DBC News (Bengali : ডিবিসি নিউজ), derived from "Dhaka Bangla", [1] is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite and cable news television channel, owned and operated by Dhaka Bangla Media & Communication Ltd. [2] [3] The founder of the channel was Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury. [4] [5] DBC News is headquartered in the Mohakhali neighbourhood of Dhaka. [6]
In 2013, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission granted Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury's Dhaka Bangla Media & Communication a license to broadcast "Dhaka-Bangla Television". [1] It later received its frequency allocation in January 2015. [7] The channel was launched as DBC News on 21 September 2016, beginning with the ten o'clock morning news bulletin. [2] The launch ceremony was attended by then Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and then Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu. [4] [5] In December 2019, DBC News, along with three other Bangladeshi television channels, signed an agreement with UNICEF to air programming regarding children's issues. [8]
On 27 October 2017, a motorcade of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was attacked in Feni District. The news van of DBC and other news organizations were damaged in the attack. [9] DBC News correspondent Partho Hasan was attacked by Shirhan Sharif Tomal, Bangladesh Jubo League leader and son of Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif, on 29 November 2017. [10] [11] Bangladesh Police closed eight members of the Detective Branch of Barisal Metropolitan Police for torturing a cameraman of DBC in Barisal on 12 March 2018. [12] [13] The police team that attacked the journalist were led by sub-inspector Abul Bashar. [14] [15] According to the US State Department Human Rights Report for 2017 the government of Bangladesh forced DBC news to remove a news item titled “Bangladesh’s Hasina Survives another Attempt on Her Life.” The news was sourced to a Burmese news portal. Abdul Gaffar Choudhury was a Bangladeshi-born British writer, journalist, columnist, political analyst and poet. He wrote the lyrics to "Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano", a widely celebrated song commemorating the Bengali Language Movement. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1967, Ekushey Padak in 1983, and Independence Day Award in 2009.

Television is one of the most popular forms of media and information in Bangladesh. It was one of the first countries in South Asia to introduce television on 25 December 1964, in the then East Pakistan under the state-owned television network Pakistan Television Corporation in its capital, Dhaka. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, the Dhaka television station of PTV was renamed to Bangladesh Television, which had a monopoly on the country's television industry until 1997, with the launch of ATN Bangla on satellite television. BTV World was a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite and cable television channel owned by the state-owned Bangladesh Television. It began operations on 11 April 2004 via the AsiaSat 3 satellite. It simulcast the broadcasts of BTV Dhaka for most of its schedule, which then simulcasted BTV World's broadcasts during the off-air hours of its terrestrial feed.

Abul Harris Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi and politician who served as the Political Secretary of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He was the Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Chowdhury was sentenced to 65 years in total and a life term in prison in absentia for allegedly committing multiple crimes. His party alleges the charges were falsely given, along with those against Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, and many other senior party members.
The 2018 Bangladesh quota reform movement was a students' movement demanding reforms in policies regarding recruitment in the Bangladesh government services. Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad initiated movement initially began in Shahbag and on Dhaka University campus on 17 February 2018, and eventually spread country-wide by 8 April 2018. Nurul Haque Nur, natively known as VP Nur, is a Bangladeshi activist, politician, and currently the 1st President of the Gono Odhikar Parishad political party. He came to prominence in 2018 as a joint-convener of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, which led the Quota Reform Movement 2018. In 2019, he was elected as the vice president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU). He is also the convener of the Chatro, Jubo and Probashi Odhikar Parishad.
Nagorik is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language privately owned satellite and cable television channel owned by Jadoo Media Limited, and is based in Khilkhet, Dhaka. It began operations on 1 March 2018, with the slogan, "Television Noy, Somporko". Nagorik claims that they do not compete with local Bangladeshi television channels, and instead compete with foreign television channels by working with the local ones.
