-best juvenile colt of the year, six pounds behind the top-rated Camelot. [14]

Stud record

At the end of 2012 Crusade was sold to the Kwa-Zulu Natal Breeders Club and exported to become a breeding stallion at the Highdown Stud in South Africa. [15] A representative of the buyers described Crusade as "a handsome horse, well-balanced and athletic. He has a good head, a good eye and a lovely disposition - very nice natured and easy to work with. He is a correct, athletic walker with a very good speed pedigree". [16]

He subsequently won the Irish Derby and International Stakes before being defeated by The Grey Gatsby in the Irish Champion Stakes. His racing career was ended by injury in October 2014. He is standing at Coolmore stud.

Excellent Art was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was trained in England and showed good form, winning the National Stakes and the Mill Reef Stakes and being placed in both the Prix Morny and the Railway Stakes. In the following year he was moved in Ireland and was even better: he won the St James's Palace Stakes, finished second in the Sussex Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf and was rated one of the best three-year-old colts in the world. He was then retired to stud and had some success as a sire of winners before being exported to India in 2013.

Black Minnaloushe is an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred in Kentucky, he was sold as a yearling and sent to Ireland to race for the Irish-based Coolmore Stud organisation. After winning both his races as a juvenile, he was initially disappointing in the early part of 2001 but then showed marked improvement to win the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. He was beaten in his last four races and was retired to stud at the end of the year. He has had success as a breeding stallion in the United States, New Zealand and South Africa.

Saddlers' Hall was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After finishing fifth in his only race as a juvenile he developed into a high class staying colt in 1991, winning the King Edward VII Stakes and finishing second the St Leger. He reached his peak in the first half of the following season, winning four consecutive Group races: the John Porter Stakes, Ormonde Stakes, Coronation Cup and Princess of Wales's Stakes. He was retired to stud at the end of the year and had some success as a breeding stallion, siring the St Leger winner Silver Patriarch. He died in 2008 at the age of twenty.

Seventh Heaven is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed little promise as a two-year-old and was well beaten in maiden races at Leopardstown and Newmarket. As a three-year-old she showed improved form as she was moved up in distance, winning a maiden at Dundalk and the Lingfield Oaks Trial at Lingfield. She ran poorly in The Oaks but then emerged as a top-class performer with wins over strong fields in the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks.

Distant Music is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred and owned by Khalid Abdullah he was trained throughout his racing career in England by Barry Hills. As a two-year-old in 1999 he was unbeaten in three races including the Champagne Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes and was the top-rated British-trained juvenile of the season. He began 2000 as the favourite for the 2000 Guineas but after losing his unbeaten record in the Greenham Stakes he was well-beaten in the Newmarket classic. Later in the year he won the Park Stakes and finished third in the Champion Stakes. He failed to reproduce his best form as a four-year-old but did add one more important victory in the Goffs International Stakes. He later stood as a breeding stallion in Ireland, Australia, England and Germany but had no success as a sire of major winners.

Scenic was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a juvenile in 1988 he was beaten on his debut but won his next three races, ending his season by dead-heating with Prince of Dance in the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old he won the Scottish Classic, as well as finishing third in the St James's Palace Stakes and fourth in the Champion Stakes. He failed to win in three starts in 1990 and was retired to stud at the end of the year. He later became a very successful breeding stallion in Australia.

Churchill is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He was rated the best two-year-old colt in Europe in 2016, winning five of his six races including the Chesham Stakes, Tyros Stakes, Futurity Stakes, National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. On his three-year-old debut he won the 2000 Guineas and followed up with a second Classic victory in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Bushranger is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2008 when he won four of his seven races including the Anglesey Stakes in Ireland, the Prix Morny in France and the Middle Park Stakes in England as well as finishing second in the Phoenix Stakes. He was rated the second-best juvenile of the year in Europe. Bushranger failed to recapture his form in three starts as a three-year-old and was retired to stud at the end of 2009. He has had some success as a sire of winners.

Balla Cove was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire who competed in Britain and the United States. He was at his best as a two-year-old in 1989 when he was placed in the Bernard Van Cutsem Stakes and the Solario Stakes before recording an upset victory in the Middle Park Stakes and running creditably on dirt in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He was then transferred to race in the United States where he ran consistently without recapturing his best juvenile form, recording two minor wins in twenty-three starts over the next two seasons. He was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion in Ireland but made little impact as a sire of winners.

Beethoven is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset victory in the 2009 Dewhurst Stakes. He was highly tried as a juvenile and ran prominently in several major races before winning the Dewhurst on his tenth appearance of the season at odds of 33/1. As a three-year-old he won the Desmond Stakes and ended his year with a success in the Qatar Derby. He was based in Qatar for the rest of his racing career, making his last appearance in 2015.

Lavery was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1998 he was beaten on his debut but then recorded his biggest success with an emphatic victory in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. In the following spring he won the Shergar Cup Sprint but was beaten in his next two races before being exported to South Africa. He won three times in South Africa before being retired to stud but had little success as a breeding stallion.

Sudirman is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2013 he was beaten in his first two starts but then ran up three consecutive victories including the Railway Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes. He also finished second in the National Stakes later that year. He made little impact in two starts as a three-year-old.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">U S Navy Flag (horse)</span> Thoroughbred racehorse trained in Ireland

U S Navy Flag is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2017 he became the first horse in 35 years to win both the Middle Park Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes. As two-year-old he was beaten in his first four racecourse appearances, including the Coventry Stakes before winning a maiden race in July. He then finished second in the July Stakes and fourth in the Phoenix Stakes before recording his first significant win in the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes. He won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse on 30 September and returned to the same track two weeks later to follow up in the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old in 2018 he ran in several major mile races without success before dropping back to sprint distances to win the July Cup.

He was the top-rated two-year-old colt in Europe in 2023 when he was unbeaten in three races including the Superlative Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old he finished unplaced in the 2000 Guineas before returning to form to win the Epsom Derby. He went on to defeat older horses in the Coral-Eclipse and the Juddmonte International Stakes.
