Danela Arsovska (Macedonian :ДанелаАрсовска) [1] is a Macedonian politician and academic and the mayor of Skopje since 2021. In 2014,she was elected as President of the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce,which is the union of national chambers of commerce,promoting economic cooperation on national and international level based on principles of free trade and fair competition. She was appointed Chair of the Macedonian Union of Employers' Organizations in 2015.
She was born in 1979 in Skopje. [2] Arsovska obtained a bachelor's degree in law in Skopje at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University. She has a master's degree in economics and executive education from the University of Oxford and University of Sheffield.
She holds a range of academic and consulting positions in North Macedonia and internationally and has lectured on development topics at universities and conferences. Arsovska is fluent in Macedonian,English,German and also speaks Bulgarian and Serbian.
In 2014,she became the president of the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce,while in 2015 she became the head of the Macedonian Union of Employers' Organizations. She has served on the panel at the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington,USA,since 2016. In 2017 she was appointed by North Macedonia as a court member at the OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration in Geneva,Switzerland,and is also a court member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague,Netherlands. Arsovska is the Macedonian representative in the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and elected General Council Member in the World Chambers Federation. [2]
In recognition of her work in 2018 the World Business Angels Investment Forum awarded Arsovska as "Best Business Woman Role Model of South East Europe". [3] In 2019 at the 6th Entrepreneurs Summit of Central and Southeast Europe,Arsovska was awarded with the Recognition for her special contribution to the entrepreneurship development. [4] In 2020 Arsovska was awarded with Certificate of Merit by Kunio Mikuriya,Secretary General of the World Customs Organization,as recognition for her contribution to customs development. The recognition was presented by the Director General of the Macedonian Customs Administration. [5]
In the run-up for the local elections in North Macedonia scheduled for 17 and 31 October 2021,Danela Arsovska announced her candidacy as an independent candidate for mayor of Skopje. In a very short time,she collected the number of citizens' signatures required for official candidacy. As an independent candidate,she also received support from the largest opposition party in North Macedonia,VMRO-DPMNE,and its coalition partners from the Albanian political bloc:Alliance for Albanians and Alternativa. During the campaign,the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia party presented documents claiming Bulgarian citizenship to Danela and her husband. Arsovska herself has denied these claims. [8] [9] The prime minister Zoran Zaev expected Arovska to withdraw from the local elections. Per Zaev,her Bulgarian citizenship was a problem:political,ethical,dishonest. [10] At the same time,a reference on the website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior confirmed the authenticity of the data from the identification cards of the couple. [11] [12] On this occasion,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria expressed an official protest,insisting hate speech against Bulgaria is a denial of the European values. [13] Despite the campaign against her,Arsovska was elected as mayor of the city. [14]
In January 2024,she became the leader of the party New Alternative (Macedonian :Новаалтернатива, romanized: Nova alternativa). She announced that the party under her leadership will be based on four postulates –justice,freeing the economy from the constraints of big capital and introducing equal opportunities,fighting against corruption and crime,and full digitization of public administration. The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization –Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity,abbreviated as VMRO-DPMNE,is a conservative and the main centre-right to right-wing political party in North Macedonia.
The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is a social-democratic political party,and the main centre-left party in North Macedonia. The party is pro-European.
Nikola Gruevski is a former Macedonian politician who served as Prime Minister of Macedonia from 2006 until his resignation,which was caused by the 2016 Macedonian protests,and led the VMRO-DPMNE party from 2004 to 2017. He is the longest serving post-independence Macedonian prime minister,serving more than nine years in office.
Andon Lazov Yanev,nicknamed Kyoseto,was a Bulgarian revolutionary and a freedom fighter of the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO). Although he identified as Bulgarian,according to the historiography in North Macedonia,he was an ethnic Macedonian.
Early parliamentary elections were held in the Republic of Macedonia on 5 June 2011,a year earlier than necessary. All 123 parliamentary seats of the Sobranie were due for election,including the 3 seats provided for the first time for representatives of the Macedonian citizens living abroad:1 from Europe,1 from North America,and 1 from Asia and Australia. The decision of the ruling parties,the Christian Democratic VMRO-DPMNE and the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI),to dissolve the Parliament and call for an early election was preceded by protests of the Social Democratic Union (SDSM),the major opposition party,and subsequent boycott of the Parliament by them,and by other smaller opposition parties.
Koce Trajanovski is a Macedonian politician. He is a member of the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE. He served as the Mayor of Skopje from 2009 to 2017. Before he was the mayor of Skopje,he was a Member of Parliament and mayor of the Gazi Baba Municipality. He was born in 1956 in Skopje. He studied at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and graduated in 1980. In 1981,he started work at MTZ –Hepos where he was in charge of the computer management area. After that,he opened his own private computer software firm and closed that firm after 2 years of unsuccessfully managing that business. Following that,he decided that politics are more profitable. In 1998,he was elected MP from the winning party. In 2005 he was elected mayor of Gazi Baba. And in 2009 he was elected for his first mandate as mayor of Skopje. After the 2013 local elections in March he was elected for a second mandate. After the 2017 local elections held in October he was replaced by Petre Šilegov.
