New Hanover County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census,the population was 225,702. The county seat is Wilmington. Though the second-smallest county in North Carolina by land area,it is one of the most populous counties,as Wilmington is one of the largest communities in the state. The county was created in 1729 as New Hanover Precinct and gained county status in 1739. New Hanover County is included in the Wilmington,NC Metropolitan Statistical Area,which also includes neighboring Pender and Brunswick counties.

Henry McKinley "Mickey" Michaux Jr. is an American civil rights activist and Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly. He represented the state's thirty-first House district from 1983 to 2019 and previously served from 1973 through 1977. The district included constituents in Durham County. Upon his retirement,Michaux was the longest-serving member of the North Carolina General Assembly. In the 2007-2008 session,Michaux served as senior chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and chairman of the House Select Committee on Street Gang Prevention.
George Milton Holmes was a Republican member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's 92nd House district,including constituents in eastern Surry,northern Iredell and Yadkin counties. Daniel Lindsay Russell Jr. was an American politician who served as the 49th governor of North Carolina,from 1897 to 1901. An attorney and judge,he had also been elected as state representative and to the United States Congress,serving from 1879 to 1881. Although he fought with the Confederacy during the Civil War,Russell and his father were both Unionists. After the war,Russell joined the Republican Party in North Carolina,which was an unusual affiliation for one of the planter class. In the postwar period he served as a state judge,as well as in the state and national legislatures.
