Mohammed Abood Uraibi (born 26 March 1987), best known as DJ MoCity or simply Mo, is an Iraqi-born DJ, MC and promoter, known for having co-founded Reggae Rajahs, the first Reggae Sound System in India. MoCity also founded The 264 Cru, [1] a Dubai-based music, arts and culture collective, 264 Records, [2] a record label based in Dubai, and most recently boxout.fm, [3] South Asia’s first online community radio.

Career

In early 1990s, Mo moved from Iraq to India, after his father was appointed there as a General Manager for Iraqi Airways. The family settled near South Delhi where Mo attended an Iraqi school. He got acquainted with the Delhi music scene and his first official gigs were held in 2006, where he performed as a MC with a few local hip-hop crews.[ citation needed ]

In early 2007, Mo and a crew from record label AfterShock Records International [4] launched the South Delhi Block Party, a live music property that focused on bringing the main elements of hip-hop (breakdancing, turntablism, graffiti and MC'ing) to a new audience. Later that year, Mo hosted the Soundclash, one of the first reggae events in town featuring Delhi Sultanate & DJ Bellyas. He also organized Drop Beats Not Bombs [5] in early 2008 and curated alternative stages for the Holi Cow Festival in 2009, which he did for the next three editions.

After hosting the first Bob Marley tribute party in February 2009, Mo met Raghav Dang and Zorawar Shukla, who together launched Reggae Rajahs, India's first reggae sound system. [6] [7] Mo and the Rajahs started performing in other major cities across India and internationally at several parties and festivals across Europe. [8]

In 2013, Mo, Dualist Inquiry and Tej Brar launched Dualism Records [9] in Delhi. Mo got involved with Detour Asia [10] projects in Malaysia before he was forced to return to Iraq in 2013 and wait for the war to be over.[ citation needed ]

In 2014, Mo moved to Dubai where he worked for OHM Events [11] and co-founded The 264 Cru. In 2015, Mo helped launch Karak Beats, [12] an event that featured The 264 Cru and international guest artists. The event was recognized by Red Bull Music Academy. [13]

Mo helped launch weekly deep house event Deep Like and monthly event Lofi District, [14] which featured artists like Soulection [15] and Daedelus. [16] [17]

Under his role as a Business Development Manager for OHM Events, Mo curated music for and was a part of the team behind events including Meet D3 and Sole DXB, [18] which saw combined attendances of over 50,000 people. He hosts the bi-weekly “Karak Beats”, [12] a music and art event.

In May 2016, Mo moved back to India and along with longtime collaborator Dualist Inquiry, co-founded Boxout.fm. [19]

In April 2017, Mo, along with Dualist Inquiry, launched Boxout.fm. [19] This is the first online community radio station in South Asia and it aims to highlight India's growing alternative music interest and offers a community-run platform that supports the musical artist and industry. In addition to the online radio station, boxout.fm hosts weekly and monthly residencies in clubs and cultural spaces across the country, as well as publishing its own monthly fanzine called theplug.news. Boxout.fm was nominated in the Best Online Radio Station and Rising Star categories in Mixcloud's Online Radio Awards 2017.

Other ventures

As a social activist, he was a part of the team in India (as a curator) behind the Street Art Forum, [26] which facilitated the interaction between artists and art lovers from across the country.

The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals, founded in 1998 by Red Bull GmbH. The main five-week event is held in a different city each year. The public portion of its program is a festival of concerts, art installations, club nights and lectures by influential figures in contemporary music. The other part of the program is by invitation only, held in a building which has been custom-fitted with a large recording studio, a lecture hall, a radio booth and between eight and twelve bedroom-sized studios. There, 60 up and coming producers, singers, sound artists, DJs and musicians from around the world learn from and collaborate with top industry professionals.

Major Lazer American electronic music group

Major Lazer is an electronic dance music DJ trio, which includes record producer Diplo, and DJs Walshy Fire and Ape Drums. It originates from Kingston, Jamaica and was founded in 2008 by Diplo and Switch, with Switch leaving after three years in 2011. He was then replaced by both Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. In June 2019, Jillionaire left the group and was replaced by Ape Drums. Its music spans numerous genres, mixing reggae with dancehall, reggaeton, soca, house and moombahton.

Moombahton is an electronic dance music genre, derived of house music and reggaeton that was created by American DJ and producer Dave Nada in Washington, D.C., in 2009. Nada coined the name as a portmanteau of "Moombah" and reggaeton.

Saarang

Saarang is the annual social and cultural festival of IIT Madras. It is a 5 day long festival usually in the second week of the year. Founded in 1974, Saarang is the second oldest college festival in India. It was started in the name of 'Mardi Gras' with a small number of quizzes and music events. It adopted the name 'Saarang' and grew with the help of corporate sponsorship, collaboration with large-scale event organizers and international artists.

Reggae Rajahs are a reggae and bass music sound system crew based out of New Delhi, India. They are the first Jamaican style soundsystem in and from India, and they introduced Caribbean slang and vocabulary to audiences all over the country. They received a nomination for the "Best International Band / Group " award at the British Reggae Industry Awards.

RedfestDXB is a music festival organized by Done Events that began in 2013 and takes place annually at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre.

Boxout.fm Radio station in New Delhi, India

Boxout.fm is an online, community radio station based in New Delhi, India. It was founded in April 2017 by Mohammed Abood and indie musician Sahej Bakshi. It broadcasts live from Gulmohar Park in New Delhi seven days a week with programming beginning each morning at 09:00 IST (UTC+05:30) and ending at 01:00 IST. Boxout.fm's shows are then archived for streaming free of charge to a global audience on Mixcloud.

Sole DXB is an annual footwear, music, art, and lifestyle festival that takes place in the Dubai Design District in Dubai, UAE. The festival was inaugurated in 2011, and its most recent iteration took place from December 7 to 9, 2017. Brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebok, and others have exhibited at the festival. Speakers and performers have also included Hiroshi Fujiwara, Pusha T, Mobb Deep, Skepta, Hamdan Al Abri, and numerous others.

Sahej Bakshi, better known by the stage name Dualist Inquiry, is a musician, guitarist, record producer and electronic music composer, who is among a handful of Indian composers working in the EDM genre. In 2017, Bakshi was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list by Forbes India.

Soulection

Soulection is a Los Angeles-based music collective that serves as a platform and community for artists, musicians, and fans from across the world. DJ Joe Kay and artists Guillame '96' Bonte and Andre Power collaborated to establish the brand in 2011. Today, Soulection exists as an Apple Music 1 radio show on Beats1 Radio, an independent music label, festival, world-touring concert and clothing line. The brand defines itself as uniting a "borderless, genre-bending musical movement".