Zoran Zaev is a Macedonian economist and politician who served as prime minister of North Macedonia from May 2017 to January 2020,and again from August 2020 to January 2022.
General elections[a] were held in the Republic of Macedonia in April 2014 to elect the President and members of parliament. The first round of the presidential elections were held on 13 April,with incumbent president Gjorge Ivanov finishing first with 53% of the vote. However,as he did not receive the support of 50% of all registered voters,a second round was held on 27 April,alongside parliamentary elections,with Ivanov and the ruling coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE claiming victory as Ivanov was elected president and the VMRO-DPMNE won 61 of the 123 seats in the Assembly.
Oliver Spasovski is a Macedonian politician who is the current Minister of Internal Affairs since 30 August 2020 and previously from November 2015 to May 2016,September to December 2016 and May 2017 to January 2020. He is the general secretary of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM). He served as Prime Minister of North Macedonia from 3 January 2020 to 30 August 2020,following an agreement between the leaders of SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE,Zoran Zaev and Hristijan Mickoski,to hold early parliamentary elections on 12 April 2020,which was rescheduled to 15 July 2020.
In April 2016,protests began in the Republic of Macedonia against the incumbent President Gjorge Ivanov and the government led by the interim Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev from the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party. Referred to by some as the Colorful Revolution,the protests started after the controversial decision by President Gjorge Ivanov to stop the investigation of former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and dozens of politicians who were allegedly involved in a wiretapping scandal. The demonstrations were organized by "Protestiram" and supported by a coalition led by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia and other opposition parties,in addition to the newly formed Levica demanding that the government resign and be replaced by a transitional government and that the parliamentary elections planned for 5 June 2016 be cancelled,on the grounds that the conditions for free and transparent elections were not in place. The government and its supporters,who had organized pro-government rallies,maintained that the elections on June 5 were the only solution to the political crisis,with some observers blaming the opposition for creating a "Ukraine scenario" in Macedonia.
Storming of the Macedonian Parliament,also known as Bloody Thursday occurred on 27 April 2017,when about 200 Macedonian nationalists stormed the Macedonian Parliament in reaction to the election of Talat Xhaferi,an ethnic Albanian,as Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. It was the biggest attack in history on a Macedonian institution.
Hristijan Mickoski is a Macedonian politician and the current Prime Minister of North Macedonia. He is also a university professor and president of VMRO-DPMNE. In 2016,he became the director of Power Plants of Macedonia,and in the period from 2015 to 2017,he was an energy advisor to prime ministers Nikola Gruevski and Emil Dimitriev. As the sole candidate,he was elected leader of VMRO-DPMNE at the party's 16th congress in Valandovo.
Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova is a Macedonian university law professor and jurist currently serving as the 6th President of North Macedonia since May 2024. She was a candidate for the 2019 presidential elections,losing to Stevo Pendarovski in the runoff. She ran again in the 2024 presidential elections and defeated Pendarovski by a landslide in a rematch election. She is North Macedonia's first female president.
The Left is a left-wing nationalist and eurosceptic political party in North Macedonia founded on 14 November 2015. Led by Dimitar Apasiev,a Docent of Law at the Goce Delčev University of Štip,the party is anti-NATO and promotes anti-clericalism,anti-fascism,anti-imperialism,and socialism,sitting on the left wing of the political spectrum. They have a youth wing called Red Youth
Dimitar Kovačevski is a Macedonian politician and economist who served as prime minister of North Macedonia from January 2022 to January 2024.
The 2021 North Macedonia census,officially known as the Census of Population,Households and Dwellings,2021,was the third census held in North Macedonia since independence,and the first since 2002. The census recorded a resident population of 1,836,713,a decrease of 9.2 percent,or 185,834,over the preceding 19 years. The census was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic,which affected its administration. It was also considered controversial by some Macedonian groups;the opposition party The Left openly led a boycott. 132,260 individuals did not participate in the census and are officially labelled as "persons for whom data are taken from administrative sources";no ethnic,language,or religious information is available for these individuals. Nonetheless,the head of the State Statistical Office,Apostol Simovski,stated that the census was successful. The ruling government and the European Commission also welcomed the results.
In early July 2022,protests began in Skopje,North Macedonia. The protests were triggered by Bulgaria–North Macedonia negotiations surrounding the accession of the latter into the European Union.
Presidential elections were held in North Macedonia on 24 April 2024. Incumbent Stevo Pendarovski of the ruling centre-left Social Democrats ran for re-election to a second term.
