Dahomey (now Benin) sent three delegations to compete at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany from 26 August to 11 September 1972. This was the country's first appearance at a Summer Olympic Games. The delegation consisted of three people, a sprinter, Ibrahima Idrissou, who did not advance past the first heat, boxers Meriga Salou Seriki and Leopold Agbazo who both did not advance to the second round.

Background

The Beninese National Olympic and Sports Committee, (French: Comité National Olympique et Sportif Béninois), was recognized by the International Olympic Committee on 1 January 1962. [1] Their debut was not until 10 years later at the 1972 Summer Olympics. [2] The 1972 Summer Olympics were held from 26 August to 11 September 1976; a total of 7,134 athletes, representing 121 National Olympic Committees took part in the Games. [3] Beninese delegation to Munich consisted of two boxers, Meriga Salou Seriki, Leopold Agbazo and a sprinter, Ibrahima Idrissou, [4] Nobody was selected as the flag-bearer for the opening ceremony. Athletics

Ibrahima Idrissou was about 32 years old at the time of the Munich Olympics and making his Olympic debut. [5] [6] On 27 August, he took part in the 400 metres competition, where his time was 48.5 seconds in the seventh heat of round 1. [5] [7] Christoph Chodaton was supposed to participate in the men's triple jump, however he did not start. [8]

Boxing

Meriga Salou Seriki was 19 years old at the time of the Munich Olympics and making his Olympic debut. [9] He lost to his opponent, Said Ahmed El-Ashry, who got a total of 299 points. [10] Seriki got 274 points, 25 less than El-Ashry, therefore disqualifying him and meaning he did not advance to round two. [9] [11] [12]

Issake Dabore was a boxer from Niger who mainly fought in the light-welterweight and welterweight weight classes. Dabore competed at three Olympics; Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972. He was the first Nigerien person to compete at the Olympics and the first Nigerien to win an Olympic medal. Dabore won his Olympic medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the men's light-welterweight.

The women's 200 metre breaststroke event, included in the swimming competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics, took place on August 29, at the Olympia Schwimmhalle. In this event, swimmers covered four lengths of the 50-metre (160 ft) Olympic-sized pool employing the breaststroke. It was the eleventh appearance of the event, which first appeared at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. A total of 40 competitors from 23 nations participated in the event, another 2 entries from 2 other countries did not compete.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Swaziland at the 2016 Summer Olympics</span> Sporting event delegation

Swaziland competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. The country's participation in Rio de Janeiro marked its tenth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1972. The delegation included two track and field athletes: Sibusiso Matsenjwa in the men's 200 metres and Phumlile Ndzinisa in the women's 100 metres. Both athletes participated at the Games through wildcard places since they did not meet the required standards to qualify. Neither athletes progressed past their heats, although Matsenjwa set a new national record.

Firmin Abissi is a Beninese boxer who competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. During the 1980 games, he was eliminated in the second round of the men's bantamweight division by Ryszard Czerwiński of Poland. During the 1984 games, Abissi was eliminated in the second round of the men's bantamweight division by Barbar Ali Khan of Pakistan.

Ibrahima Idrissou is a Beninese sprinter. He competed in the men's 400 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

The men's light flyweight event was part of the boxing programme at the 1972 Summer Olympics. The weight class was the lightest contested, and allowed boxers of up to 48 kilograms to compete. The competition was held from 28 August to 10 September 1972. 31 boxers from 31 nations competed.

Meriga Salou Seriki is a Beninese boxer. He competed in the men's light flyweight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics.
