Daniel E. Hauser (born June 18,1942) [1] is an American politician who served in the California State Assembly from 1982 until 1996. After graduating from Humboldt State University,Hauser served two terms on the Arcata City Council from 1974 to 1982. He served as Mayor of Arcata,California from 1978 to 1982. [2]
Hauser represented California's 2nd State Assembly district from 1982 until 1992. The 2nd district included most of the state's North Coast region,including Del Norte,Humboldt and Mendocino counties as well as part of Sonoma County; [2] however,the borders were redrawn after the 1990 census,and it was re-numbered as the 1st District. Hauser's legislative papers are available at the California State Archives. [3] [4]
He chaired the Committee on Housing and Community Development for 9 years,and introduced 306 pieces of legislation later signed into law. [2] Hauser authored Assembly Bill 522 which,after being signed by into law by governor Pete Wilson,became the first American law to attempt to protect white sharks, [5] and the bill which prevented oil drilling along the shore of his district,which was later extended to the entire state. [6]
After the legislature,Hauser was executive director of the North Coast Railroad Authority, [7] General Manager of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad [7] and City Manager of Arcata. [8]

Humboldt Bay is a natural bay and a multi-basin,bar-built coastal lagoon located on the rugged North Coast of California,entirely within Humboldt County,United States. It is the largest protected body of water on the West Coast between San Francisco Bay and Puget Sound,the second-largest enclosed bay in California,and the largest port between San Francisco and Coos Bay,Oregon. The largest city adjoining the bay is Eureka,the regional center and county seat of Humboldt County,followed by the city of Arcata. These primary cities,together with adjoining unincorporated communities and several small towns,comprise a Humboldt Bay Area with a total population of nearly 80,000 people. This comprises nearly 60% of the population of Humboldt County. The bay is home to more than 100 plant species,300 invertebrate species,100 fish species,and 200 bird species. In addition,the bay and its complex system of marshes and grasses support hundreds of thousands of migrating and local shore birds. Commercially,this second-largest estuary in California is the site of the largest oyster production operations on the West Coast,producing more than half of all oysters farmed in California.
California Redwood Coast –Humboldt County Airport,also known as Arcata–Eureka Airport and Arcata Airport,is in Humboldt County,California,United States,8 miles (13 km) north of Arcata and 15 miles (24 km) north of Eureka,in McKinleyville.
The Northwestern Pacific Railroad is a 271-mile (436 km) mainline railroad from the ferry connections in Sausalito north to Eureka with a connection to the national railroad system at Schellville. The railroad has gone through a history of different ownership and operators but has maintained a generic name of reference as The Northwestern Pacific Railroad,despite no longer being officially named that. Currently,only a 62-mile (100 km) stretch of mainline from Larkspur to the Sonoma County Airport in Windsor and east to Schellville on the “south end”is operated by Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART),which operates both commuter and freight trains with plans for future extension north to Cloverdale. The “north end”from Willits to Eureka is currently out of service,but saved by 2018 legislation to be converted into the Great Redwood Trail.
The Arcata and Mad River Railroad,founded in 1854,was the oldest working railroad in California. It operated on a unique narrow gauge until the 1940s when standard gauge rails were laid. Service ceased in 1983 due to landslides. It is California Historical Landmark #842.
Loleta is a census-designated place in Humboldt County,California. Loleta is located 5.5 miles (9 km) south of Fields Landing,and 15 miles (24 km) south of Eureka at an elevation of 46 feet (14 m). The population was 783 at the 2010 census. Residents live in a central community area and rural outskirts. There are two separate Native American reservations on the rural outskirts of Table Bluff,California.
Fieldbrook is a census-designated place in Humboldt County,California. It is located 7 miles (11 km) north-northeast of Arcata,at an elevation of 203 feet (62 m). The population was 860 following the 2010 census.
Wesley P. Chesbro is an American Democratic politician from California. He was an assemblymember for the 2nd district,encompassing the North Coast. Previously,Chesbro served as the Assembly member from California's 1st district from 2008 until 2012. He has also served as a member of the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
The Humboldt Crabs are a collegiate summer baseball team located in Arcata,California. Playing in every season since they were founded in 1945 by Lou Bonomini,later joined by Ned Barsuglia,the Crabs are the oldest continually-operated summer collegiate baseball team in American baseball. Through the 2019 season the Crabs have a total record of 2557 wins and 803 losses. The Crabs did not play the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of 2024,the Crabs are charter members of the newly-formed Pacific Empire League.
Samoa is a census-designated place in Humboldt County,California. It is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest of Eureka,at an elevation of 23 feet. Samoa is located in the northern peninsula of Humboldt Bay and is the site of the Samoa Cookhouse,one of the last remaining original,lumber-camp style cookhouses. The name Samoa is used interchangeably with the peninsula it occupies. The population was 258 at the 2010 census.
Frank P. Belotti was a Republican California State Assemblyman from 1951 to 1972. Due to redistricting,he represented both the 1st and 2nd Assembly districts over his career. A bridge,two parts of Route 101,and the main hall of the Humboldt County Fairgrounds are named for him.
Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Humboldt Bay is a United States Coast Guard Air Station and Sector,with command and primary assets located at the Arcata-Eureka Airport in McKinleyville,California,16 miles north of Eureka in Humboldt County. The station is the site of the command center for all Coast Guard personnel stationed and assets located on the coasts of Humboldt,Mendocino,and Del Norte Counties. It is one of four air stations in the Eleventh Coast Guard District.
