Lee Patrick Brown is an American politician,criminologist and businessman;in 1997 he was the first African-American to be elected mayor of Houston,Texas. He was re-elected twice to serve the maximum of three terms from 1998 to 2004.
The Institute of Criminology is the criminological research institute within the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge. The institute is one of the oldest criminological research institutes in Europe,and has exerted a strong influence on the development of criminology. Its multidisciplinary teaching and research staff are recruited from the disciplines of law,psychiatry,psychology,and sociology. It is located on the Sidgwick Site in the west of Cambridge,England. The Institute of Criminology building was designed by Allies and Morrison. The institute is also home to the Radzinowicz Library,which houses the most comprehensive criminology collection in the United Kingdom. The institute has approximately 50 PhD students,30-40 M.Phil. students,and 200 M.St students. The institute also offers courses to Cambridge undergraduates,particularly in law,but also in human social and political sciences and in psychology and behavioural sciences.

The St. Louis County Police Department (SLCPD) is the primary and largest law enforcement agency serving St. Louis County in the U.S. state of Missouri. The current Chief of Police is Colonel Kenneth Gregory. According to the Charter of St. Louis County,the county police chief has all of the criminal law enforcement duties of the sheriff of St. Louis County,except for the operation of the St. Louis County Jail,which is handled by the St. Louis County Department of Justice Services (civilian),court bailiff and service of civil process. Clarence O'Neal Bradford,known as C.O. "Clarence" Bradford,is a Houston City Council member,a former chief of police of Houston,Texas,and in 2008 an unsuccessful Democratic Party candidate for District Attorney of Harris County,Texas. On November 3,2009,Bradford was elected to the Houston City Council from At-large Position 4 and took office January 2,2010. In the 2011 election,Bradford won a second term as a Houston City Councilmember.

According to the publisher,the rankings are based upon statistics submitted by cities to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which are then published by the FBI online,as part of the Bureau's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. Recently,the ranking has been criticized by several organizations,including The American Society of Criminology (ASC),Criminal Justice Journalists,and The United States Conference of Mayors as well as the FBI.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is a state-wide investigative law enforcement agency within the state of Florida. The department formally coordinates eight boards,councils,and commissions. FDLE's duties,responsibilities,and procedures are mandated through Chapter 943,Florida Statutes,and Chapter 11,Florida Administrative Code. FDLE is headed by a commissioner who reports to the Florida Cabinet,which is composed of the governor,the attorney general,the chief financial officer,and the commissioner of agriculture. Murphy's "long-range impact on American policing nationally probably will be judged by students of police history as significant as that of August Vollmer or J. Edgar Hoover," the FBI's Law Enforcement Bulletin commented in a 1986 cover story on the Police Foundation.
William B. Evans is currently serving as the executive director of public safety and chief of police of Boston College. Previously,Evans was the commissioner of the Boston Police Department from January 2014 until August 2018. Evans served as interim commissioner from November 2013 until he was permanently appointed by newly elected mayor Marty Walsh. He announced his retirement from the Boston Police Department in July 2018. He currently serves as the chief of the Boston College police department. A graduate of Suffolk University,Evans holds a master's degree in cybersecurity from Boston College and another master's in criminal justice from Anna Maria College. He is also a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy,FBI's National Executive Institute,Department of Homeland Security Post Naval Executive Leaders Program and received several certificates from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in subjects ranging from homeland security to preparedness leadership. He is active in several professional organizations,including the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Major Cities Chiefs Association,and is currently an adjunct professor at Boston College and Boston University.
Nigel Clive Hadgkiss is a British-born Australian police officer and public servant,who was the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner until resigning on 13 September 2017. He was previously an Assistant Commissioner with the Australian Federal Police and was the Director of Operations at the Wood Royal Commission into the New South Wales Police Force.
The Ferguson effect is an increase in violent crime rates in a community caused by reduced proactive policing due to the community's distrust and hostility towards police. The Ferguson effect was first proposed after police saw an increase in violence following the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson,Missouri. The term was coined by Doyle Sam Dotson III,the chief of the St. Louis police,to account for an increased murder rate in some U.S. cities following the Ferguson unrest. Whether the Ferguson effect really exists is subject of discussions with many published studies reporting contradicting findings concerning whether there is a change in crime rates,number of 911 calls,homicides,and proactive policing. Furthermore,the effect and influence of the portrayal of police brutality in the media is also contested.
